  • Peoria Lock and Dam is one of five sites on the Illinois Waterway receiving much needed repairs and maintenance as part of the Rock Island District's 2020 Consolidated Lock Closure Project. The locks and dams on the Illinois Waterway are critical pieces of infrastructure that help drive our Nation’s economy by enabling the transport of commodities in the most safe and efficient mode available - river navigation. This video offers an inside look at the work taking place inside the dewatered lock this summer. For more information about the closures visit: www.mvr.usace.army.mil/Missio...

Might apply for lock and dam operator trainee in PA. Is the salary negotiable? What is the pay range like? I have 4 years military and 10 years state. Thanks for any information

What is the point of one tainter gate?

The single 84-foot Tainter gate at Peoria Lock and Dam is only a portion of the 570-foot dam used to maintain the 9-foot navigation channel on the Illinois Waterway. The other 432 feet is made up of 108 wicket gates which can be folded down into the river, when water levels permit, to allow for "open pass" navigation around the lock. The Tainter gate is used to control the river's flow when the wickets are raised and allows the Corps to maintain the 9-foot channel when water levels drop.

But how much of the river flow are you adjusting with it, because with a couple feet couldn't the wickets just be decided to be raised or lowered?
