- In this episode of Kitty Talks Dogs we welcome Rio The Cairn Terrier, together with his sister he came to let us groom his coat.
The goal of this session is maintaining the coat between shows, and this is the first time Rio is being stripped by someone besides his owner.
The right way to maintain the coat between shows is to strip every week a little, leading up to the show.
Because Rio can’t be with us every week, we will do as much as possible in one session.
Besides the stripping, we are going to use a serum, and you will be able to see how and why we use the “texture it powder”.

I've checked out any Cairn grooming videos I could find and this is clearly the best.
Thank you so much for your nice comment . Very very appreciated. Thank you
So informative and helpful for an amateur like myself. Being able to see your technique in action and hear you describe it was wonderful. Rio was such a good boy and he is so handsome .
the best grooming video ever!!
Thank you so much !!! very nice to hear ! Greetings

Thank you Marianne, !!! Lovely to hear! Kind regards, Kitty
I love the content of this video which is perfect for me.😀👍👍
Oh please let me come and work for you for free. What an amazing teacher you are!!
Fabulous video … I’m going to feel so much more confident trying to strip my year old Cairn.
Oh Thank you Debra. Very lovely to hear . THank you .
Eres muy buena en tu trabajo ❤
Thank you so much. We recently purchased an 8mth old male and he has never been stripped on his body, head only. From what I am understanding from your video is he will have really short hair for several months as there are only 2 layers now I see as you described. Oh boy.. his hair is super thick this will be a job. Really appreciate your video and tool recommendation. Thanks.
Thank you homer. For your wonderful feedback, so nice to hear . Please don't hesitate to contact us if we can help you further , thank you

❤
Thank you !!
Kitty I enjoyed your informative demonstration. We have a 6yo female cairn who has never been hand stripped; we have not allowed clipper in only scissoring. We have kept her coat long with a skirt bc her coat is beautiful colors of silver.
My question is can we successfully pluck her coat beginning now? She’s just got too much hair and it looks bulky. Our intentions were good but we should have groomed her naturally.
can you tell me about that table thanks, the swivel one - its awesome. GREAT VIDEO thanks so much
hi , Thank you for your message . you can find all the information on the link below : transgroom.com/en/blogs/Kitty-Talks-Dogs-Grooming-Rio-the-Cairn-Terrier

What a wonderful video - many thanks! I just adopted a Cairn puppy, who is now 14 weeks old. I've been brushing him and gently pulling on long hairs to get him accustomed to the feeling. What age to you recommend for starting hand stripping?
Tolles Video , welche Pflegeprodukte haben sie benutzt, Creme , Spray und wo kann man sie kaufen .
Loved watching Kitty Talks Dogs, “How to Groom A Cairn Terrier.” I have a rescue Cairn terrier and her hair has about a years growth! Is the grooming process the same for such long growth? Thank you!!
Thank you Michele for your comment, really nice to see and read that you enjoyed our grooming video with Rio . This session is the same for longer coat . however if we may advice , i recommend to handstrip you dog every 2 months Maximum . The coat will be in a better shape / health , and it will be better for your dog , cause now with 1 year length it's a huge job for the groomer and your Dog . Please let us know if we can help you further, Kind regards, and once again thank you for watching .
He looks as though you are pulling out the hair but he is not happy due to having his head tied as well, my lady supports the skin where she pulls so he can not feel it being pulled out, my dog sit and let’s her do it . My dog has won at shows so needs to be right
Great video. How do you keep their eyes cleaned? It’s scary trying to get the gunk out of their eyes
Hello Michele, thank you for your question . please take a look at the link below for eye care . we are happy to help you further .

I cannot find that pointy small stripping tool you use for the ears and neck on Amazon. Do you know where to find it? I find really long ones but not to a point like what you use.
I loved the video and it’s helping me a lot. Although my dog is Yorkie mix he has wire coat and has cairn in him and I see it a lot. I messed up by cutting…then I stripped to try and fix it did too much on the back… now he’s in his “pajamas” as you say, so it can regrow. I want to do it right going forward but realize I’ll need the right tools to help. He’s just a pet but I want him to look really good and feel good too.
Hello , Thank you for your feedback and we are happy to guid you to the correct tool :

Is the Cairn Terrier high maintenance grooming wise for a first time dog owner? How would you compare it to other types of dogs? I'm thinking about adopting one.
Thanks for the video!
hello , thank you so much for your message and question. a cairn needs to be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks , the have the coat in a good condition. Comparing to other wire coats it's actually the same . Some people leave the groomingsession in between longer (10 to 12 weeks), but be aware you will have some hairs then in your house . It's all depending from owner to owner .
@@TransgroomTV Thank you for the answer.

do you not use the scissors anywhere on the head or face? Is it entirely handstripped there?
Hello , Rgcooke , thank you for your message . Thankful for that . Yes, The Head is totally handstripped . we don't use scissors on the head & face ; Yu can handstrip with your fingers, than we recommend the Grippy fingers. or you can Use a detail stripper to use for specific & detail work . Please see the links below for what we recommend:

I live in Brazil and over here no one knows how to hand strip. My Cairns have been clipped once and had their coat groomed with scissors several times the past 10 years. Their coat is thin and dull. It there anything I can do to correct the coat now or is it too late? 😕
hello , with a dog who is 10 years old . it will be a challenge . depending from dog to dog. sometimes the coat is still hard enough to handstrip . as long if you don't hurt the dog and he like it . i would give it a try
Hello,
I have enjoyed your detailed explanation on strip grooming... If I may, I would like to ask, at what age is it advisable to start stripping a dog...?
I thank you in advance for your answer .
Hello Peter, Thank you so much for your question. We advice to start stripping at a young age . Just the dog can learn to stand on the table, to be stripped , not a long time, at first 10 minutes, and you build up the time . How longer you wait to handstrip your dogs coat , how more difficult it becomes for the dog, because he don't know or experienced Before . my advice .... Please let me know if we can help you further . Kind regards , Kitty
A cairn is supposed to be a "natural" dog, not plucked or stripped, just "tidied".
A cairn, as an earth dog needs hair in ear to keep dirt out.
This dog has a soft coat, that is why you have to work so hard to get the coat right.
Hello Diane, Thank you so much for your feedback. This channel , this video, is for helping & guiding Groomers around the World, how to handstrip a Cairn. there are always different points of view, from groomers , breeders, show dogs. So I understand your concerns, but as we both know, not every dog and coat structure is the same. Groomers need to groom every type of coats. Thank you for your feedback Highly appreciated. Kind regards,
Hi there, awesome video! Very informative. I am getting a cairn puppy soon, he will be 10 weeks old. When is it ok to start stripping? Thanks!
Hello, thank you so much for your feedback . We recommend to start as soon as possible . so the puppy knows whats it's all about , and it's a pleasant experience for you and your dog . Kind regards, Kitty
Fix your problems in the whelping box, not the grooming table.
My Cairn is 5 months old and when I pull on his hairs, none come out. Also, when watching other Cairn stripping videos, they pull out a load of undercoat with a grooming rake, I didn't see you do any of that. Why? Also, you can't buy either one of the stripping tools you used in America. Nobody sells any kind of solid stripper or stripping stick. Why?
I just put in an order for stripping stone sticks on Amazon and considering their stripping knives once I become familiar with the process. Amazon does have some Show Tech products as well. I noticed your comment was a year ago so perhaps you have found comparable products or Show Tech products already. I have asked if Show Tech sells online or in the US as well.😊
@@deborahcke I gave up on the idea of stripping. My questions were never answered. I wound up buying a Mars Coat King Rake Stripper Tool that I use about once a month or two, he hates it so much. Mainly just to gibe him some relief from the 100 degree temps.
Can you please groom an old English sheepdog
Hello Godfred, the Old english sheepdog is on our list . so please keep on following us and our RUclips channel . Thank you for watching . Kind regards.
what is the actual purpose of plucking the dogs ear hairs, that seems unusual. Even in humans plucking nose/ear hairs is not really advised.
Hi , thank you so much for your message ; i understand your question completely : Hair in the ear should not always be regarded as a negative thing. It protects the ear from unwanted guests, but too much hair can lead to a severe ear infection. When the ear canal is full of hair, there is no longer sufficient oxygen and air circulation. This can cause excessive earwax production and consequently infections as well. Please check our Blog about ears :

Kind regards,
😢 I've never heard of such a thing as plucking !! That's terrible !! Omg why do it that way ?! It's gotta be painful !!
Hello Jeannie , thank you for your feedback . we understand you opinion about handstrippng a wire coat . however , this is absolutely no painful . the hairs have to be handstripped, this is a professional technique and is not terrible . If you want to learn more about handstripping and the techniques, please check the link below with all information .
