Can you use discharge on white just to get that softness?

With non high-solids water based inks you should get the softness already! Why not give it a go as you already know the colour won't shift that much.

discharge seems cool but colors lose brightness after one or two washes...

That can be a challenge but loading the inks up with enough pigment and curing them for as long as possible helped ours wash better
