  • Averie’s transition from patient to nurse is a special story to tell. When Averie was 8 years old, she began experiencing severe headaches that she assumed were just migraines. After many trips to the doctor and years of pain, Averie’s family brought her to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where she was diagnosed with Moyamoya disease-a rare progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain.
Several years later, Dr. Chern, Chief of Neurosurgery at Children’s, performed two successful brain surgeries on Averie. During her recovery, she grew extremely close to her care team, especially her nurse, Jennifer Wheelus. It was during this time that Averie realized what she wanted to do with her future: she wanted to give back to Children’s as a way of saying thank you for saving her life. Averie asked Jennifer how she should go about that, and Jennifer replied, “become a nurse.”
Averie went on to pursue a degree in nursing and after graduating, she began working on the neurology floor at our Scottish Rite hospital-the very same place where she spent so much time as a patient years earlier.
