- Let’s make a soft spine junk journal out of a vintage book cover.
This is a design team project for The Digital Collage Club and I’m using 2 different paper sets: Jane Austen Days Journal kit and what goes really well with that are the beautiful backgrounds from the William Morris kit (please see links and discounts below).
Journal Measurements:
Height 18 cm/7.2 inches
Width 13 cm/5.2 inches
Spine 4 cm/1.5 inches
3 signatures/14 pages each = 42 pages total

Jane Austen & William Morris would be so intrigued by this project. So beautiful, still elegant, yet with an element of rebellion & the unexpected, just like both of their works. It’s so sad she died so young & never realised how famous & acclaimed she would one day become. Hopefully she’s been reincarnated multiple times since then & her spirit has been able to feel a sense of pride in how she has affected millions of people. Or perhaps Jane, the Brontë sisters, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Harriet Beecher Stone, Margaret Oliphant, Helen & Harriet Scott (two Australian sisters who eventually managed to get recognition for their amazing documentation of butterflies & contribution to botany in the 1800’s) & many other incredible writers, poets & artists of their generations gather regularly to marvel over how their creations have become widely accepted & admired & how freely women can write, paint & do almost anything these days.
Love your thinking, yes!
I thank you for this contribution. Women have strived and managed to get ahead despite the obstacles. Never assume though that we can not go backwards, I see signs of that and there are still those, men and women, who feel we have come too, far as ludicrous as that may seem.
I always learn something useful when I watch you.
Don't be nervous! Punch a paper that isn't your project first to make sure it is what you want!
This is such a lovely project! Thanks for sharing! Hugs! Peggy
This one was more like the Barbara I’ve watched for many moons. You do such awesome things with paper and fabric. So pretty…❤
Awww, this is so adorable! The exclusive binding also adds to the superb elegant vintage look! Watching this whilst I had my third coffee. So upbeat! Thank you!
Dear Barbara, Journals with soft spines are my new craze. They are wonderfully attractive and make life so much easier. Thank you for sharing your ideas. The papers you have used are simply gorgeous.
Have a beautiful day,
Barbara 🇦🇺
Thanks! I think I’m hooked as well! 😃❤️
I have been a Jane Austen fan since I was a very young girl. This book would be unique and beautiful with any theme but it is so special to me with Jane. I just love it.
So happy you like it! ❤️☺️
Hi Barbara. Every time I think ive seen the best of you, you come up with something brand new and beautiful. You inspire me SO much! Thanks for all your hard work and talent. 🌼💞
Thanks so much 😊
When thread is too short like that, it’s helpful to keep a small crochet hook close. So then you can just grab the hook, hook the thread and pull it through, and done.
That's a great idea! Thanks! 😃❤️👍🏻
@@49dragonflies❤
I love the entire project. It’s so colourful and still sophisticated. The binding method is very different and yet so perfect for this journal. Amazing make Barbara! 🤗🇨🇦🤗
Well done, Barbara! Journals/Art does tell you what it wants to be. I fight it sometimes, but then it feels right when I listen.
So beautiful! You are a wonderful artist. So enjoy watching your channel!
Be patient and listen to what your project needs. Barbara from Vienna, Austria. Collection of quotes. This project’s cover needed a name on a scrap of fabric. I love the project and the whole production of the video lesson. Thanks so much as always.
I think this is my favorite of all the journals you have made. The combination of William Morris papers, the fabrics, stenciled pages, and threads are absolutely wonderful. You are so talented and this journal shows another of your creative styles.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Wow! You are so patient! I felt your pain when the thread was too short. Also, loved how you challenged yourself with the Cinch machine. This journal is stunningly beautiful! Thanks for sharing. ❤
What an adorable project. The sound of paper during the flip through was everything…… :)
Oh Barbara, you did it again. 🥰 A wonderful and unique journal. And I absolutely love the binding!!!! ❤
This turned out beautifully Barbara. I love how the colors along with the images In combination with the William Morris papers work so well together. I also so much enjoy when you do flip-throughs and we can hear that yummy sound of all the paper. 😊
Oh, Barbara, I love this journal so much! The beautiful pages, the patchwork inner cover, and that beautifully crafted spine are all PERFECT!! Thank you for sharing this process with me. ❤❤❤
Perfect! And I love all the little details you've already added to it. Really neat way to do the spine. I've not seen this before.
A gorgeous journal sweetie, I love the style and the colors ❤ that binding method of the spine is something I'd like to try myself too. Sending a big hug 😊
Stunning! Love the colors. And the spine is spectacular! Don’t think I could ever cover the holes, it gives it so much character. Thanks for this wonderful inspiration! So beautiful! 🤗❤️
What a beautiful journal! I always learn something new (for me) from you, Barbara! Thank you!
Oh my gosh!! I was a nervous wreck when you were punching the holes in your cover! But the end technique was amazing. Flipping through your Journal, it was so beautiful when you’d get to a vellum like page and it showed your stencil page behind it. So cool! Love these two paper kits. They work together perfectly. ♥️♥️♥️
WOW! What an excellent way to make a journal....you explained it beautifully and did it wonderfully too...😻
Thank you Barbara, this was a really great video. I appreciate when artists leave in their bloopers because I think we really learn from them. Very pretty journal. 40:50
Lovely journal! Another option for a soft spine is to use Heat and Bond fusing material and press the fabric with a hot iron. Heat and Bond will fuse fabric, trims, paper, chipboard, and vintage book covers.
Thanks for the tip! ❤️
I love this! Jane is my favorite author and I downloaded this kit from the DCC but hadn't done anything with them yet. Love the William Morris papers with it and this binding method is brilliant! Thank you for bringing it to our attention!🐼
Oh Barbara! That journal is absolutely gorgeous!!!❣️❣️
Another beautiful journal ! I love watching your videos, and I love to hear you laugh x
Absolutely stunning! Gorgeous papers/colors, beautiful work!
Maybe my favorite video of yours yet!!! Just beautiful, Barbara!!!!
Love this journal Barbara. The binding is super cool and the pages are beautiful!❤
This journal is so pretty and totally my style! The stitched spine is a great idea, but I see it takes time! Thank you for the canvas idea! My husband will like this idea, too! He makes original books, while I do journals. I like the patchwork fabric on canvas, and I am excited about sewing around the pieces like a quilt! This journal seems super sturdy, which is a real bonus! Thank you Barbara, I look forward to your videos everytime! And, you never fail to inspire!😁👏
Thank you so much! ❤️
Wow sweetie 😍 I love this journal !!! Everything I love, coffee paper, fabrics, Jane Austin and William Morris, everything goes so well together, so pretty 😍😍
And the biding spine ... I definitely need to try, thank you for sharing. You're the best 👏💪😁 love ❤❤❤
So sweet! Had to share with my daughter, a Jane Austen lover, she said your colors are beautiful! I was greatly interested in the soft spine, so thank you so much for the great tutorial. The whole video was done so well, so
thanks for sharing your talent with us… and remember, what so ever you sew, that you will also rip! 😜 good lessons, well done!
Thanks so much! ❤️
Love how this one turned out! Definitely one of the best kind of spine bindings!! LOVE IT!!!
This was a lovely themed book and thank you for the soft binding tutorial and link. Your patchwork idea was great, too. It really enhanced the theme.
This type of spine is one of my favourites to make! Your journal turned out beautiful. I love the collaged inside covers. 💕
Love it :) Thanks for showing Barbara! Always a pleasure to watch! Have a nice day and hugs from Lower Austria, Sonja
Dear Barbara, this journal is one of my favorites! I like the papers, the colours, your stenciling and the fabrics. The way you arranged it. And all the little details you put on the pages! The binding is beautiful as well, but not for me! Puh! Not in this life! 😅 Chapeau! 🎩Rita 😘😘
Those pages from the digital are beautiful. Loved how the inside patchwork came out. Beautiful cover. Thanks for sharing with us!
Barbara, love this cover technique! It turned out beautifully! Love the cover decoration and all the gorgeous pages! Love it! TFS!❤
beautiful beautiful beautiful - i love this Barbara - and the papers are gorgeous - ok i'm going to hit replay now lol - thank you and be well xx
This journal is beautiful. I love the binding, it makes a nice look! I love the stenciling on the blank white pages it really makes those pages pop. The William Morris papers and Jane Austin themed papers are perfect. Love the whole journal. I agree with the fact that these journals do speak to us...sounds kinda weird but they do seem to tell us what they need don't they. I'm so glad you mentioned that because I was wondering if I was just being weird. ha
Haha thanks! Not weird at all! 😊❤️
I absolutely love this journal. I adore the color choices you've made, the book cover you choose, the new spine technique, the William Morris papers, the stenciled backs of the digitals (they go so well with everything else), the authentic papers and ephemera you've add, and the fabric swatches hear and there. I wish this journal were mine! I'm so glad you've included all the links below so that I can try to recreate one like this for myself. Of course, I do not have any of the stencils that you have, but I'm hoping I can find some that will be close to the "right type" to go with the William Morris digitals. These colors and patterns are so inviting to me today. I am at home today because I was sick, and this video was a nice distraction to how I feel. Thank you for always inspiring me to try new things.
Thanks so much! I hope you feel better soon and have fun making your journal! ❤️
Beautiful and such a great tutorial with your process being real!
Absolutely love this journal Barbara! Such a creative spine too! Can't wait to see all the fun things you do with it! Thanks, as always.
This is beautiful Barbara. I love the mixture of papers and binding method. It will be such fun to decorate too.
Beautiful journal! But that doesn't surprise me! TFS 🤗
Way to go Barbara. What a beautiful this journal is 💕
Love that soft spine. Great colors and imagery too! Excellent!
Barbara, thank you so much, beautiful journal. I feel your pain with the cinch every time I use it but, it's a wonderful tool. So many great tips! your are fantastic . Hugs
Barbara: beautiful work. Placement colors, design and papers. Absolutely love it! Carol from California
As sad as I was to see Claudia disappear, Jane turned out beautiful.
So adorable, love this soft spine sewn onto the covers!
So happy to see you took my suggestion of using Melanie’s fabric spine method.
Yes! ThNk you again! I’m in love! ❤️
Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for doing these RUclips tutorials.
I love how this turned out! I haven’t seen this binding method before and I can’t wait to try it. You make it look easy!!
What a beautiful journal. I really liked the soft spine💕
I Absolutely LOVE this!!! I downloaded the WM papers a few months ago and I've been using them often, they beautiful- I have been watching you videos for a few years now and for some reason just haven't got around to signing up to the Digital Collage Club but this is going to be my mothers day gift this year :)
I really love those two kits too and so happy to see this lovely journal you made with them!
Das ist ein schönes Journal geworden! 👍 Eine interessante Art des Rückens, kannte ich auch noch nicht. Finde ich gut und werde ich sicher auch mal probieren 😊.
Liebe Grüße Nicole
Barbara - what a beautiful book. So full of inspiration!
I love the William Morris Patchwork Barbara. Thanks for the good ideas.
Love how this turned out!! Going to give this type of spine a try!
Oh how beautiful, I really love the William Morris paper patchwork you did! Thank you.
Barbara, you did an awesome job. Very beautiful. Blessings and Hugs 🤗
Love the soft spine and technique for attaching the covers. Thanks for another great video!
Your color theme is lovely. Very soothing.
Love how this turned out, love the papers and that spine is brilliant... thank you so much for sharing.. .
I wouldn't have thought of this method worth a try.
Just beautiful! To keep your needle from snagging as you sew, pass it under the other threads eye first. You do risk pricking your fingers, but it stops the snags. Perhaps you risk falling asleep for a hundred years using this technique 😄
Haha thanks Kathy! 😃❤️
Brilliant 👍 if you didn't have such a good eye for Color this wouldn't work with so many of them. Well done 🙂
Amazing amount of work on this, it's beautiful 🎉
Gorgeous book! Love the way you made this into your style!
I coffee dye a stack of paper in advance then I feed them in my printer and print whatever images I want. I love the vintage style.
The journal is beautiful. I am giving thought to a Cinch!
Nice tutorial. I love the soft spine. When working with a very short tail when sewing, try using a small crochet hook or leading with the threaded eye end of the needle instead of the point. The whole needle will not go through but the thread will when making the knot.💜🐞
Thank you! ❤️
The journal is lovely and the soft spine is wonderful. I’m trying one. Thank you for the inspiration. 💖
Oh my! A wonderful journal!
This is so awesome! The soft spine looks intimidating but possible. Thanks for sharing your struggles.
❤️❤️ Love this spine idea… thank you for sharing ❤️❤️
That’s beautiful! Love the papers and ladies. Thanks so much for sharing your process. Saving this for future reference. 💙✨🌿
lol ve the digital collage club. It so worth joining. Love these digitals a bunch, Barbara.
Hello sweet Barbara, how elegant is this journal 😍 love love love
Thank you sweetie! I hope you are well! ❤️
@49dragonflies everything is good. Thank you, sweetheart 🫶🏻
Wow! I've got to find another word to describe how I feel about these video's ... hahaha! I did a search on your RUclips site for "flat journals" ... I couldn't recall what you had said. This is the first video that came up ... soft spines ... that's the answer. Well, I have a journal all ready to sew the signatures into ... not a soft spine. But I'll know for next time. Thank you for the inspiration - as always!!! Suki in Seattle
Beautiful, and so inspiring. I love your tutorials - Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful. Great ideas! Thank you!
What an amazing way to bind a book. I don't have a sensor but I don't think it matters because I'm not sure I have the patience to do that kind of binding. But having said that I think it is beautiful
Lovely themed journal. I have difficulty knowing how to "work" in a themed journal as I don't write in them. I look forward to seeing how you work in this as opposed to a more ecclectic junk journal.
This journal is so beautiful. Just one of my favorites that you made. The soft spine I wonderful.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Barbara, this journal is so beautiful! It’s a triumph of hard work, planning and patience! Congratulations! Are you going to keep it for yourself? I hope so. I would LOVE to see you work in it, please! The patchwork was perfect and something I’d never seen done before. Thank you so much for the tutorial!
Thanks so much! Not sure yet if I will work in this. I have so many others I’m working in…
Loved the cover! Those papers and the spine print are beautiful! And the soft cover is really useful in a journal! Thank you ❤
What an awesome way to put the cover together!!!!
Great tutorial with a very nice result !Merci.
This is beautiful, Barbara. I love it. 😊
Bellissimo! Love the stencil idea. Thanks for sharing. 😍
Absolutely gorgeous 😍 I love your tutorials, thank you for sharing!!
I love William Morris art❤
