Because of that difference these celebrations may seem a bit strange to some. In this video we will have a look at some of the bizarre Christmas traditions around the world.

This was great, thanks Rhetty! Merry Christmas!
You're welcome James and thank you for watching! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Thanks Rhetty. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Cheers.
Thank you for watching Ron and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
After watching this I no longer think my families tradition of playing Christmas Bingo for gifts as crazy. 🤣👍You and your family have a nice Christmas!
Hi Jodie! 👋😁🇦🇺
Hi Paul 👋😁🇺🇸🎄
Did you do the Bingo because it was a big family? I could see doing that because it can get expensive trying to get everyone a gift. Thank you for watching and sharing your family's tradition. I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
Thanks Rhetty for showing us the traditions of other countries. I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas.
Thank you for watching and Merry Christmas to you Janedee!
I've been jamming to the Beach Boys Christmas since November. That's my personal Christmas tradition, as I'm a BIG Beach Boys fan :D
I love that! Yes Beach Boys are awesome🎄🎶
Oh very nice Brett! They really do have some fun music. Thank you for watching and sharing what you have been listening to.
Oh my, I might need to add that to an electric Xmas playlist esp given where I love! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Oh my gosh, the poop log. 🤣That's too much.
It really is quite funny! Thank you for watching tobesocourtney!
If a group of toddlers founded a country and established their own traditions that would be one of them
I think I’m going to start doing the Finland tradition. My husband’s mother passed away when he was 7, and ever since, no one really does anything for his mother’s grave. Not even us, which is sad, because we live the closest to the cemetery. I informed my husband about the Finland tradition, and he liked it. So, this Christmas Eve we will start. So, thank you for sharing these fun (and some strange) Christmas traditions from around the world☺️, and Merry Christmas to you too 🎅!
I do like that tradition and I think that is great that you both have decided to start doing that. A little battery operated tea light would be simple and there is no danger of it starting a fire. Plus, rain wind or snow will not extinguish it. Thank you for watching and Merry Christmas!
@ I too was thinking of a tea light. Great minds think alike☺️!
Take a handful of miniature tootsie rolls unwrapped and lay them behind the beating log...
🤣🤣🤣
That would be funny! Thank you for watching Wil_Liam1!
Merry Christmas, Rhetty and everyone!!!!!🎄
Merry Christmas to you as well.🎄😊
Merry Christmas to you Pamalas1002 and thank you for watching!
Merry Christmas! ❤🎄
Thank You for the consistent uploads this year Rhetty!👍🏻🇺🇲
You're welcome and thank you for watching ZMAN_420! And thank you for the super thanks as well!
This was brilliant!!!!
I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this one aariley2!
We have a fairly common tradition in our family where we always open one present on Christmas Eve and the rest in the morning. Also, for years we have had our own personal tradition of giving a box or bag of food as one of the Christmas gifts. We fill it with foods the recipient likes, as well as weird and unusual stuff they would never have thought of! It is always everyone's favorite gift!
I think that is a wonderful tradition and it is very thoughtful. Thank you for watching whispermorbury7985!
Merry Christmas to you and your family🎄🎅🏻🤶🏻Thank you for ALL you do🙏🏻ROCK ON!!!!!!!🤘🏻🤙🏻✌🏻
You're welcome MrMegaFredZeppelin and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
Merry Christmas, Rhetty
Thank you my friend and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
@RhettyforHistory I will my Brother in Law always makes sure I do as well as my brother and sisters. They send me a video of their Grandchildren opening gifts
Lots of fun (and sometimes odd) traditions! Thanks for researching these! Merry Christmas Rhetty! 🎄
You're welcome and Merry Christmas! Thank you for watching Bonnie!
When I lived in Norway there were a lot of traditions, we didn't do the broom hiding though lol We did take a sheave of grain and tie it to a tree for the birds, the more birds that visit the better the luck in the new year!
You also left out a bowl of rice pudding for the Nisse! If you didn't then they would play tricks on you and your family!
Another tradition was hiding an almond in the rice pudding we have for dessert on Christmas eve. Whomever finds the almond gets a marzipan pig and a bit of indigestion because we were all rather full from the turkey dinner! lol
Thank you for watching and telling us some more traditions from Norway. It's always interesting to learn about some other ways to celebrate!
I love the Icelandic Yule Cat. Cats rule, and Krampus drools!
Haha! Thank you for watching Katzenjammerz67!
This was interesting. I bet you had fun putting this one together. I've heard about the Ukranian one with the spider web. I think that's a sweet story.🕸 And what's with Spain's fascination with pooping.💩😂
I don't have any Christmas traditions, but I do keep my grandfather's tradition of eating creamed pickled herring for good luck on New Years. I buy a jar every year for luck.😊
I'm not sure what the fascination is with poop either but it is sort of funny. I haven't seen a tradition on New Years of eating creamed pickled herring. Thank you for watching Shannon!
I have a tradition where I do not hang any glass or breakable ornaments on my tree. I typically decorate it with candy canes and gingerbread people and various mostly wooden ornaments. This began because, when I moved out of my parents' house and put my own first Christmas tree, we also had a kitten. And she had the time of her life with that Christmas tree, let me tell you! 🙃
LOL! I can relate to having a rambunctious kitten! My Maine Coon cat, Charlotte, loved to climb up in our Christmas tree when she was a kitten. Charlotte is 12 years old now, and too big to climb our Christmas tree, but sometimes, she'll knock one of the ornaments off one of the bottom branches and bat it around like it's a cat toy. It's amazing how cats never quite grow out of kittenish behavior, even when they reach old age!
We had that tradition growing up. Legend has it that I stuck a glass ornament in my mouth when I was a baby and tried to eat it. It shattered so my mama got rid of them. We were allowed glass ones once we grew up, lol.
Ahh yes. Cats are like terrorists on trees. It's so funny how they all seem to do that. Thank you for watching and sharing how you decorate at Christmas time.
@@Tim_the_Enchanter All cat owners should follow this tradition
Loved this!!! Thank you my friend.😊☃️🎄☃️
You're welcome and I appreciate you watching Leesa!
Very neat, thanks Rhetty.
Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and yours.
Thank you for watching and Merry Christmas to you as well KD!
Thank you for sharing Rhett ! Merry Christmas to you and the family. 🎄
Thank you for watching my friend and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
Good Morning Rhett 🙋🏽. Happy Holidays to you and your Family ❤.⛄🎄☃️🧑🏽🎄❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️🎄☃️🎄🧑🏽🎄.
Hello Carole! Thank you for watching and wishing you and your family a happy holiday season as well!
Thanks for sharing these interesting traditions! The poopers though! What the...?!😆
It is a strange one! Someone somewhere probably has a whole museum worth of figures. Thank you for watching!
Interesting traditions😊 I know some, thanks for sharing 🎄🎅
You're welcome Monika and thank you for watching!
Such beautiful images! Thank you for making my Christmas season more festive❤
You're welcome and I'm happy to hear you enjoyed this video. Thank you for watching kh0034!
What a coincidence, I was just reading a magazine and a few of these traditions were mentioned in it. 🌲 My only tradition as a kid was watching all the Christmas shows, especially my favourite Frosty ☃️ The Snowman. I looked forward to that every Christmas.
I doubt kids today would care. Merry Christmas 🎄🎅 Rhett. ❤Jodie 🇦🇺 Hi Paul 👋😁🇺🇸
@@swansfan6944 👍😁🇦🇺🎄
I'm not so sure shows are quite as special because they do not have to be in front of the TV at a certain time to see it. They can watch it any time they want. That sort of takes off some of the luster and allure. Thats my take on it anyways. Thank you for watching Jodie and Merry Christmas!
@ well that’s true. I don’t think they show those actual Christmas shows anymore anyway. So glad I purchased them on dvd years ago, and yes at 55 I still watch them. 😁
Merry Christmas 🎄 I hope you and Sarah are doing well.
Build a Beach Man!
Merry Christmas to all from Iona Florida.
Peace is free!
Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you!
Merry Christmas fellow Floridian!
Brother & I slowly toned down Christmas traditions over. The challenges where noticeable in the 2010s when dad's health went south.....especially his dementia.
After his death in 3017, we mostly catered to mom. Brother took it upon himself to keep mom fat & happy during holiday meals.
It was a source of personal pride to keep her eating like a pig.
When she died in 2022, we stopped with the last of our traditions.
Since we're single with no kids, there was no point continuing with traditions. Most of the relatives we knew are gone. The rest are spread out from coast to coast.
We miss the huge meals with family. But, this is simply a part of reality. As long as we have pleasant memories, we're still winners.
My mama passed in Dec 2021. I used to put up a little Christmas tree in my room but I haven't done it since. I still haven't put up the big tree yet. It gets kinda hard to get into the spirit of Christmas. 😔
I'm sorry to hear about some of the recent losses in your family. I have went thru this the last couple years. Thank you for watching and sharing how it has been with you and family traditions.
@RhettyforHistory honestly, the losses were expected. It won't take the pain away, but it helps with the grieving process.
That was fun! I had heard of some of these traditions but learned of many more. Just shows you are never too old to learn and this one was a lot of fun Merry Christmas, Rhett, to you and your family!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you had a Merry Christmas Leslie!
Our family tradition is on Christmas Eve we always went to my aunt & uncle's house to pray the Rosary. Afterwards everyone would sing while my Dad & uncle played the guitar & accordion. Then we would form a line & carry a candle as we kissed a statue of the Baby Jesus and grab a piece of candy. It was always hard candy or ribbon candy. Afterwards we had tamales and my Mama's delicious chocolate. She put cinnamon in it and it was SOOO good! The closest I've been able to find is the Abuelita hot chocolate. Thank God my sister learned how to make it! 😋
Those sounds like some great memories that you and your family have made. Thank you for watching and sharing some of the traditions that you all have.
Rhett, I really enjoyed your video about Christmas traditions all over the world. My Christmas tradition was my late mother would give me a small Christmas present to open on Christmas Eve and the main larger presents on Christmas Day. 🎄 Happy Holidays to you and your family and have a joyous New Year 2025. Take care 🐎
We did a celebration very similar to yours. Usually our early gift was some sort of clothing item we could wear on Christmas Eve for service or Christmas Day. Thank you for watching and sharing a tradition you have. I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
My family did this growing up too. I may carry it over to my kids!
One tradition that we do every year without fail is to draw a name from an elf or Santa hat at the beginning of December. The person that took that name is to either make a small homemade gift, like a craft, or Christmas card for the person whose name is on the slip of paper. Writing and or reciting a short poem is another option. We give these heartfelt gifts
*in addition* to their regular gifts.
That sounds like a wonderful tradition to have stanford. I think we should all do something like that because it will mean more. Thank you for watching and sharing your tradition.
Wow. This was quite informative. Thanks.
You're welcome and thank you for watching Joe!
Some are odd, but some like the radish decorations are cool. I hope your family and you have a Merry Christmas. 😊🎄
Some of those radish displays are unbelievable. Thank you for watching and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well Melisa
I like the Finnish one! A candle by loved ones graves! 🪦🕯️🙏🏻
I started doing the Finnish custom of putting a candle on my deceased parents graves several years ago after learning of the custom on youtube! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
It really is a beautiful idea. Thank you for watching!
My dad has been gone for 30 yrs. And he used to play this song Christmas just ain't Christmas by the ojays around ny birthday dec 17th and every year as a lil kid i would find a way to destroy the 45...but every year he had it ready for me to enjoy....and i play it with friends or family or just by myself....
Thank you for watching and sharing your tradition that you had with your father.
Here are a couple other Japan Christmas facts: families traditionally eat a Christmas cake (women who weren't married by 25 used to be referred to as Christmas cake because no wants them after the 25th) and it's usually considered a holiday for couples.
That is interesting. A lot of women get married after that age in the U.S. That's about the time when many women get settled in their job after college. Thank you for watching and telling us about that tradition. I had no idea.
A "bizarre" Christmas tradition (at least to me) gaining traction in recent years is to FULLY decorate for Christmas WAY in advance. 🤔 When I was young, I had some friends whose families would decorate the day after Thanksgiving. I thought they were a little strange, but nowadays, more and more families are decorating the day after Halloween! 😂🤔😂.
I love Christmas lights... A LOT, but that's way too early, IMO.
It does seem to be getting earlier and earlier each year. I'm not sure why some want to celebrate for two months. Thank you for watching!
😳Thank you for a highly illuminating video. Merry Christmas😊🎁🎄❗️ P.S. Highly Illuminating❕
You're welcome and I hope you have a Merry Christmas as well!
As a young kid I'd go with my parents and others from our Lutheran church and go caroling! Visiting several homes. It was an amazing way to get in the spirit of the holiday. I have to say tho... the KFC tradition is one I could get behind 😄Many of these I was totally unaware of.
I haven't seen a group of carolers in years. I see them in towns or festivals at Christmas but never the door to door kind anymore. I miss that. Thank you for watching and sharing what you used to do.
Driving or walking around looking at Christmas lights & decorations🎄🎅 When I was a young girl we always read The Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve🎀🎁
Those both sound like great Christmas traditions. I still enjoy driving around looking at lights. Thank you for watching Brenda!
I'M HIDING THE JELLO FROM MY HUSBAND !!!And with that said MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY 2025 TO ALL. CHEERS FROM CANADA .
Merry Christmas to you and thank you for watching Fay!
😂💛 Merry Christmas as well from FL, USA!

Neat stuff! Good job, Sir!
Thank you and I appreciate you watching Andy!
Thank you Rhetty for History for this truly fascinating video.
You're welcome and thank you for watching Mikey!
Merry Christmas to all. We just hang Stockings and have a small fake tree. Me and my brother are over 40 and parents are over 65. We keep it simple.
Merry Christmas! 💚🎄
I appreciate you taking the time to share your traditions.
We recently discovered that our family has strong Welsh ancestry, so I can see the Mari Lywd in our future.
Oh very nice! I'm sure it wouldn't freak many people out that aren't familiar with it but when you see it then it looks really festive and fun. Thank you for watching!
In grade school I met a boy Karl who was from Germany near the Austrian border. I heard all the Krampus stories.
I wonder if he missed all that culture when he came here?
@RhettyforHistory He did they had a German Christmas, then they came over for an American Christmas celebration. I miss the German one and Krampus Night
Pooping & KFC for Christmas! What a way to celebrate! LOL! Thanks Rhetty, interesting how they celebrate in different parts of the world! Merry Christmas to you & your family!
Yes it is. Not many of these ways ever really make it to the U.S. Thank you for watching and I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas!
Thanks Rhetty for another interesting video 10:43
You're welcome and thank you for watching Anita! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Great 😊
Thank you for watching Mike!
I have a Christmas Eve dinner every year with my friends. Also on Christmas Day we traditionally eat Farine pie(its a Bermudian dish) and ham for breakfast as we sit around the tree. We then say what each of us are thankful for, say a prayer then open the gifts as Christmas music is playing and a Christmas movie is on mute in the background. I make pound cakes for my dad every year( lol he lucky i love him).
Those sound like you have lovely Christmas traditions and the food sounds amazing! Thank you for watching and sharing how you celebrate.
There is only one Holiday tradition that matters, and it’s A Festivus For Therestofus (but only as long as there’s an aluminum pole involved) 🎄🤜💥🤛🎄
Is that the one from Seinfeld? Thank you for watching!
@@RhettyforHistory Yep, you bet. 😄 The one where Frank Costanza celebrates Festivus with an aluminum pole, because he finds tinsel distracting.
Merry Christmas Rhetty!
Thank you for watching and Merry Christmas to you too Matt!
I love the Finnish custom of lighting candles in cemeteries
It really is a nice tradition that I would love to see here in America. Thank you for watching!
Merry Christmas my friend.....they're 100 degrees in Australia...I'd love to see a white Christmas...we celebrate it the same as you & England...take care, see you in 2025....thanks for the great info, Regards, Simon 😊
Thank you for watching and I hope you have a great Christmas! I can't imagine it being 100 degrees at Christmas. It's interesting to learn how it is everywhere.
Very interesting!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you watching meedwards5!
I remember leaving shoes by the door some years when I growing, but I have no idea where it came from. In school, he had "advent friends" where we would secretly give gifts during advent, revealing who the friend was at the end of advent. I also know about Krampus, and there is a long history behind it. There are some funny Krampus gifts on the Archie McPhee website. A more recent tradition is surfing Santa in Hawaii, where Santa surfs onto the beach in Waikiki. I remember a year or two where the kids broke a candy pig, but I don't remember what that was all about. Same with the pickle ornament.
I have seen that surfing santa and I think that is pretty cool! They definitely need to have something like that there. I know there are quite a few people that celebrate the Pickle and Krampus here in America. Thank you for watching Greg!
I wouldn't to be walking around Czechia when the shoes fly. 👠
It could be dangerous! Thank you for watching Lynn!
Merry Christmas to you as well.
Thank you and I appreciate you watching darkwolfnight8293!
Never heard more of them before. I think the creepiest is the horse skull in Wales! The only one of them, we kind of have in my country, is the one with leaving shoes/boots and find gifts inside the next morning, although I think we adjusted to it from abroad, and in fact it's not about shoes but socks hanging in the fireplace or a wall. Still, not even half of the population keeps up with this tradition nowadays...
Thank you for watching and sharing how it is where you are Michael.
In China, Santa is often depicted playing the saxophone and people often exchange and eat apples on Christmas.
Very interesting and I had no idea about that. Thank you for watching and telling us.
I want a drone for Christmas now😂!
Haha! Are you near NJ? Thank you for watching!
We don't really have many Xmas traditions ourselves, but we have been trying new things each year that we could make a tradition. For my brothers and I growing up we always did Xmas with my grandparents since they were right next door. Other than that it was mostly the normal visiting like we always did but with presents added in. :)
That would have been nice to have your grandparents next door. Thank you for watching and telling us about how you did Christmas. There are definitely a lot of interesting traditions out there.
Bring on those Yule Lads!!!
That really sounds like a fun tradition!
If the Ukraine one is true, you will NEVER see me there round Christmas. Hate spiders, even fake ones.
A Dutch tradition (Netherlands for those who don't know) is on 2nd Christmas Day (yes, we have two). A lot of people go visit furniture malls. Not sure if they buy much or just go there to spend a day out of the home. Same happens with 2nd Easter Day.
Oh that is interesting. I'm curious about the sales now that you mentioned that. Thank you for watching and telling us about that tradition.
I never understood the Japanese tradition with KFC for Christmas. The closest I can relate; one year in the 70’s when my aunt&uncle & cousins used to come over for Christmas Eve (or vice versa) we got White Castle for dinner. Although the idea was wildly popular with us kids, not so much with the adults and we only did it the one year.
Sometimes things happen and places like that are nice to have. I wonder if something went on that year and if that is why your family did that. As far as KFC in Japan. I think it's commercialization at it's finest. It all went over there at just the right time and for them it was all different and fun. Thank you for watching!
My grandparents had a Christmas tree made of aluminum that we would put up every year on my grandmother's birthday, the tree was made back in the 50s
Did that tree have a color wheel? I've always loved those and I'm surprised those haven't made a comeback. Thank you for watching Bill!
@@RhettyforHistory color coded branches to color coded holes on the tree stem, love your show
Christmas in itself is a bizarre tradition. 🙄
then just ignore it. don't pay any attention to it whatsoever.
It is NOT BIZARRE! It’s a celebration of Jesus’s birthday YOU HEATHEN!
Everything is always bizarre to someone. Thank you for watching!
Merry Christmas 😊
Merry Christmas to you as well RabittsGal!
Definitely going to throw pudding!
Sounds sort of fun! I don't know about in my house though. Thank you for watching freeheartnow!
The Christmas pickle.

I've always thought that is a fun tradition. Thank you for watching!

I’ve been to Japan. They don’t mess around when it comes to KFC. They love that stuff!
It's great that they have something to get excited over. Thank you for watching and sharing your experience there.

My tradition is to listen to Roger Whitaker's The Governor's Dream. It's called the Butt Dream Song in our house. Go listen to it. You will see what I mean.
Thank you for watching and sharing how you celebrate Christmas!
The Christmas Tree itself is from pagan ritual. It is not from Christianity.
