  • The north-east has suffered decades of industrial decline and a devastating cost of living crisis, which men say is having a detrimental impact on their mental health.

Video producers Maeve Shearlaw and Christopher Cherry follow Earl John Charlton, who is using his experience of homelessness and drug addiction to get other men to open up. From walk and talks to open mic nights, amid the reality of working in a declining industry, he tells men in his community that it’s OK not to be OK.

The fact that at the time of writing this comment there are 0 dislikes show that there are a lot of people out there who are ready to hear the struggles of men in our society. If you are a man and reading this, never be afraid to open up. I'm feeling like a much more stronger, capable man for having done it, especially in front of those closest to me (other men and women alike).

This is brilliantly done. I am proud of Earl, despite having never met him. Like him, I use my lived experience of severe mental illness to help and support others overcome their mental health issues. I am lucky to do it for my job.
I really feel for Earl and his community. They feel abandoned by our government and this is shameful. As the interviewees articulated, this financial crisis is having a detrimental effect on many people's mental health.
The way that Earl was stigmatised for being an addict is horrifying.
Drug and alcohol addicts still face a lot of stigma. We need to continue public education on addiction and treat it as a Psychosocial issue.
Earl is very brave for sharing his story. He's been through so much trauma, I've no doubt he will help many people and hopefully his actions will result in change.
We stand with you North and South Shields!

How sad to see how far North Shields Fish Quay has declined. When I was younger my grandad would take me to the Quay and it was heaving with folk bidding and boats tethered and all the surrounding industry, the ice works, the kipper smoking chimneys and the smells. What a sad sign of the times...keep up the good work lads.

There absolutely need to be more tech and work from home jobs in the North East, and in the north in general. And more training opportunities, schemes. This won't fix everything, but I still see many jobs advertised that could be done fully remotely but they are in London, having to go to the office at least several times per week. With a completely overheated housing market, having to rent a room. Many jobs could be done fully remotely on a "London salary" while living in the North East. It would improve so much. Newcastle and the North East are trying to become a big UK hub for technology at the moment.

2- Alot of people dont want to work atall and are forced into the deadend job.
