It grew to become my favorite Alien movie. despite its faws.. It's deeper, has themes on grief, faith, sense of community, redemption... In comparison Aliens is a very shallow action blockbuster. Aliens is a fun movie, but sadly people hated Alien3 simply because they wanted another Aliens, instead of appreciating the movie for itself. also, it went back to what Alien is supposed to be: horror

@@MrShakespearefan not completely... but it is very shallow in comparison. Ripley has her mother-figure moment but that's it. It's all archetype characters, very correct action movie, entertaining.. but it's really just that: the blockbuster Alien movie

@@MarioLanzas. it’s not “just” that. An action blockbuster has just as much value as an art house film. It shouldn’t be dismissed. It’s excellently crafted, perfectly structured as has a great lead performance. I think Alien 3 underrated but I still enjoy Aliens more. The original is still the best I think. Yes Alien 3 is more artistic but what I like about the series is that there is contrast. Alien 3 is fascinating in how it contrasts with Aliens. I don’t think of movies as deep or shallow. I love Aliens and Alien 3 both for what they’re doing.

The assembly cut is brilliant. Its a bold movie that has aged very well. But it has to be the assembly cut. It fleshed out the inmate characters so that have definable personalities. Which is much needed as they all look similar.

Maybe I got xenomorph goggles on but I was a teenager when it came out. I had all the Kenner alien toys that followed its release. I loved it then and it's still one of my favorite films. The color palette, casting, acting, set design, score.... The plot had a few holes but eh, not a deal breaker. The Assembly cut is my current fav version but I like the theatrical just fine.

    I will always defend it.
Yeah, it's a bit of a mess. Its production was LEGENDARILY insane, and it was pulled in so many different directions. That anything coherent came out of it is something of a miracle and testament to Fincher's skill.
As for the audience...the public wanted Aliens 2 with guns and marines and the happy hollywood ending.
I was delighted when that whole thing was ripped away, delighted at the bleak tone, the gorgeous cinematography and the beautiful, mournful score.
The endless moaning about Hicks and Newt are from people who just don't get the bleak. They want their happy hollywood thing to continue. I rubbed my hands together when it didn't.

    • @harrysanders818
      @harrysanders818 5 месяцев назад

You said it way more compact than I did :D Amen to that! Can't stand the moaning about Newt and Hicks. It is a testament to how most Hollywood goers are just in it for the soap to warm their hearts, not the picture. Alien Universe is inherently dark, depressing and bleak as a piece of art, all the way back to being based on Gigers work, also being a reflection of these aspects of life itself, which made it successful in the first place. Only after Cameron introduced the 'american hero military' aspect (which a lot of people didn't get, as it was not really meant that way) people wanted GI-Joe Alien³ Family and bash on A³ not playing by those numbers. Aliens introduced a lot more people to the fan base that would prolly usually prefer True Lies or Die Hard above any real Alien movie, who where just in it for the guns and explosions. I suspect if Aliens never would have had the military aspect (which I am not against, I think it was great) those cross section of fans would not have hurt the media reception of A³.

Alien 3 will always be better than the gender essentialism of Aliens.
Alien broke stereotypes and Aliens attempted to embrace them. This is why Aliens theatrical is better than the special edition.

“Alien 3 is not an adrenaline-spiker like Alien or Aliens. Because Alien 3 is just not a creature feature - it’s a film about death.
Not only that, it’s a film about confronting and accepting death, and what can be achieved when that happens. For me, the result is nothing less than the kind of exercise in existentialism novelist Albert Camus might have made if he’d gone into horror flicks.”

Cameron killed the franchise by making it a ridiculous shoot em up.
    People don't understand the movie.
Alien was a phenomenal film, Aliens was a silly shoot em up with shallow characters, Alien 3 was flawed but better and I would have killed off Ripley at the start also, Ripley was great in the first film but for realism it would have been better to see other actors in the sequels.
Newt etc were bland rubbish Holywood junk characters.
The alien is horrifying it should be a well written and directed film not a Call Of Duty game.

I love both cuts of Alien 3. But the Assembly Cut is far superior than the theatrical cut. It fixes a lot of the pacing issues & also reintroduces a lot missing scenes….oh & it rectified the problem with the toxic waste disposal that’s seen / mentioned but never used.
Alien 3 is something of a flawed masterpiece & I think after the upbeat ending of Aliens with Ripley, Hicks & Newt being almost a family people found the dystopian vibe of Alien 3 hard to get their heads round. Hicks & Newt needed to die, to continue to keep Ripley isolated. Throughout the films Ripley lost everything; the crew of the Nostromo, her daughter, the marines.
From the moment the Fox fanfare starts to end & distort, it helps set the tone for the film. This isn’t a pleasant film & I think Fincher did incredible even though the studio fucked his vision up so so badly. Not to mention his DP; the legendary Jordan Cronenweth had to leave the shoot due to his advancing Parkinson’s.
The cast in Alien 3 is absolutely incredible; Brian Glover (Andrews) played some awesome roles in his time. Then throw Ralph Brown, Charles S Dutton & Charles Dance into the mix & it’s just excellent.
Fun Fact: I went to art college not far from where they filmed the EEV impact & Ripley washing up on the beach; Blast Beach in Seaham, North East England. Also parts of the blast furnaces that are on the Tees Estuary feature in the matte paintings; although they filmed some scenes at Blyth Power Station.
It’s worth noting that the same area of the Tees Estuary was the influence for the opening sequence of Blade Runner. Ridley Scott attended the same college I previously mentioned. Due to him growing up in the area, he took a lot of inspiration from the blast furnaces & oil refineries that dotted the landscape.
During filming Tom Woodruff from Amalgamated Dynamics spent up to thirteen hours inside the creature suit for certain scenes.

I was 12 when this came out and it totally blew my mind. I've wasted a lot of time and fun being stubbornly contrarian, but now that's passed I'm still in ❤ with this film.
The atmosphere is so gross, dark, glum and hopeless. I love the funeral scene, and the way Ripley takes the helm with a bunch of convicts, who aren't all 2 dimensional.

@@Stillenacht3D Fair enough. The killing off of Newt & Hicks I wouldn't consider bold so much as insulting to the audience, rendering her entire struggle and previous 2 triumphs (which made her the ultimate Final Girl of all time, neck and neck only with Sarah Conner) completely meaningless. The previous 2 Scores, I would argue are much better, and in much better films. They even used the Aliens Score in the trailer for Alien³! And again, not so much a bitter sweet anything, so much as an embittering story and embittering ending to one of the single greatest and most beloved film characters in cinematic history! They f'd up! There are 4 characters in Alien³. Ripley, Bishop II, Xenodog/XenoOx, and amalgamated bald guy. Part 4 may be worse, but I'd also argue that that doesn't effect a rating for a previous installment. Alien³ doesn't render Aliens lesser, nor does Terminator 3 render Judgement Day lesser.
I'd even go so far as to say there are lines of dialog in Aliens that are singularly better than the entirely of Alien³. "Bay 12, please!" Is better than Alien³! 😂 Imo. But if ya like it, ya like it! 🤷‍♂️ no hate, but do you really like Alien³? Or do you just really want to like Alien³?
