@@lukewulf No. He was pretending to be a journalist and accused a well meaning amd innocent man of a crime. Tyler made false accusations for RUclips clicks.
The Whittakers need special care and a family accountant. Giving money or buying them a house doesn't solve the problem, even when the heart's in the right place.
@@Gurupimp10the problem is they’re mismanaging their money, and they’re mentally unwell and probably won’t get it if they sat down and explained to them about money management, what they need is a caretaker to help them sort their life and an accountant to help manage their spending and savings
Whittakers take an L on lying by omission. Mark takes an L for not disclosing what exactly the donations were funding. Tyler take an L for bad faith journalistic practices. Me (myself) takes a W by having a cool video to watch on my lunch break.
betty is the most mentally there one in the family, the rest of them dont know at all whats going on really so how can you blame the whole family? and even then betty is litterally inbred too so being the person who is not inbred (presumably) you wouldnt take her lying personally?
tyler didnt report in bad faith, he genuinely believed that mark wasnt giving money to the whittakers. it would only be in bad faith if tyler knew what was going on but deliberately reported misleadingly. its also unlikely mark can hold up his exclusive contract to the whittakers as they do not possess the cognitive capacity to comprehend what the contract entails. doctrine of non est factum, look it up

Someone, somewhere is winning. That money isnt vanishing into the ether. Unless it is in bank notes stuffed into a mattress. Be interesting to follow that money!
I grew up around families like the Whittakers. They 100% knew what they were doing when talking to Tyler trying to get money out of him. Tyler just walked into the trap that is the Whittakers. And now Tyler will be their caretaker. Give them any money, and they now see you as a guaranteed free bank for them to do whatever they want.
Idiot Tyler has already stated on the GoFundMe that it's only up until a certain date. He ruined the Whittaker's relationship with Mark and is going to dip out as soon as the dust has settled on this situation. Tyler is no Mark-- he would default to be the active caretaker
I mean there are a lot of examples like of people like that but Mark and Tyler knew that those are geriatric people with mental and learning disabilities that have problems understanding cause and effect, value of money and taking cares of basic needs. People see that well when making or watching sensational videos (even in good faith) but forget it as soon as its somehow tied to them "why are they need so much money every two weeks" or " why they didnt defend me"
Most of them can hardly communicate, how does anyone expect them to manage money and remember everything they’ve spent and know the best things to buy at what moment? Also I bet there are a lot of people who see them and immediately exploit them. ‘Oh you’re gonna need all of this for your house’ or ‘it’s gonna take all of this to fix your car…’ Even scatterbrained people will sometimes get parts for one project and parts for another and soon nothing is complete but theyre stuck because they didn’t plan it out properly.
Even the monkeys can learn to do that. It's not about IQ. Even the dogs, idk, crocodiles probably. You get one system, you see it's working for you. You lose it, you look for another. It's survival, it's not love, it's not clever, it's not bad or good, it's a behavior that is learned. I know other people like that and they learned if you don't do something money you don't take. And they work! And they go out and look for job when they don't have one!!! Basic jobs, very honorable and often difficult!!!
1000% correct. Everybody knows that, INCLUDING hack "journalist" Tyler. Just looking at the thumbnails on his channel tells you everything you need to know about who and what he is.
I donated to the 1st GoFundMe & I had just found out from these videos that Mark has been giving them 10s of 1000s of dollars every 2 weeks. I donated for the house, not for them to blow it all n whatever they bought because they still have nothing to show for it. I wished Mark kept the house money in 1 pot & not spent it. Obviously these ppl aren’t good with money. The way Mark was doing it ensured that they would never get a house. 🤦🏻♂️

I’m from West Virginia and know a lot about the Whittakers, most people here do. Odd is only about 25 minutes from me. Growing up, my classmates would talk about them as if they were an urban legend and a lot of people would drive by their home out of curiosity. They’d say that one of them was chained up outside like a dog and would “bark” at you (in reality, the man couldn’t speak properly and if you’ve seen any videos of the Whittaker family, you’ll know who I’m talking about since he can kinda resemble the sound of barking). Teenagers would CONSTANTLY drive past their house and be disrespectful towards them for no reason and yell insults/antagonize them intentionally, so eventually the Whittakers would chase away and throw rocks at anyone who drives past their home due to the constant harassment and mocking. I always thought it was so rude and cruel when people did that. It’s quite sad. Honestly most small towns here do look exactly like this. A lot of poor people, drug addicts, unemployed coal miners, which is really unfortunate because West Virginia has so much beauty in nature here.
I was born in WV and live here now. I really get frustrated with how WV is portrayed in media. I feel like ppl think we are all like the Whittakers, and your story, despite making me angry and sad, proves that the majority of WV residents are nothing like the Whittakers. But we almost always get media coverage over things like the Whittakers, so I guess it’s understandable people think we are all like that. Much ❤ to you
Been in WV from birth til 25 years old. It’s full of scumbags that’s can’t wait to take the opportunity to trash or bash someone. I couldn’t help but feel sad for the kids In wv it’s almost like they have nothing better to do but condemn anyone that’s not “normal” because it takes their mind off of how trash wv and their lives are. It’s a shithole place and I’m glad I finally left. When my wife got pregnant I vowed to not allow my child to be born there and to make sure my son got a better education than me because I actually had to teach myself AFTER I got my education from wv. Idk if it’s the teachers or the students or both but man it’s so much stupidity there. Get out asap. I used to think wv was one of the best places on earth as a small child then I realized how horribly wrong I was before I graduated elementary…
Well I live in Alabama and feel the same way, bc anytime anyone mentions Alabama they just think of incest as well lol... But Alabama actually has a lot to offer... If only it could be a bit less conservative and more inclusive to everyone

There’s a gas station near my workplace, where i have been approached numerous times by folks asking for cash for gas. I tell them every time that I have no cash but if they want to pull their vehicle up I’ll let them fill up on my credit card. Not once has that happened. Imagine that..
Absolutely genius from Mark. He was probably getting tired of being asked for money all the time from the family anyway. Now he has a reason to stop running the Go Fund Me and put that responsibility on Tyler to keep his one going or be the person responsible for wrecking the original Go Fund Me!
Yeah Its an opportunity for him to cut himself off and good for him honestly but I think that everybody forgets that he made series of videos about a really inbreed family of geriatrics with severe mental and learning disabilities and then took no responsibility to deal with it accordingly. I belive he wanted good but he didnt prepare and then seemingly didint do anything to change that instead hes kinda throwing them under the bus for things he should know as well as "not defending him", like I get that he may feel shitty and thats ok but maybe they didnt get that he was being attacked in the first place? Tyler asked them about the house and not where the money went, then maybe they woukd have better opportunity to say like "new roof, walls, trailer, he gave it to us"
I don't understand the last part, what do you mean Tyler wrecked the original go fund me and now has to be responsible for it? Mark self admits that the family is bad at managing the money and cause of it the money goes nowhere other than being wasted and such. And yes Tyler did blow the video out of proportion cause from what it seems at least from my understanding he didn't communicate with mark and instead just immediately started blowing up news about a possible fraud. We most likely never know the full truth if no discovery phrase happens but that doesn't matter. Yes what Tyler did was insensitive but he isn't responsible for anybody live and for giving those strangers money. Saying he is, is no different from going to news RUclipsrs talking about nijisanji contracts and about how they drove an employee of theirs to committing suicide two times and possible did the same thing to other employees of theirs, which cause of that information cause people and companies to distance from nijisanji leading to loss of 30% stocks and also some pure bred idiots go out of their ways to bully and send death threats to other employees of nijisanji. And with all that you say "hmm yes cause news RUclipsrs covered that topic, those RUclipsrs are in fact responsible for the bullying and also for nijisanji 30% stock drop. No they aren't, same goes for Tyler just cause you decided to talk about something and spread that information as long as they don't fabricate any false evidence it's completely fine and whatever happens with it isn't their fault.

They've likely never had money and no ones taught them. They're used to not having the money so when they get it theres a scarcity mindset and they gotta use it before they lose it. They probably do have a lot of "small" expenses due to probably only being able to buy a lot of cheaper things. Like a cheaply made oven vs an expensive and well and oven thats going to last much longer.
Well they are literally mentally & physically disabled, and the only people around them able to articulate are drug addicts, so no surprises there mate
The lack of transparency was clearly a big mistake, but I think the biggest mistake was definitely just giving them the money whenever they asked. They're dirt poor and clearly don't know how to budget or manage the money.. sad but true.

Quite honestly the Whittakers should NOT be given a new house. Within 2 weeks it would look exactly like the house they are in right now. These people would benefit way way more from a financial planner/advisor that had 100% control over their money. They would piss away any money they've been given, like they have already. what did you expect from a inbred, zero education family who is most likely addicted and spending all this money on drugs and/or getting scammed out of it by other people? 2/3rds of poor people are poor for a reason and will never get out of poverty due to their own doing no matter how many resources you give them. Just look at the ppl that are lifers on the welfare system....
This I get. I have a cousin that is homeless and he's just got addicted to drugs during the lockdowns, he stopped working and rather be homeless than stop doing drugs. His family tried to help him but it was on the condition of getting help. He even refuses food if you give it to him cause he wants money for more drugs.
Wow. How about some compassion, empathy, and understanding for what these people are dealing with? The Whittaker’s are inbred. They do not function properly, mentally. Which, has been made quite obviously. For you to expect them to function like healthy adults is beyond the pale. To take manipulative behavior personally and feel betrayed, from such type of folks - well, it’s pointless; and shows how self-centered your ego is. One cannot expect them to make any decent, cognitive decisions. That’s a failure on those who have helped them. Hell, that’s why they live the way they live, in the first place. That doesn’t mean they won’t make decent choices, at times - though, One cannot expect them to be reasonable, without it backfiring, at some point. If anything, it speaks poorly on Mark’s part - not understanding the true nature of those he has been helping. I am not stating he shouldn’t feel slighted or hurt, though, to be so upset about it and, essentially, retaliate- well.. I can see where, perhaps, he can see it’s a waste of time and efforts, though, again - to be emotionally offended, by severely mentally incapacitated people making poor personal and relationship decisions, shows an utter lack of emotional intelligence, on Mark’s part. My friend goes through this, with her aunt - who is very developmentally delayed, and narcissistic. Though, she understands the reality - and still shows up, for her; and when my friend is feeling hurt, she reminds herself the reality her aunt is dealing with. My friend was taking care of her aunt, and it was very hard on her, emotionally. She never felt appreciated and her aunt never appreciate all that she had done, for her. Her aunt only expected more and more. Though, now her aunt lives in an adult facility where everything is managed, for her aunt - and it is working out so much better, for the both of them; and my friend doesn’t have those emotions weighing on her, nearly as much as she use to. The fact that you called these people “disgusting” shows how low and heartless of a person you are. You have my condolences. Best wishes.
They have the minds of kids tho they can be swayed easily.. all the questions were very specific and journalistic to contribute to an agenda. One the Whitakers would never comprehend
I don't know how Mark or the people viewing these videos aren't realizing that if the Whitaker's are going through thousands of dollars every couple weeks and her answer is "I need it!" And there's nothing to show for all of that money then clearly it is all going to that massive casino in the area. It is so clear to me that is it.

Far from thousands of dollars a month, maybe a few hundred a month. Social security can pay between 49.00 a month for 1 person to up to 350.00 a month for 1 person. Maybe Larry, might get a couple hundred, but NOT Timmy, Ray, or Loraine, & neither Betty as none of them have ever worked. You have to pay into Social security to get the amount you are claiming. My cousin used to abuse substances and would continually ask for money for living expenses but then would spend it on alcohol and drugs. It was only when instead of giving money we bought the items directly did they start to correct their life. Sometimes giving money directly is not the answer.
Yeah that's your cousin. Mark is a busy man living on the opposite end of the country from these people and it's just one of the many people he's helping out.
It's never the answer. That's why you don't give money to people on begging on the corner because they're going to use it typically on drugs and alcohol. Some of those people actually are not homeless they just don't want to work.
I work for something in Australia called the NDIS, its a disability service paid for by the government. I work with people like the Wittachers, not as bad but similar. They have no concept of money and they think about big things when they cant afford the small. You help them as much as you can but as soon as you start giving them money they will keep expecting it and wont remember any time that you helped or how much.
I wonder if they ever got social services. I'd have to rewatch the SWU videos. As adults, I think they have the right to refuse and I think the whole family is pretty much cognitively and physically challenged, so there are no family members who can step in that can put services into place. I worked with cognitively challenged adults in assisted living, but they also had guardians that got them into services. It could also be because they are in a very rural area that seems to be proverty stricken, so there might not be services for anyone.
@shethingsd I don't know how things work over there but we have two systems. The DSP (Disability Support Pension) and the NDIS(National Disability Insurance Scheme). The NDIS covers carers and all medical support and services. The DSP gives them around AUD$1200 a fortnight. We have services that look after their money which allows them to pay daily but in increments. As I said, I know the medical system works totally different but this is how it works here.
@@shethingsd No, if the family is legitimately as disordered as SWU and Mark have gone out of their way to convince people they are, adult protective services would be able to revoke their ability to refuse services like that very quickly, and appoint a guardian to them.

Mark didn't have a clear fundraising goal. It appears Mark started a GoFundMe to help with expenses, but it shifted towards raising money for a house. This change might be difficult for the Whittakers to understand, as the initial goal was to address their basic needs. With their mental disabilities how can you stop people from indulging in life creep and then go back to just saving for a goal. Having become reliant on the donations, how could Mark ask them to stop spending and save for a house?

If a donation is set up saying it is for housing, that money is marked for housing, and should not be used for anything else. The people donating are donating to get them housing, and not for cars etc. Then they should set up different funds, like one for housing and one for other expenses.
Except the donations were originally set up for helping the Whitakers with necessities/life. THEN it transformed into getting them a house. Mark wasn't wrong for giving them their own money.
All 3 partiies are definitely equal to blame. Tyler for kinda attacking him without full proof, and the other guy for not specifying where the money went. And finally the Whittakers for lying about where the money went.
I mean, the Whittakers are all disabled, vulnerable, and easy manipulated. They’re barely able to care for themselves, let alone be expected to handle money or answer questions reliably. Watching any of marks videos with them, it’s quite clear that Betty, whose the most capable of the bunch, is still suffering from severe cognitive disability.
He's made plenty of updates about them and helping them. What should he have done? Post an update every time he gives them their money? that was between Mark and the Whittakers. If it wasn't for an idiot like Oliver, there never would have been a problem.
Tyler has a history of being misleading. I remember one video of his that was titled "I went to the most homophobic town in America", with the opening segment outlining his thesis of traveling to a small town that actually banned all forms of LGBTQ expression in the city. However, he then spends 2/3rd of the video's runtime exploring a San Francisco Gay Pride parade, highlighting some of the strange people he met there. When he actually went to the town in the thumbnail, he didn't talk to any city officials, just a couple of local kids who agreed with the new policy. And then the video just ends. It felt like he really wanted to do a video about the "Kink at pride" issue, but was afraid of being seen as a bigot by the algorithm, so inatead sandwitched the stuff he was really interested in with clips from a completely different issue he didn't care as much about. Whatever the rationale, it felt very misleading.
Yeah, some of his videos I've watched, and he's a decent journalist, but what you just said describes a lot of his content. I genuinely do like him, but I think he needs to do a better job of being honest and not just doing it for clicks. If he's too afraid to post a real story that may get pushback, then perhaps he should reconsider doing it altogether.
In his video about immigration in NY one of the people standing outside the school with signs who he ended up interviewing as an upset local turned out to actually be the brother of the guy he had showing him around.

It's an American social worker with a specific narrative about homelessness and mental illness mixed with decriminalization and drug addiction. Nothing about the video was factual, he never asks any real person with actual knowledge on what is going on locally. It was a complete farce. It's fearmongering, calling every single person they see a drug addict and insinuating all this crime right in front of them that we can literally see isn't actually happening as they describe it. Dude is as much of a Journalist as Jesse Waters or Tucker Carlson was. Which is not at all, just a muppet with an opinion, not looking for the facts at all.
In one of his videos the family shows him all of the stuff that they bought. Even added a trailer and another little house. I totally believe that they did dollar out the funds to $0. I also believe that they were playing the other guy who ate it up. Acting like they had no idea where the money was. They spent it! They even had all new appliances with full freezer's and refrigerator's. I don't blame him for giving up on them because they started using him. Then stabbed him in the back to scam someone else. I'm curious if the other guy started a go fund me for them?

When you said neither guy was ready to handle this situation you hit the nail on the head. What the hell was Mark doing bankrolling these people with thousands of dollars every couple weeks? That's insane! Your average American working full time isn't earning that much. And like you said, the money should've went toward the house. That was the point, that Mark be the adult and manage the money properly, the hard way but the RIGHT way. It's like kids begging for candy. The adult has the be the adult and say no, whether it's fun or not.
Totally understandable take, but it’s their money.. not his): imagine if he withheld it? Then maybe he would be seen as someone trying to keep the money):
@noemoneytoya8758 I think sometimes you gotta be a dick in life and use some tough love. He could have maybe donated the money to a different person or place.
Considering the size of the family, 100000$ a year isn’t actually more than average Actually, it’s less. If they weren’t unable to work, and each one brought in minimum 30k a year, it would well over that amount
They had the change to purchase the house across the road but mark said VERBATIM the money wasn't coming in quick enough to close on it during c-19. Yall need to look into who mark laita is!
If people donate money specifically to buy a house, then the money should have been used to buy a house. It's not the Whitakers's money. It's money for a house and the house belongs to the Whitakers once it's purchased.
Even though I agree, the family would have continued to say they weren't getting the money even though they asked for it. Mark would have been targeted by individuals regardless. Others will say the point was to help the Whitaker family and the money is theirs. Many posts on this page are on that side of the argument. If they had won the lottery jackpot, the Whitakers would have squandered it all quickly, back to zero.@@sdaniels160
To be fair when you raise funds clearly stating that the purpose is to buy a house, it should be for the sole purpose of buying a house. Mark should have clearly updated the donors on how the money raised was spent and not only doing so when questioned.
So those people that's their money and they asked for the money cuz they need it for help he's supposed to say sorry about your emergency but we're going to get you a house instead that's not how it works sorry you don't know that
Some people keep saying "it's their money!" if you say Mark shouldn't have let them take out money every time they asked, but it's not simply "their money", it's their money fundraising for a house. Fundraisers are legally fraudulent if the money is used for other purposes than the fundraiser stated.
yes this is the real issue he raised money under false pretenses of buying a house which is a clear end goal, not "support this family forever ". A lot less people would of donated if you told them out right were just gonna give them money forever I also didnt know you were even allowed to take go fund me money if the goal wasn't met
You clearly have no idea on how any of this works so here are the basics. The money is the Whittakers since the GoFundMe was specifically made to financially benefit them which means if Mark wanted any control over that money he would have to get a power of attorney which is extremely difficult if you are not related, and if he withheld any penny of those funds they could hire a lawyer and sue him into the ground. Your picture perfect internet morals and your twisted view on reality doesn't make you right, it makes you painfully ignorant.
@@Cumin69 It's not "Internet morality", it's legality. Using the funds for things different from the fundraiser's stated purpose is fraudulent. It makes the fundraiser a scam. They could be prosecuted for doing so.
I watched Marks whole video when it was posted and the guy was really hurt by this. He has helped these ppl so much and cares deeply for them and just felt kicked in the teeth when Betty said she didnt know where the money went. Mark seems like a very good man not many would do what he did for these ppl. I understand why he is walking away.
He can't play both sides. He wants to help them and is helping them because they have moderate-severe mental handicaps. That is a great thing to do. But when you know they have varying ranges of mental handicaps, you can't expect them to represent reality as he knows it and get butthurt because a mentally disabled person that he knows well said things the wrong way or that seemed mean. I have a cousin with downs syndrome and he is so sweet but lacks any social etiquette. He will say things like "it looks like you gained some weight" or "this food tastes weird" and you have to understand that it's not personal and he isn't saying it to be mean. To him he just observes and says what he thinks. It would be wrong and insensitive for me to ignore his disability and hold him to the communication manners/standards of someone without his mental deficiency. Mark was obviously burned out and this event was his last straw and a way to exit.
@@billybumpers That would be the case but it has been shown and proven that the family is aware of the money in some way shape or form. They keep in regular contact with Mark, and saying "We haven't seen any money", is either a straight-up lie or a strange lapse in memory for people who have regular access to the products they have bought. Bought with said money they asked for every other week. I had a disabled Uncle in the past. He couldn't vocalize speech properly, but he knew how to communicate and he was capable of lying.

I still don't understand why these youtubers are even 'helping' this family. I mean, they've survived this long - there are so many people in the world worse off, what makes them so special? They all looked well fed, they were living peacefully - now it's just a mess. This family knew exactly what they were doing.
To be fair, I think both sides messed up. Mark should've been transparent because he has been interviewing the Whittakers for along time and no updates were really given. Tyler definitely should have made a bigger effort to reach Mark, but I don't know. Whittakers definitely took advantage of the help they were given.
Oh I read other comments where it said it was the videos rip encoding. I don’t know what that is but Tyler was doing it too so it has something to do with the video. It was super distracting

When Muta and Karl Jobst looked into The Completionist charity the law actually was saying that if you raise donations to be used for something, you have to use it for that thing. Not telling people that the money is going to be used in a different way and to keep getting donations for a home knowing that wasn't going to happen is an issue. People who do this fundraisers really need to start looking at the legality of what they are doing and keep people updated if they are making changes.
Yep. From my understanding, you can’t have a fundraiser for something specific, and then change your mind about how that money will be utilized. People donated their money, under the impression it would go towards what they were told it would go towards. So, in a way.. Shifting that goal post is fraud - even if it is going towards the same family/people.
Okay, but he never had the full amount to be used for a house they could never take care of. They needed food, regular house maintenance, cars, groceries, etc. Was he supposed to wait 3 years to buy the house while the family struggled?
@@amlodipine4250this is actually one of the problems with the law. Yes. As written that money should have been denied to the family until it could buy a house. Now what happens if it never hits the target and they can’t buy a house. That’s right they never see the money. What if they get more money than they need to buy a house? They can’t spend it unless that can classify it as buying that house leading to “stuck donations.” Which leads to waste, as it’s better to spend that money on “something” for the donated area than having it become stuck. The worst bit, (as it’s harder to fudge than money;) are donated goods. These also have to be used for the purpose donated. This leads to warehouses of tents as they have more than they need for one emergency but can’t send them to other areas as that’s not what it was donated for, (or my personal favourite post Indonesian tsunami, one community getting approximately three bibles per person.) It’s a major pain for large charities as lots of nations have similar laws.
@@amlodipine4250 Considering the fact they're still struggling even with the money, yes. He should've specified that some of the money would go to food.
Going to people whose sole claim to fame is their rampant inbreeding...and taking their word as well-informed fact to attack someone else...HAS to be an act of malice. That's like leading a child into lying about their parents and taking that as fact.
If Mark refused to give the Whittakers the money as they asked for it, in order to save enough for a house Tyler would have just made a different video about why isn't Mark giving the money to the people it's for when they need it. It's a lose lose situation. Going from no money to having access to money tends to have an effect on people.
I couldn't pay attention to what Mark was saying because of the strange way every inhale and slight throat noise was AMPLIFIED. Crazy weird sounds. Closed captioning saved me... Thanks for covering this.
Right? How did that even happen? I don't know a thing about recording audio, but it's so strange how much louder those noises seem than his actual speaking...
I was wondering if Atozy ran it through an amplification process, perhaps. i noticed it even when his assistant spoke for a brief moment, and even when Tyler was speaking so it wasn't limited to a single person or even a single video. The reason i noticed it in Mark is because he spent so much time talking... But that's really my only guess I really don't know...
Mark shouldn't have given them so much money. he is giving thousands per month to people who clearly cannot take care of themselves. it doesn't matter if it's there money, he should have tighten the leash especially if he doesn't know where the money is going. Tyler didn't put that much time or thought into it & felt like his job was said and done.
Mark seems to be a genuine guy that just wants to shed light on those in need and tell their stories. One of his interviews was with a man whose brother saw the video on the channel. The brother then was able to track down where his brother was homeless in another state and reunite and get him help. I admire the work he does with Soft White Underbelly and I can totally see him being somewhat taken advantage of by the Whittakers and their GoFundMe.
Not at all. He recently showed a baked child on his channel then only when people complained out the uncensored video behind a paywall. Check out that surprise witness tv or Bj investigates soft white underbelly. Mark and Lima jevremovic are evil exploitative people.
There have been several articles and videos about how exploitative and problematic Mark is. He allegedly drives around Skid Row looking for vulnerable people he can exploit for content, and they end up sharing incredibly personal stories and reliving past trauma on camera out of desperation, because he tells them he can help them get off the streets. Look up “Soft White Underbelly controversies”. I read all of this before I knew about the Whittaker situation (which I only found out about today when this popped up in my recommended videos). Edited to add that I think Tyler’s content is scummy and exploitative, but I recommend looking into the criticism surrounding Mark too. I don’t think he’s as genuine as you think sadly.
You mfs bitching never watched his videos and never donated a penny, I’m sure you’ll say you are the top donater to make a point but we all know everyone here ain’t put a fucking dime in
Have you been on the SWU channel? 😂obviously not! He made a video and brought receipts STFU unless you know what you’re saying! It’s THEIR money and not his to determine what it’s spent on! @@candaceewell9582again lying about where the money is going isn’t good either because you’re lying to the people who are putting there hard earned money to them. You seem hyped for nothing
Why is it so hard for people to understand that if you raise money for someone, you don't get to decide how it gets spent? He assumed they would want money for a better home so started a fund for that. But they wanted to spend it on other things instead. Is this really that difficult to understand?
Last i seen of The Whittakers was 2 years ago. Mark was helping one of the kin to move into a trailer directly adjacent to the main house. It might have been an uncle from the main household. It was about as basic as a one room cabin. During that episode, i am pretty sure mark made several mentions about dolling out funds. He legitimately did disperse funds on a regular basis. I am impressed that he used some sort of accounting system to track these transfers as opposed to straight cash disbursements.
I come from a family of poor people. My father is broke. He was making $200,000 a year. He grew up in a family then never taught him the importance of money management. I make 60k a year. Have a house, a decent car, and a planned retirement. These are things that with more than 3 times my income he doesn’t have. I wanted to be difference, learned to budget, took financial management course, and met with multiple financial advisors. The people aren’t able to grasp the idea that financial management is a skill that can be improved.
@@christycullen2355 I think you kind missed the point of my post. My dad made a lot and lost it all, his poor mentality kept him from being able to manage it. He made 200k, he saved 0 at the end of the year. Ended up spending everything including his IRA on prostitution and drugs. He’s now probably sitting around 200k in debt with no income, no house, no car, in and out of jail.
@@casa4817 not really. His parents had no money, my mom had no money, my family has no money. My parents got a divorce when I was young, lost his job and stopped paying child support after six months, got addicted to drugs and went to jail. I’ve lived more days with people who struggled to put gas in their car than didn’t. I’m just saying some people are sink holes that money can’t pull them out of. He did make 200k for a small amount of time but squandered the money and opportunity that came with it.
Disingenuous people are, unfortunately, a reality. When you made the last video featuring Tyler, he kind of reminded me of every other "hack" who can't leave people OR well enough alone and thus must turn around so he can start smaking beehives with bang sticks! My first assessment was right because he got in his feelings about the gofundme and decided to make a slambook style ending to his video instead of calling Mark asking where the money was and recording said conversation. Tyler wanted rage bait, so that's what he created. Tylers second video is just as disgraceful as he claims innocence when we all watched him spend 8 minutes slamming Mark in the first one.
Yeah this guy Tyler wanted a video to bring in views. But at the same time Mark is enabling damaging behaviors by handing them money instead of getting someone to properly handle the funds of this special needs family. Mark knows how people like this work, he has been interviewing people like this for years, so he knows how these type of people mishandled their own funds leading them to bad situations.
OP, the word hack means what it means and needs no punctuation, let alone incorrectly quoting nobody at all. 'Hack' in inverted commas would imply so-called or supposedly and mean you imply he isn't a hack journalist.
Couldn't 250K buy a whole town in West Virginia outside of Huntington? I would be a little suspicious if I donated to a "buy them a house" fundraiser and the people running it weren't spending it on a house
Mark literally explained everything in his video. There’s absolutely nothing odd. It was their money and mark couldn’t just keep it from them when they would ask for money.
Mark has always been horrible at managing these donations. I remember him years back attempting to help a prostitute and it turned out she was playing him for the funds the whole time.
Not saying Tyler is a innocent here either, he has always seemed like a click bait douce nozzle. Even in his Brent vid he came off as just as big of a dirt bag as Brent.
Mark is super sketchy. His association and absolute defense of Lima Jevremovic (or whatever last name or alternate spelling she is currently using to be secretive) is a serious problem. A woman named Amanda died in her care at an experimental treatment program after being forced into treatment after making a video with Mark. She used Amanda's father, who she had run away from as a teen after he allegedly SA'd her, to help force her into an experimental treatment program. She tried and failed to get a conservatorship against Amanda, but she succeeded into forcing her to stay at the treatment center. She very publicly lied about her cause of death. She is dangerous, and Mark has supported and defended her aggressively. Oh yeah, I forgot about the time he showcased a teen prostitute and didn't care that her areola were clearly visible through the shirt. He finally edited it after it had tons of views and an insane amount of complaints. Don't believe me? Start by watching patrick CC"s video titled "The Deadly Experiments of Lima Jevremovic" and continue with That Surprise Witness' videos

I dropped SWU when he titled that video "Problems With Being Beautiful" about a girl that got her massively attacked by the community. She never claimed to be beautiful, and the whole interview he kept telling her how gorgeous she was and she was clearly uncomfortable.

That family is never gonna get a house. Tyler is just further enabling their terrible financial decisions. Unless he has the balls to turn them down when they ask for money every few weeks from them. I guess we shall see.
As much as i agree that Tyler is poking at Mark I don't understand why people are overlooking Mark's past and realize maybe he's not as great of a person as he leads on. Look up what he did to Amanda Rabb. Mark only cares about making money for himself. He also should be mentally aware enough that maybe they should have been a middle person to manage their money like Paige. I think this recent video is just to cover his butt before people do more digging.

I totally agree. Mark is making bank by using these people to get views. He's not running a charity. He is pocketing all that ad revenue. Based off the 89M views figure that was quoted in this video, that is a very substantial six or seven figure sum. And that's just the ad revenue. God knows how much he's making off of them through all his other revenue streams. He should be paying them per episode, just like a traditional TV network would. He isn't though, so he's exploiting their lack of business savvy. Mark is far from being a saint.

Why did Mark suddenly start dishing out the money, thar he knew was not going towards a home, after he was called out by another youtuber and being involved in the death of Amanda Raab?
If you ever look into SWU you can tell it's shady. Endless GoFundMes with very few updates. Maybe he even means well when he makes the videos but at the end of the day he's essentially pretending to be a charity while not having any of the necessary oversight, and at worst he's profiting off of making poverty p*rn
He explained that it is their money and he doesn't have the right to say no. This case is just like some uneducated people who have never had money winning the lottery or signing a professional athlete contract and then being broke in 4 or 5 years.
Tyler did contact Mark and Mark chose to lie to him about having an exclusive contract with the family. There is no reason that Tyler should think that Mark is a trustworthy person based on that. Tyler did make assumptions, but they were based on a first impression that Mark chose to put out there.
Tyler has effectively raised public awareness about how irresponsible, manipulative, and untrustworthy the Whittakers are. I'm surprised that people keep donating to them, and it's karma that Tyler now has this financial responsibility to them. Even more shocking is the price of real estate in that area.

In the latest Whittaker vid they mention a contract that was signed to ensure the family members that started showing up will not be given any of the money. For example, a drug addict daughter told Mark that the father had died, and she needed money for his funeral. The Whittakers don't have anyone to protect them from their extended family.

I admittedly took a biased stance due to some other investigative videos about Mark Laita. I will leave this update up so people can be aware and know that I was wrong and Mark was innocent.
Agreed. This feels shady. The biggest thing for me is it makes NO SENSE for SWU of all channels to not understand the idea of nuance and complexity when it comes to any mental health/challenge and/or addiction concerns. If his whole job is focusing on people in rough situations, how the hell has he NOT already gotten educated on how best to help people long-term, what to do and NOT to do with money or resources for vulnerable people, and more? Him just giving money randomly is super bizarre to me, because anyone who's spent 2 seconds in a social service industry like this would know about common issues and should have developed a system to protect those involved from themselves and others. If they're in a privileged position like SWU where they can lean into that creativity without being hampered by the red tape other organizations may have to navigate, they could really make a huge difference for people. Sometimes the private industry or private individual can leap far above or beyond what government or nonprofit organizations can do. This would be the absolute perfect chance and situation for him to use his status and limited rules to create some sort of comprehensive, ongoing, holistic solution not just for the Whittakers alone but also for the region. If he's that involved with the Whittakers for so long then it would make sense to develop some sort of task force or local location where local departments/staff/volunteers/residents who are trustworthy can do the legwork and use their education to opt for best practices, while the Internet can help support the endeavors monetarily and with attention. Even if he created a tiny little group focused just on the Whittakers it could be used as a pilot project to potentially expand in the future to help the greater community It's already weird to me the GoFundMe was raising money for a house without earmarking it for that... But in addition, why the hell would the money be going directly to him?? If people are donating in general for the Whittakers, why did he not create some sort of PayPal or other account where the money stays separated? It makes sense somewhat if he is doing this to save up enough money for a house -- but he's not. He says he gives them money when they ask for it. So if he's not doing the responsible thing of getting them a financial advisor or at least consulting someone similar on best practices and what to do on their behalf... Then it's just another bank account. If he's letting them spend the money on anything then they shouldn't have to go to him to get it in the first place. Other things stand out to me as red flags as well, but this part alone seems definitely like a Coffeezilla question
the fact he uses his pool of underserved & vulnerable people to hand over to an unqualified woman for vr therapy... yeah hes a TOTALLY generous guy with no ulterior motives 🥴
YES . Mark and Lima are shady as hell. Why is no one talking about this?! OMG the lies. You think he’s stupid? He understands exactly what he’s doing and exactly what he’s getting away with. -And yet…you just believe almost every word out of his mouth, save the ones that actually expose a more sinister side to him. He admits he makes a lot of money, after you ate up every sad thing he just explained to justify willfully irresponsible behaviors and decisions and LIES. He creates a go fund me, for a deeply cognitively ill family, telling all future donators that THEIR money will be going to a home for them…and then states he just gives it to them, in whatever segmented amounts they call him for, for whatever it is they say they need/want. He dismisses the fact that they’re not cognitively capable of having good money management, the fact that he hasn’t told any donator nor any future donator that he’s doing this, what the money is actually supposedly going toward…where’s the evidence of what they’ve purchased with ~$77,000? Where is $77,000 worth of purchased items? Then he says he gives them his own money from his own account and shows SOME evidence of that…did he not show evidence of where the money from the go fund me transferred to? He says he gives them his own money because whatever altruistic thing…and yet he’s made how much money off of these people? He says he makes a LOT of money just off ppls raging comments, calling him a fraud and exploiter. That’s just comments. You do know he pays these ppl he interviews a few dollars to interview them, right? Again…he makes far more than he gives and he gives them these snack amounts in order for them to even interview with him. That’s not the same as payment for a service…that’s enticing vulnerable ppl for the continuance of his wealth. And at one point, he refused to create a go fund me for the ppl he interviewed, denying innumerable requests that he do so, because he didn’t want to manage it. Because he said it was too complicated for him to take ppls donations and help them get distributed. But…he’s making these videos because he cares about them? The last thing I knew of that he was exposed in doing, was to a minor, a 13 yo girl on the streets who turned to selling her body for survival. Without legal consent…AND EXPOSING HER BREASTS TO THE CAMERA, as she’d come in wearing a transparent top. You know how he does the still shot planning of everyone’s person? You don’t think he saw her breasts? He also commonly uses inappropriate language with his interviewees. Including the 13 yo old girl. You know what he did with her video, after the outrage poured in? He put it on his subscription platform…her breasts not even blurred. You think he’s stupid? You think he isn’t aware of the predators he’s offering access to? He’s not altruistic…he’s making money off of people’s lowest moments. He could do all manner of good with his platform and the incredible amount of ppl that follow him…but what he does is help himself by exploiting others. Period. The actual good he could do, the list is incredibly long. And he simply doesn’t. He’s not interested in improving anyone’s life…he needs them to stay desperate. Where would he profit if he actually helped to change the world and the systems they’re trampled forgotten by?

$14K $5K I didn't see any of that and 1 of those transfers shown was not to her. If he was giving them that much money he had a responsibility to find out where it's going. Betty's bank account needs to be looked at. There is something wrong here. 200K for a home across the street from that rathole no way
15:17 and despite any mistakes this man-made regarding updating the GoFundMe and what the family was doing with the money, it was undeniably irresponsible and completely antagonistic journalism. Tyler was 100% in the wrong here.
Tyler asked a NEEDED question, in an accusatory way, for entertainment....Wrong. But then Mark completely stopped helping people who needs his help, because some randoms on the internet asked NEEDED questions about something he wasn't being transparent about....Waaaay more wrong. Mark cleared his name for STEALING, BUT he made it worse for being an oversensitive jerk. He shouldn't be on the internet, if that's all it takes for him to cry and stop helping people. Asking how hes helping.... Tyler has long since, not been the main focus here. Hes just the initial question asker....
Mark is a big boy… HE choose to walk away after grossly mismanaging over $100,000 dollars of donations, and stating it was to go towards a house. Mark should ABSOLUTELY be held accountable.
Mark is spread incredibly thin with all the people he comes into contact with constantly needing attention or money. He is a documentarian, not a social worker and also has a life and a family to look after. Can you blame him for being fed up when people he has helped throw it back in his face? I hardly think this is the first time his good intentions blew back on him.
He gave them 100k and then they lied and said that he didn’t. Why should he still be responsible for helping them anymore when they clearly don’t deserve it? He has helped them enough.
@joshualee4209 Except he never addressed the other go fund me for the other people on his channel at all. Mark is a disgusting human, watch BJ investigates video on him. He exploits underage, homeless and uneducated people. He admits himself he's not a "helping channel."
The amount of money they ask at the frequency they asked it is kinda suspicious. Drugs, reckless spending, etc. I hate it when generosity is taken advantage of.
@@Ph0_Sh0Now compare that to the amount of money he's made in exposure alone from the Whittaker family. Do you think he genuinely cared what the money went to at the end of the day if it kept a clean line of communication and effectively a contract open with the family? I certainly don't. I agree, sounds bogus to me.
Mark Laita interviewed a 14 year old girl on the streets with no adult supervision, posted pictures of her naked chest, and included information about where she could be found in LA as an extremely vulnerable minor and she is apparently now missing. Mark cares about the spectacle of the people on his channel and the money the views and patreon get him, not their wellbeing or safety.
He broke off contact with them as soon as they talked to another youtuber as well becuse he had a contract with them to profit off them just shows he only cares to profit off them. Mark doing it with a entire list of people with problems the money he makes from his youtube videos not going to them the money from the gofund me was he was taking advantage of other people as well.
People are always shocked when they find out that people who are dirt poor don't manage money very well.
That's because they don't have experience managing money as they aren't used to having enough money to require management!

betty is the most mentally there one in the family, the rest of them dont know at all whats going on really so how can you blame the whole family? and even then betty is litterally inbred too so being the person who is not inbred (presumably) you wouldnt take her lying personally?
tyler didnt report in bad faith, he genuinely believed that mark wasnt giving money to the whittakers. it would only be in bad faith if tyler knew what was going on but deliberately reported misleadingly. its also unlikely mark can hold up his exclusive contract to the whittakers as they do not possess the cognitive capacity to comprehend what the contract entails. doctrine of non est factum, look it up

‘Oh you’re gonna need all of this for your house’ or ‘it’s gonna take all of this to fix your car…’
Even scatterbrained people will sometimes get parts for one project and parts for another and soon nothing is complete but theyre stuck because they didn’t plan it out properly.

It's about the lack of transparency.
Ray is the “dog barker” but they definitely exaggerated about him being tied up😂
That's exactly what my bud in WV says it's like, too. I feel bad for that family because they genuinely need the help

They literally do not have the mental capacity to live life.
They've likely never had money and no ones taught them. They're used to not having the money so when they get it theres a scarcity mindset and they gotta use it before they lose it.

Yea all sides seem confused causing more confusion but mark should’ve been more transparent with the money, and the whittakers don’t help either side
Oh and Tyler should’ve investigated more before releasing the video
I mean, the Whittakers are all disabled, vulnerable, and easy manipulated. They’re barely able to care for themselves, let alone be expected to handle money or answer questions reliably. Watching any of marks videos with them, it’s quite clear that Betty, whose the most capable of the bunch, is still suffering from severe cognitive disability.

I'd say that's smart
In his video about immigration in NY one of the people standing outside the school with signs who he ended up interviewing as an upset local turned out to actually be the brother of the guy he had showing him around.

It's an American social worker with a specific narrative about homelessness and mental illness mixed with decriminalization and drug addiction. Nothing about the video was factual, he never asks any real person with actual knowledge on what is going on locally. It was a complete farce. In one of his videos the family shows him all of the stuff that they bought. Even added a trailer and another little house. I totally believe that they did dollar out the funds to $0. To be fair when you raise funds clearly stating that the purpose is to buy a house, it should be for the sole purpose of buying a house. Mark should have clearly updated the donors on how the money raised was spent and not only doing so when questioned.

If i donated so they could get a house but it turns out they just bought bullshit with it id demand a refund

@@billybumpers That would be the case but it has been shown and proven that the family is aware of the money in some way shape or form.
Shifting that goal post is fraud - even if it is going towards the same family/people.
why though? whos stopping them? the law means nothing if its not enforced.
This leads to warehouses of tents as they have more than they need for one emergency but can’t send them to other areas as that’s not what it was donated for, (or my personal favourite post Indonesian tsunami, one community getting approximately three bibles per person.)
It’s a major pain for large charities as lots of nations have similar laws.

Because of this comment I'm going down the rabbit hole and two things.
1. Thank you

The Whittaker's are getting 0 donations now. And no one has a "financial responsibility" to that family
That's the problem with getting involved with people like that. People only want more.

So then there'd be no altruism

True, but in certain situations it does help with fundraising as it gets the word out there and brings the donations in

Mark laita is genuinely an evil person. I used to watch SWU for years and something felt off about him, but after going down that rabbit hole, all of my weird feelings were justified
What are you even talking about? The "BJ investigates" video has severe negative reactions because her entire point was "mark doesn't help people" when the channel is literally mini documentaries, not a Red Cross foundation. Also Bam is *literally* a jackass lolcow getting farmed by TMZ. Don't see what that's related to at all.

In the latest Whittaker vid they mention a contract that was signed to ensure the family members that started showing up will not be given any of the money. For example, a drug addict daughter told Mark that the father had died, and she needed money for his funeral. The Whittakers don't have anyone to protect them from their extended family.
I feel like Betty needs a power of attorney over finance because it seems like she can’t handle the funds. Or a public guardian to handle the funds and have Mark stay out of it.
Well, here is the rub. If they are non able to manage themselves, then they cannot sign a contract. No more exclusives!
Looks like Mark is doing what he can and he has breathing issues? Kind of weird hearing it, but yeah not relevant.
I don't think she's even mentally sound enogh to understand what she needs
all so far I've seen comments of people acting like this family knows that they're poor of money management when it looks like by their actions faces and reactions that they don't seem to have a damn near clue what's going on half the time. probably some in their age going through dementia at the same time.
why act like they know what they need when they probably have no damn clue what they really need vs what htey don't or they wouldn't BE in this situation and one would be able to talk. and not bark.....
Facts
The last person that was put under a conservatorship through mark’s connections ended up dead under suspicious circumstances, so I wouldn’t trust him with that.
I agree that Mark should have been more transparent. Also, I think that even if they achieved their goal of getting the new house, the family probably would have had a hard time maintaining it since they had so much other expenses
'More' transparent? 😂 Just transparent will do!
I just want to preface this by saying that I'm not saying Tyler is in the right. I don't know if Soft White Underbelly did this, but he should definitely provide a 100% accounting of the money to allay people's fears. A screenshot of a few transfers isn't enough if he wants to keep people's confidence. (Edit: I originally said 'if he wants to donations to continue, but then I finished watching and Atozy cleared things up)

Edit: So it turns out that Mark Laita was not at fault here. I would like to apologize for for making assumptions before definitive evidence was presented. I admittedly took a biased stance due to some other investigative videos about Mark Laita. I will leave this update up so people can be aware and know that I was wrong and Mark was innocent.
Ive heard some interesting things about, the situation is weird
Even if he created a tiny little group focused just on the Whittakers it could be used as a pilot project to potentially expand in the future to help the greater community
It's already weird to me the GoFundMe was raising money for a house without earmarking it for that...
If Lima is so comfortable putting people into conservatorships, (bam margera) why didn't Mark put the Whittakers in a conservatorship so they could have help managing so much money?! Very odd to me! He knew they couldn't handle that money...most people couldn't either, but they have severe intellectual disabilities! Rip Amanda Rabb
The guy showed his bank statements.
Gotta love when people do this to themselves.
Yeah. Mark did this to himself. Any reasonable person would have reacted like Tyler did if you found out he was lying about having an exclusive contract with someone you want to work with so you don't try to contact them. There is literally no reason for ANYONE in Tyler's position to contact him for a second time because "Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus"

Just say it in english, nobody understands latin. "ONCE A LIAR. ALWAYS A LIAR" basically afaik. No need to be pretentious
@@ghagzor Everyone knows that phrase. It's a court argument. There is nothing pretentious about it. If you don't, you have been living under a rock. It's especially important to say it in Latin because I am referencing a commonly used legal argument, so people who knows the legal system would get what I'm referencing. It's even more important because this phrase is what determines most people's life and death, not just some argument in a RUclips comment section. If his fans say "well you can lie once or twice" I can point to "Falsus in unos, Falsus in omnibus" which is the argument government prosecutors use to convince the jury finding people guilty. If this phrase is enough for people who never know you to determine your life and death, why can't Tyler refer to this when making a video?
If people donated with the intention of it going to the house that's what it should have been.

Go to BJ Investigates, an extremely qualified individual that has done her due diligence, through her skills as a former high profile attorney, her unwavering morals & intelligence, where you’ll find, easily, just how deceiving Mark is. Although you had plenty of clues in this one video, all by itself…and that’s how Mark gets away with doing what he does. These things right in front of ppls faces, just fly right over millions of ppls heads. -In THIS video, he admits he makes a LOT of money off of what he does and he admits it in a rather revealing way, exposing a quick glimpse of his arrogance. And this is a guy that has no problem with the fact that he has blood on his hands, having orchestrated everything leading up to one young girl’s death. He claimed the same damn thing, that ppl just want to make shit up and gain money and clout…except BJ had every piece of legal evidence, every piece of referential evidence, from his and his cohort’s mouth proving how irresponsible and incompetent they were with this young persons life… and the lies. Where would he profit if he actually helped to change the world and the systems they’re trampled forgotten by?
woah, really? comments like this remind me that I need to do my own research before immediately taking one side of a story.
