  • "Neverending Stories" are a fantasy that may soon be reality. But after decades on the shounen anime treadmill, that dream sounds more like a nightmare to me, even if they fix all the bugs.
Here's why it's good for us to Let Goku (and Homer, Jerry, Boruto's dad, etc.) Die.

But it would also probably be too little too late, so someone should either take this concept and make their own thing with it, or link me to a story that does this, cuz I wanna read/watch that.

Agreed, thou that causes the I hated part ___ stuff, risking people not liking an entire 4 years of writing is a bit much just so they may like another swift change in plotting. Also say what you will about dbz...but jiren vs goku and freiza was fire, the world was hyped for that...ill take that over forcing the studios to gamble on new properties and try get my attention over 12 eps that may or may not hit and gets thousands of hate and MID comments causing them to fear closer, and keep my safe net of dbz nostalgia if they have peaks in fights that feel like were watching a boxing match. They can't put that type of excitement into any show. If it was randos with like 34 eps under their name I wouldn't get the same excitement. New shows are an investment and sometimes I'm able to get both...no need to get rid of everything cause critics like MB and others hate rewatching or seeing sequels if they're not gripping tales of fantasy with modern twists and turns.

It's WHY I switched to manga, rather than even bothering to attempt getting every fuckin marvel comic to get the whole story that never ends, referencing shit that happened in 1970.
Essentially, Dragon Ball Super is artistically bankrupt, cynical, cash-grab bullshit.
Gt had good ideas, but Dragon Ball _ended with Buu._
Edit: yeah... posted this before even watching, and this video says EVERYTHING I've been saying about Dragon Ball for the last 15 years.
Remember all that horrible central/south American "fanart" of shit like SSJ8 Goku, which was just an existing picture of SSJ3 somebody recolored to give him beige hair with a white skunk stripe down the middle?
It's sad when people can't let something go to that degree. And I for one was fine with Dragon Ball being thin as far as depth, actually preferring the early days before everything was screaming and powerups... characters had reasons to be there with varied abilities that helped out in all sorts of different situations, rather than it just being wannabe Aryans doing absolutely everything meaningful in a story that's just "punch mans so earth doesn't blow up."
      Whatever. Fuck it.
Even incomplete, Berserk is still a far better story by orders of magnitude, and it taking its creator's life to tell an intensely personal and realized tale has infinitely bittersweet beauty.

@@barl6412 ... and some other anime or movie did it in about half the time as FLCL. Instead of agreeing and adding another example in order to continue the conversation, you came off as disagreeing and trying to convince everyone that you had an even better example! Both are great examples but, quite honestly, Bebop is significantly more iconic and popular than FLCL. But, again, that's not the point. So if you really want to go there, then FLCL continued into a second/third season and currently stands at almost the same exact length as Bebop. Difference being FLCL came back exactly like this video calls DBZ out for doing.
Now anyway, both original series are great examples. There's a set story and vibe that the shows set out for that are accomplished by the end. For me personally, my first experience with such a short yet complete series was Cowboy Bebop (which came out over 2 years before FLCL). And I'm glad that there was a director successfully able to end a show in two seasons, perhaps inspiring other directors to do the same. If anything, it showed a large audience that doing something similar was successfully possible.
Personally, I was so stoked on the show, and intentionally sought out other shows with definitive endings. I was able to come to terms with a show that I liked ending, and eventually appreciate it moreso for that fact. What I really loved was talking to those around me about the show, and especially since it had already ended, we could talk about it as a whole. Even long shows that drag on then end just... weren't the same. But with a shorter series you could look back at every specific episode in a new light, and reevaluate it with the ending you know is coming up. Most series end too early due to getting cancelled, or drag on way too long. It's those gems that knew what they were doing from the get-go that seem to leave the largest impressions. Sometimes a single episode is enough, sometimes two seasons. And I don't mean to hate on longer series, I enjoy my fair share of those too. But to me, two or less seasons are a perfect length to get into a flow, but not take too long as to drag the show on.

Even ignoring anime, Regular Show and Ed Edd n Eddy both have a genuine conclusion to them. No post finale specials, no spinoffs, just places in their stories they felt was a nice point to finish up on. Regular Show's final season wasn't brought about by a cancelation, or rushed it's finale. The creators just felt they simply had told all the stories they wanted to with the characters, and gives the show a great send-off. I feel like, in a lot of ways, I'm the total opposite of this "never let anything end" character. I almost exclusively watch shows that have already finished (and gotten a proper finale). I actively seek out media that ends, because one of my favorite parts of the experience is after it ends. Everything that was meant to come together has done so, everything left lingering is supposed to be, the easy part -- letting the content enter your brain -- is over, and now all that's left is you and your thoughts and reflections. There's a melancholic emptiness to losing your window into the lives of those characters and the world they lived in, and having to just feel whatever feelings they left you with.
That said, I have room in my life for one piece of perpetual dumb fun, and that's Dragon Ball. I love every bit of the series, every movie, every show (except I haven't watched Heroes), most games, etc. It's just a piece of my life that is special to me, and I will continue to consume it for as long as I exist. I don't care if it never ends, and I'm also fine if it does. I mean, it *did* end for like a real hot minute there, and I was content with re-experiencing what existed. Now, more stuff exists and that's just a bonus. I stay excited for whatever comes next, and I won't have any guilt or shame for it. It doesn't consume my life, it just is, and I like it.

My issue with DBZ as it went on is that after a certain point it's really hard to illustrate that characters are getting more powerful.
It's fundamentally a Power System limitation.
When people are so fast they they appear to teleport, and blasts destroy everything in view, you're left to have characters inform the audience via dialogue that characters have done something more impressive than previously thought possible.

    • @basherblast
      @basherblast 4 месяца назад +2

Goku is so unfathomablely strong that they don't even try to quantify his strength anymore, and feats brought up in the show are purely just to affirm to the audience that he's still as strong as ever, and even then the feats that are shown are so ridiculous easy for goku to do its not even a true showcase of his power anymore. Goku gets millions of times stronger with each arc, so the concept of strength doesn't even truely matter anymore. The only point for fights in dragon ball is to develop new characters that have value for the story, give goku and vegeta a reason to keep fighting, and for fanservice because the main thing people watch dragon ball for is the fights, even though the best part by far is the characters, which were only really good during the original db-dbz run and up until battle of God's. After battle of God's, the point of the story was no longer to keep adding onto the development of characters, the show was basically just commercialized inorder to feed off of the hype created by the battle of God's movie, which ended up being more successful then anyone could have predicted. Now all dragon ball is, is a never ending loop of conflicts where new mediocre villains are introduced, then in the background, old villains regain strength and come back to fight the main cast, just to be defeated, and then a completely new villains shows up once again and the cycle repeats, that's the formula for dragon ball and it will probably stay that way until toriyama finally gets to old to be involved with the story, and give the "canon" stamp onto any db project that shuesha wants to churn out

In one of the early short arcs of The Sandman, Neil Gaiman had a character who worked in a diner, but wrote a lot of stories in her own time. And it explains that everyone liked her stories, because she knew when to end them. Because she knew the secret about stories -- if you keep a story going too long, it has to end in death.
I thought that was a pithy insight from Gaiman the writer. And while it probably was more foreshadowing, I still believe it's quite insightful.

It's easy to overlook when you're creating products designed to keep going til the money stops coming, like most shounen manga are, but the ending of a story is one of its most important, impactful parts. That closure is needed to truly complete it.

I go out of my way to seek out manga which have already reached a satisfying conclusion, and yet the amount of manga I'm currently reading that are still going through the monthly motions is *far* greater.
As an artist but even more as a human being, I have an infinite respect for those who have the integrity to let a good thing end, to leave the audience satisfied but still thinking about your story for years to come. Simultaneously though, I also crave that weekly flavor. As much as I laude the value of creativity being given proper room and pace, I am not immune to monkey brain.
More than anything though, what terrifies me the most is the prospect of a beloved story going unfinished. We can see this with Berserk, it's clear Miura had a conclusion in sight but the world just didn't let that come to pass. The longer a single story goes, the more chances are for it to simply stop. When that happens, far from being left with the memories of a tale told to its end, we can only wish forever that we could have seen what that ending was.
As far as I'm concerned, DBZ ended at the Cell Saga. But I truly hope I will be able to see that final chapter of One Piece.

Just a note regarding the DBZ Abridged series: if memory serves, they didn't just think that the Cell Saga was a good stopping point, but they were also incredibly drained from all the struggling against Toei just to get a single episode uploaded without being taken down due to copyright issues.
They're still putting out DBZA content that uses none of the existing story material and is all custom animated, but none of it is intended to be a means of continuing the story from where the main series left off. They just have passion for what they do, you know?

No the problem with pokemon is that Ash is the main character and when ash leaves the show should finish. It's actually okay if you have a passing of the torch, Dragonball could totally do that because goku had a son. Ash though cannot do that since there is nobody to pass the torch to, it would simply just be a poor replacement for ash not a passing of the torch. Goku can pass the torch down to Gohan because well gohan is already part of the story and he's the son he's the right person to pass a torch down to. It wouldn't really be a replacement for goku, because they both already exist in the same show since DBZ. Gohan has been there forever and he's became a main character too. You can't really just replace the main character with a completely new character nobody has heard of, unless of course it's Jojo's bizarre adventure then the way they do that is basically through family linage they still follow the concept of family relations so it makes sense and it's still a passing of the torch approach to it. You already know the families history so in that regard and retrospect it makes sense

This is a book that needs a remake, and this time we keep the scary twist in there to shock people back to reality. I believe that the careful lull of complacent pleasure is the single most terrifyingly evil enemy that mankind has ever encountered. It's the sickly sweet allure of all things addictive and self-destructive: The wafting aroma of an eating condition, the pungent wisps of chemical smokes, the rush of self-righteous rage, the comforting weighted blanket of self-pity, the hollow glow of helping people avoid solving their own problems, or the apathetic caress of a pornography actress. This is the part of us that's terrified to look into the dark corners of our lives, until our lives become little more than dark corners. We're so scared that we can't even think about our shame that we slide off to the side into fantasy and don't even know it, rather than stepping into the pain, confronting our mistakes, and reaching out for help to pull them up by the roots There is always hope. Step to the edge of light, step into the dark, and push back the dark with the light of belief paired with action. Identify the way your life is going, identify the steps you're taking in the wrong direction, and now TURN by taking different steps. Better steps. You'll find them. Ask around and don't lose your ability to trust people and ideas.

While One Piece is heading to it's ending, Kaguya-sama ended, and when I knew it would, I never felt such relief, and the worst part of the ending was literally the "and so the story restarts" between character X and character Y (avoiding spoilers, but if you read you know what I mean).
God how I wanted my homies that I've passed so many good moments to have their "and they lived happily ever after". I really love Kaguya, but for me the ending it's not only natural, it's necessary, it's beautiful and it's one of the most important things a story needs.
I read the last chapter with one of my best friends. We laughed, we cried and we remembered all the time we discussed and cherished theses characters and this story, but we were so glad it ended. We always have to let Goku die. To let stories finish and to let all the good things end.

Frankly, there's something in the history established for Dragon Ball Online that I think would allow for a perfect "passing of the torch" to... Not Gohan, but his daughter and her best friend, Pan and Bulla.
To summarize, Goku and Vegeta were realizing that they were growing older. As part of Saiyan Biology, they stayed in the prime of their youth for as long as possible, but now that time has passed and they're now rapidly growing older. And so, to die on their own terms, Goku and Vegeta go off into space a safe distance away from Earth, and decide to settle, once and for all, who's the strongest among the two of them.
Years later, a supernova would be discovered by scientists on Earth.

This video reminds me of what authors like Yoshihiro Togashi and Eiichiro Oda have said about Hunter x Hunter and One Piece. Either they live to finish the story, or the story ends with the author dying. Specifically in Togashi's case because of his medical problems and his long hiatus's. This was something that was always a bit of a joke for long-running and beloved manga's, but the death of Kentaro Miura was the biggest awakening of that always being a real possibility. And something like Berserk will never be the same because it's not being handled by the person who started it all.

Sure, it's 'neo-Western crime drama', instead of SF nearish future (neo)-Space Opera, but ultimately, both stories are about the characters, how they change and grow and how sometimes they don't/can't and never will. Plus so many of the performances are amazing, and not just Timothy Oliphant and Walton Goggins, though they are both outstanding.

That quote and its implications aside, I have... a lot of thoughts about what you're saying here. I think I'll tackle the most pertinent of all and see if I have any steam left in me first, how about that?
So! On the subject of endings, if I can be allowed to get on my soap box for a minute: no story, in an ideal world, really HAS to end. Every story will touch those that enjoy them in some way, there will be fanworks that carry on those stories, and eventually, those stories will enter the public domain. Goku himself only even exists because he and the earliest parts of his journey were aping (forgive the pun) Journey to the West, and someday, Haruhi willing, people will find themselves doing the same once Dragon Ball itself enters the public domain.
In fact, I would go as far as to say the problem isn't that Goku "needs" to die or that stories "have" to end, it's that we've let the way we think about stories become shaped by rights-holders and money-makers for far too long because the laws have made it so we have to. It's no longer natural to expect stories to be things writers and creators can work for purely out of passion the way it was when copyright could only be held onto for a maximum of like half a century- when things from our own lifetimes would still be relevant to the creators who grew up with them!
As things are now, maybe it is so, but eventually there will be a time when anyone can write their own Dragon Ball GT or Dragon Ball Super or Dragon Ball Saiyaman Epilogue, and it will be as perfectly valid and legal as if anyone sat down and wrote a story about Hercules or the like today. That's the beauty of it.
As a writer myself, I can think of no greater sign of success than something I created having reached so many people that they want to see the story continuing, that they might want to make stories branching off of it themselves. I realize that's a very generous, uncynical take on "let's take this successful IP and milk it dry," but I can't help but believe that before copyright laws were ruined, it was how creators were SUPPOSED to look at things.
Sorry, I think I got so high up on my soap box I think I got way off topic- or maybe I'm just burying my head in the sand to avoid thinking too hard about what you brought up about life and our own stories ending, potentially before we have the chance to tell all of the stories we want to tell. Either way, thanks for the great stuff as always.

20:55 This is the best part in the video IMO Every established Media Franchise is milking our nostalgia with a photocopy of a photocopy of something we love. Instead of going to see the latest StarWars/Predator/Alien/Terminator/DBZ/Spiderman, rewatching the classics is the best option. This vague sense of "familiarity" is what they prey on. GT is flawed but the one thing that i can't fault it for is the fact that it had an ending with finality and i'm glad GT exists, without it i would be waiting for an ending that is never going to happen.
Digimon is perhaps closer to my heart than any other show, it was a version of a fairy tale for the early 2000s kids growing up with the emerging technologies of cellphones&comptuers. The fantastical elements in the story merely existed to serve as a way to address the children's coming of age struggles relating to establishing independence from your parents, traumas and search for a new identity. The purpose of Adventure's story was to teach the viewers lessons about life, about growing up and facing adversity. This is why i can't stomach the commercialized perversion of Adventure, all the vapid sequels added nothing meaningful to the story.

DBZA ended in the best possible spot, even if i will miss them. The Cell saga was great, and the rest of DBZ and DBS feel like hollow imitations of what it was before.
Also, Shadow the Goku fucking killed me and i will be referring to the prince of all Goku's by that from now on.

This is why I consider the first season of The Seven Deadly Sins to be the best.
The anime could have ended at the first season and it would have been great

@@flow185The manga was actually good, so that's a different problem altogether. Nakaba wrote his manga with a very definite story to tell and end in mind, and he executed it pretty well. Heck, even his sequel manga actually works, since it also has a definite story its trying to tell with engaging OCs who aren't the original Sins.
