  • In this video we really do see the power of the GWR's 4 cylindered 'Castle' Class locomotives, as number 5029 'Nunney Castle' lifts a 9 coach train out of Weymouth up the 1 in 50 Upwey (Bincombe) Bank with no help from the rear.
This was the first railtour I had ever been on and I enjoyed myself a lot, traveling from Bristol Temple Meads to Weymouth, a seaside town I hadn't been to before, on the Heart of Wessex line, a route I had never rode before and the locomotive that hauled the train is probably my favourite engine on the mainline.
A big thank you to the 5029 Support Group and Nunney's owner Jeremy Hoskins for being able to provide her for this trip after the non-availability of both 70000 'Britannia' & 70013 'Oliver Cromwell', I somehow doubt it would of been anywhere near as good with a standard on the front of the train.
I have edited this video so that only the bits with the less wind noise are featured and when Nunney was storming. We also see the train along the way to Bristol Temple Meads including departing Bath Spa.
So just sit back, turn up the volume to full and listen to the 4 cylinders of 5029 working their hardest!

Very nice video; the climb over Upwey Bank demonstrates once again what extraordinary machines the Castles were.

Fantastic. Some recent trains got a diesel from Weymouth which is disgraceful

OH Dear All that fuss with nine coaches, Tangmere has "Blitzes" with 11 unassisted?

@liveuk I agree, brilliant soundtrack! The last pick up point is Frome. More details can be found on the Railway Touring Company's website, under UK Day Trips and then the Weymouth Seaside Coast Express.

I Might go on the Weymouth Seaside trip in the future when I save up some money. Not this year or next but maybe 2015.

Yeah I bet that was great, but I prefer the sound of a single chimney castle blasting away at the front!

Sorry but Tangmere boiler pressure as with all Light Pacifics has had its boiler pressure lowered to 250 psi from 280, so its performance is remarkable. Also its gone over Shap pulling 12 A Castle wouldn't even attempt it.

@@rolandlivings6165 I wonder whether the Castles have reached their full potential even now. Coal dust on the tables two coaches back suggests they are not as efficient as they could be. The sharp blast indicates that there is energy still in the exhaust steam.
If you watch a Bulleid Pacific hard at work, the exhaust is still quiet and only just clears the chimney. Some of the Castles and most of the Kings got double chimneys as a result of the work by Ell at Swindon. More is known about the subject now than in 1955, so perhaps the improvement could be made while keeping a single chimney, eg fitting a five jet blastpipe and a wider diameter single chimney.
The restoration of Thornbury Castle could be a chance to squeeze more performance out of a Castle.
