Dear BBC, you could have done better investigation on this. Why is it passed on to Turkey now? Because China has stopped buying "dirty plastic" from UK. By dirty, I mean not really well organised and separated from each other. Previously, the plastic has been sent to Hong Kong and thru that it got passed on to China, but China stopped accepting the not sorted out plastic from UK households and it would be painful to separate it there, so many shipments have stopped in Hong Kong and rot there, in the middle between China and UK. Recyclable plastic that was supposed to be processed by western countries, but instead dumped onto others to handle their own waste. Most of this plastic is then either burned or dumped into landfills.
Money. That’s what it all comes down to. The British government can get rid of our recyclable waste quickly, cheaply and look good doing so whilst the Turkish government pretends to recycle it and gets quick, easy money.
Apparently, Turkey was really good at waste management, but now government doesn't really wanna spend money on it. Everything's fucked up since Erdogan became president...
In the old days (before plastic bags became so commonplace), people were more resourceful and less wasteful. Cardboard boxes were often reused to put your groceries in, fish was wrapped in newspaper and bags were often made of straw or paper. Whenever I go food shopping, I take a cardboard box off the shelves to put my shopping in. I will then repurpose some of the boxes to be used as parcels.
That’s awful, Britain and Turkey should do something and work together immediately to save environment. Solution is very easy to build more cleaner recycling ♻️ also to ended middle man that created this problem and create oversight Agency .
They burn the bodies, too. Problem is that it turns into a fomite crystal which more readily bonds with alveoli in the lungs. So, another disposal method which, in reality, is a vector for transmission.

This is a shame for my country. Goverment has been not good at managing the country lately. But if BBC is honest about this news why don't you ask Erdogan (President of Turkey) why this is happening?
First, why can't the uK government properly educate the public, from kindergarten education to TV commercials, what to recycle and how to differentiate them? Second, when will the UK start more detailed separated recycling instead of the big fat lie "mixed recycling"?
we need to stop or drasticly reduce plastic production, we can do without plastic, we managed ok without it year,s ago, just about everything we buy in supermarkets is either in plastic bottles or wrapped in plastic, such as turnip, bananas, etc etc etc, some of which have their own skin protection, theres no need to wrap everything in plastic, they should use paper bags for fruit & veg etc, like we used to, also bring back glass bottles, for milk, lemonade & beer etc, with a deposit on lemonade bottles, we had better ideas year,s ago than we have now, & in a time when there was no climate change either.
All companies who produce or wrap their products in plastic should be changed with disposing and recycling that plastic. And no country should be allowed to dump their rubbish overseas. This entire planet needs a revolution in leadership.
It doesn't fill us with hope for a better world does it. Someone is accountable and this needs to be regarded as top priority. Plastic is going to strangle the world at this rate.
We are not your backyard trash can. Please, befitting European civilization, everybody clean up their own mess. Our country's economy is in a difficult and not well managed economy. Do not take advantage of these shortcomings and turn us into garbage.
I do not blame Turkey I blame us how can you give YOUR waste and pay someone else to get rid we are a lazy nation where the £££ does the talking we are a disgrace .it has happened before as well when it was dumped at sea .Shame on this country
Millions of tons annually are shipped by the British to countries where they don't have adequate equipment to handle all that trash. So they dump it in the sea. Near Hawaii is that trash mountain, the size of a large continent, floating ready to be eaten by the sea creatures...and finally by the humans. Thank you very much!
Another example of hyper consumption and waste in capitalism. It is unsustainable and will collapse under its own contradictions. There cannot be infinite growth in a world of finite resources.
Could anyone spot that none of the plastic burnt in lands was recyclable? It is obvious people did not carefully separate the plastics in the first place. Later in the video, plastic bottles were already joined in the recycling process. I think we better think about buying products in plastic less.
Recycling trash dosent mean pretending..or selling it to others..as a commodity...to chuck somewhere else. Reduce reuse...and charge people if we have too to keep products as paper...
@Mick Williams even on the unlikely scenario that climate change doesn't exist what does that matter to the plastic pollution crisis, surely no matter what the climate we should still respect the planet and keep it clean for ours and future generations, if there even is going to be a future generstion.
This is why I, at present, burn my plastic waste at home on as hot a fire as possible to help cook my food. I don't currently trust 'recycling' because i don't know where it's actually going. Some things are worth recycling - aluminium for example. But at present plastic recycling seems to only exist for the warm fuzzy feeling. If that changes then I'll recycle it but for now I prefer to know exactly what happened to it.
Reason is probably sending those to Turkey is way more cheaper. Bcs in these days prodducing plastic from oil cheaper then recycling since oil prices is way lower than before.
Recycling is a lose lose proposition - the cheapest way to get rid of unwanted plastic is to burn it which is also the worst for the environment - the next cheapest is to bury it which is not nearly as bad for the environment - the best for the environment is to reuse it, but that is the most expensive method. Never expect others to spend their monies to help your problems.
As if England is coping with its own waste, we haven't had recycle collection since lockdown not to mention the shortage of recycling bins for those living in block of flats
What Turkey does with it is up to Turkey, they wanted it they've got it. If you were that bothered you should have brought it back. Non story, we are doing something for recycling its the recipient that isn't doing their part.
I've felt myself to explain what is going? Turkish government gives so much financal support for recycling companies. It gives free land (20 cent rent fee for 20-49 years) %25 of investment payback, tax cut etc. So number of recycling companies sky rocketed (2 223 in 2019) But in Turkey waste seperation is not common enough. Lots of them are not transfered to factories, localy handled. So amounth of domestic collection wasn't sufficent and there was a demand. They pressured to government to let them take other countries waste. Government lifted the restriction. But 2018 while economy was slowing down, importing waste was increased. Companies still importing plastic (for getting paid by countries) but they are not recycling all of them because demand is much much lower compare to total amounth of plastic. So result is in the video .
Every country should deal with their own waste.
no more a country possible g20 united..africa should be dumping ground
@Benji Winger - Africa is the digging ground, dumping also depends on which big pocket got to pay and which big pocket got paid, a job well done that always ends there obviously and everyone else has just been well and truely _done,_ and whoever gets done you can guarantee pays, twice and then gets a load of trash dumped on them just to complete the divide between elite power, wealth and normal people.

Money. That’s what it all comes down to. The British government can get rid of our recyclable waste quickly, cheaply and look good doing so whilst the Turkish government pretends to recycle it and gets quick, easy money.
The Dastardly Penguin Spot on. 👌
Apparently, Turkey was really good at waste management, but now government doesn't really wanna spend money on it. Everything's fucked up since Erdogan became president...
@@lastc0de440 Also low quality plastic waste from UK
ruclips.net/video/Fi_x090LGO8/видео.html world is not what people think
In the old days (before plastic bags became so commonplace), people were more resourceful and less wasteful. Cardboard boxes were often reused to put your groceries in, fish was wrapped in newspaper and bags were often made of straw or paper.
Whenever I go food shopping, I take a cardboard box off the shelves to put my shopping in. I will then repurpose some of the boxes to be used as parcels.
@@bessiehillum6498 It seemed necessary at the time.
That’s awful, Britain and Turkey should do something and work together immediately to save environment. Solution is very easy to build more cleaner recycling ♻️ also to ended middle man that created this problem and create oversight Agency .
politicians really need to take the issue seriously now
At times I think that this pandemic deserves to kill off humans. We are just so destructive to the environment from greed and over consumption.
They burn the bodies, too. Problem is that it turns into a fomite crystal which more readily bonds with alveoli in the lungs. So, another disposal method which, in reality, is a vector for transmission.
Why, why, why why?
Can't Britain recycle them on Their own?
Wow this is genious, can our goverment just hire you allready, you clearly seem to hae better ideas than the people im charge 👏👏
But on a real tho, i ask the same question to
Good work Britain. You trusted us Turks who cannot even recycle 1% of its own waste because we do not even want to do so.
They should have made a plastic road
Terrible!!!!
This is a shame for my country. Goverment has been not good at managing the country lately. But if BBC is honest about this news why don't you ask Erdogan (President of Turkey) why this is happening?
It's surely a matter of time before every country has to deal with their own waste on shore. This is a joke, you can't pay to make this go away.
Actually you can pay to make this go away they just don’t want to
First, why can't the uK government properly educate the public, from kindergarten education to TV commercials, what to recycle and how to differentiate them?
The earth is fucked. We are fucked.
Turkey should stop this for safe environment
Things were different in the 70s people drank out of glass bottles
Another example of hyper consumption and waste in capitalism. It is unsustainable and will collapse under its own contradictions. There cannot be infinite growth in a world of finite resources.
We will grow until there is no more, then all shall die.
in the same way, truthfully, they lie to you about the war of Russia and Ukraine...
İnanamıyorum.
We are doomed
No surprise.
@@RedHeadForester Yep and look who's the cause
Could anyone spot that none of the plastic burnt in lands was recyclable? It is obvious people did not carefully separate the plastics in the first place. Later in the video, plastic bottles were already joined in the recycling process. I think we better think about buying products in plastic less.
AMERICAN AND WESTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES YOU PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE
Recycling trash dosent mean pretending..or selling it to others..as a commodity...to chuck somewhere else.
Reduce reuse...and charge people if we have too to keep products as paper...
Who would have imagined the whole "recycling" nonsense was a scam??
UK people going on holiday to Turkey? 😅 drop off your recycling
Ortadogu ve Türkiye dünyanın kanalizasyon deposu
Dont forget Brazilian aircraft carrier is coming to Turkey forrecycling . This ship has 800 metric tones asbestos .
The rubbish shown is mainly packaging. This is put in general waste and is not recycled. Only plastic bottles or similar are re-cycled.
Because we never learned anything from climate change
You serious? Ain't burning plastic dangerous to our health? Your really eating food cooked food cooked over burned plastic? I wouldn't.
@@memebump7612 Burned on a hot fire in a woodburner. Burned totally seperate from the food. No contamination.
I burn loads of my rubbish as the poxy council only take 4 bags a month , bought an incinerator best thing ever saves trips to the dump
What the hell has that got to do with British families? It’s up to those government officials to do their job
Zeynep Erdim, is that you?
Also in Australia, the rubbishes which should be recycled are sent to remote NSW to burn
Nice to see the BBC doing journalism instead of propaganda, keep it up guys good stuff 👍🏻
Reason is probably sending those to Turkey is way more cheaper. Bcs in these days prodducing plastic from oil cheaper then recycling since oil prices is way lower than before.
The Philippines had this issue before..
Why can't we just send it to Wales?
Or Birmingham?
@@LS-hl1yi also a good option 😂
Wales is beautiful, send it to Milton Keynes.
They used to send them to China, then Maylasia and now Turkey.
I love turkey
Recycling is a lose lose proposition - the cheapest way to get rid of unwanted plastic is to burn it which is also the worst for the environment - the next cheapest is to bury it which is not nearly as bad for the environment - the best for the environment is to reuse it, but that is the most expensive method. Never expect others to spend their monies to help your problems.
Dumped..... or purchased?
As if England is coping with its own waste, we haven't had recycle collection since lockdown not to mention the shortage of recycling bins for those living in block of flats
It isn't beautiful this thing and now, because, the world it's insane? Stop this disaster first we are all in perils
What Turkey does with it is up to Turkey, they wanted it they've got it. If you were that bothered you should have brought it back. Non story, we are doing something for recycling its the recipient that isn't doing their part.
If it’s not recycle now, why not contain it in big bails .
MUST ban single use plastics!
