- NOFX HATED Women (& Vegetarians): Liberal Animation Retrospective (1988/1991)
Back when NOFX were red pilled edge lords
Liberal Animation is the debut album by the American punk rock band NOFX. It was originally released in 1988 through Wassail Records, which was Fat Mike's label before Fat Wreck Chords. Brett Gurewitz produced the record and even offered to release it on his label, Epitaph Records.
NOFX is an American punk rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1983. Vocalist/bassist Fat Mike, guitarist Eric Melvin, and drummer Erik Sandin are the original founding and longest-serving members
Epitaph Records is an American independent record label owned by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, most acts signed to the label were punk and pop punk, while many post-hardcore and emo bands signed to the label as well.

The punkest thing a band could do would be to release a red pilled record. Why? Because it’s not safe and it would piss off a lot of people. And that is punk.
Liberal Animation, Out Come the Wolves, and Walk Among Us were the first cds I ever bought as a young kid. I pretty much chise them because of the artwork. I was rockin out to Liberal Animation for a while without ever hearing anything else (they just released Punk n Drublic) Piece and Shut Up Already were my first favorite nofx songs lol. Haven't listened to the album since the mid 90s.
Bark like a dog was gonna be and out come the Chihuahuas true story
I got crabs I got crabs
Most everything NOFX does is a joke and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I LOVE the album artwork, I have a t shirt and face mask of it and wear it all the time as a chef.
NOFX is still my favorite Punk band of all time.
Best album ever...punk af!!
Liberal Animation is my favorite Nofx LP. Oh, and NOFX's first 7"s were on Mystic Records. Also the cover your showing here wasn't the first cover for the album, it's the one they used when they re-released it on Epitaph. The first release had red & black art that was difficult to make out.
This sarcasm went right over your head. These videos went from decent to just bullshit. Went from at least pulling out some facts to just going to straight to reading your opinion on lyrics and being way off base. Hope it gets better. Good luck
Jesus Crist dude settle down. Sometimes people disagree with you
@@toddpacker4683I'm settled pack man. These aren't lyrics meant to be interpreted however each individual listener hears them. This isn't Pink Floyd. We aren't talking about Wonderwall. It's Nofx. Can't get more cut and dry than that.
I couldn’t agree more. S&m airlines is the first proto Nofx album. Liberal animation sounds like RKL with lyrics by Ted Nugent
Except RKL was talented. This record is just terrible both musically and lyrically.
I can’t believe this is new content… I just re evaluated / re contextualizado a NOFX record that came out when I was two and GG Alin… in the last half hour.. killer stuff
(great job w the GG vid, dude is not a hero)
Allin not Alin
Totally agree. These dumb songs really bolster punks image of ignorance. I like real punk acts like the Damned, Dead Kennedys, Minutemen, OFF!, Poison Girls, CRASS...
The nofx song 180° is about how mike changed his opinions (he became a vegetarian for many years after talking to properghadi)
They were teenagers (who have predominantly been a comedy punk band 90% of there carrer) the songs aren't serious.
They were kids who had fun
And as another person said about on the rag being about a bitchy girlfriend and how it's not his fault she's on her TOM
Dude! You hit over 5k subs! Congratulations 🍾
thanks dude!
It's one of their best albums.
I think the Ribbed record was their finest effort, at least from a playing standpoint.
@@donnix1192 an absolute masterpiece
@@neilbottles2597 It’s crazy because albums like liberal animation and Ribbed were both recorded on Pre-SMASH Epitaph. So it was still a dime a dozen independent punk rock record label before that insane cash flow and exposure. Yet the recording quality is incredible, I think Brett Gurewitz produced it, I have no idea how they recorded the drums but they sound amazingly concise at really fast tempos, the blistering fills. I don’t know if you agree but I really liked Steve Kidwiler on guitar, really good player.
@@donnix1192 😁😁😁😆😆
Yikes
People still defend this album for some reason. Even Mike says it's a tough listen. It's pretty much garbage except for Beer Bong. S&M Airlines is marginally better. I'd say Ribbed was their first "good" album.
Fun fact: Mike didn't even try cocaine until he was in his 30s, so there's no way they were "high as crap" in the studio. Drugs are not to blame for this.
You probably didn’t grow up in San Francisco in the 80s-90s and don’t know anyone from there? Your perspective of society in this country also appears limited to post circa 2000
So yesterday was the double album drop and my codefendants/ get dead split showed up in the mail same day!
Liberal animation is in my Opinion the best first album ever it as this old school HC punk rock elements it reminds me of rkl and DI and other 80s punk album. I like the album 🎵🎶🔥
Makes me wonder what 21yo Fat Mike would think of 55yo Fat Mike in a slip dress. However this was my first NOFX album my mom bought me when i was 14 and I'll never forget her comment as we played it in her car on the way home from the record store, "Have you ever heard of U2, you should really check them out" Bahahaha. I listen to NOFX to this day, and I don't think poor Mom has ever understood it.
Lol
haha, nice take. This was maybe the second album I bought just after Give Me Convenience by DK. I just broke up with my first real GF and loved on the rag, first song I learnt to play really sloppy. I still love this record. And the solos were awesome, can't beat bad punk solos. It's actually in my top 3 nofx albums: I heard they suck live, Liberal Animation and So Long.
That album is awsome
Indeed, the countertimes from Smelly, the thrash solos, it was obnoxious fast as shit technical hardcore, the only band that did this right a bit later one was F.Y.P, all of their vinyl releases that found their way on Incomplete Crap, Vol.1 and 2 and the Dance My Dunce album in particular (the latter mixed and produced by Chris Hannah). I was listening to this shit when I was 13, so I couldn't tolerate it when bands like say Yellowcard were said to be punk and bands that had great albums started to copy Greenday or be a meaningless NOFX clone in the 90's (only NOFX did NOFX right in the 90's, pretty much the case until Stoke Extinguisher EP, their last great release).
I guess this record doesn't translate well with the generation without a scene. I don't know, these kids are long winded as hell but google did it or something. This record was a legend before the internet. I got it at a record store in person. This is as far as I have expressed my opinion on said record so far.
I believe you are correct. As NOFX is such an old band, most of their fans have not even been alive their entire run.. I remember hearing about NOFX album drops from the local record store, and eventually a Fat Wreckchords mailing list. The culture of late-80’s and 90’s as far as music in general, but punk rock in particular was very different. In context this album was mean’t to be offensive and punk rock was edgy music.
And that's why we used to love them so much
Congrats on over 4K subs! Woohooo 🎉 you deserve a million more. Your channel is so epic.
I liked , commented *A LOT* and subscribed and no, I’m not a bot!!! Just a big fan
Why do you comment on these videos so much ? makes you seem like a fake account, maybe you are ... it's just weird that you said that.
@@punkratsxxx do I smell a conspiracy brewing? 😘
Lol I really enjoyed this album in middleschool. I still think their music videos from that era with the green screen are funny too.
I’m surprised your parents let you listen to it. Very Inappropriate for a middle schooler
I think the "Shut Up Already" video was directed by the same guy who did Pirates of the Caribbean.
@@colina1330 Makes sense, it's really impressive. I would argue surpasses Pirates of the Carribean
@@CrisHaasbro top-notch material, indeed. Sad to see a career go so far downhill.
Love the title of this one ☝🏼
great record 🤗
Tottally agreed with you! Just bringing one point here: on that record they were trying to emulate RKL. That's why there's a bunch of nonsense guitar solos around!
On The Rag is nothing that plenty of female punk bands wouldn't say anyway, the lunachicks did exactly the same thing, twice !
Fat Mike cut out meat less than a decade later. In retrospect, I'm vegan, but I love listening to this album while not taking it serious. It's a young NOFX being ridiculous. This is the album version of laughing at the class clown in high school.
and that Dead Milkmen shirt on the cover XD
He wrongly thought meat made him fat it does if it's deep fried but otherwise it's all good
Liberal Animation is a badass album. My favorite NOFX album is White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean.
Did you not read Hepatitis Bathtub the NOFX story?
Vegetaaaaaarian....
Tightttt
I bought this CD in 1997 from a discount bin for $2. I think that was the right price, I love it. I plan on getting the cover as a tattoo (I love the irony and I am also Vegan now haha)
Must be nerve wracking being among straight edges in the punk scene back in the days
Nerve WRACKING
It's the straight in straight edge that makes me wanna drink a beer and be a....
Ok so this is OFF TOPIC BUT …… do you know what’s up with the new blink 182 album!? Where is it??? What’s going on. Maybe can do a vid on how lame that is
Lol I love how we flex about being old like “i had this on tape I’m a true punk rocker” and then go to Whole Foods to feed the capitalist system pretending like there’s still a scene😂😂😂
my favourite nofx album😀
The album cover was brilliant sarcastic irony. The first song Shut Up Already rips musically and the lyrics are the equivalent of modern day memes. Just about the only NOFX album I can listen to it and it’s entirety without turning it off… maybe Drublic too? Ok yeah.
you are judging 1988 lyrics with a 2022 perspective. yeah he's bitching about rich vegetarian snobs of that time. so what.
I don't agree about the music arrangement comments. They are not boring, and the solo guitar is cool. The led zeppelin ending doesn't sound random, I love it. Overall is a great album. The lyrics are dumb, but at that age it is ok 😂
godamn right, cause as far as I know, Clams have feelings to
That record was punk, I think. I used to have all their records. Btw, alienation is punk rock. Not a fan of their new stuff.
The hypocrisy is a fucking 10!
This is the 2nd best after ribbed.
Most of the vegetarian punks I've met opt to wear denim jackets, flight jackets etc...I'm not saying no vegetarian punks have worn or do wear leather, but I don't think it's a common as Mike wants to portray.
I always forget this records exists. Same for heavy petting zoo.
I think it's funny
It’s extremely inappropriate
yeah , he had a change 180°
but dude it is better to eat meat than not why be woke..... {and yes im from the uk and woke is not just party political bs over here}
Woke doesn't have anything to do with vegetarians, woke is in reference to politics and brokenness of the system and recognizing the brokenness.
??? What does being vegetarian have to do with being “woke”
@@toddpacker4683 lots, but agreed its not be all end all
Fat Mike is a vegetarian now.
And he also wears women's clothing. Eat some meat, soyboy.
2 things you have to keep in mind while talking about this record:
1.) Better don't complain about bad arrangements when discussing the first record of teenage booze heads.
2.) If you have to struggle with offensive lyrics, maybe you should stay away from punk rock from the late 80s/early 90s.
wow great points. thank you. you're very smart and kind. now I have the knowledge to truly change and become a good person with the correct takes on music. you are very generous with your teachings. can we arrange a call to go over future marketing strategies?
@@danframpt0n you're welcome
you must be new to punk.
You should look up the punk front this kind of shit wasn't unusual in the 80s
LOL I was an idiot when I was young and thort many different things. You grow, you learn and you change. The end.
I love warm milk foot baths. Really hydrating. 🤮
The title tells you how tongue in cheak it is, no need to dive

Punk Rock
Yeah, I cannot believe the song “on the rag” exists. That wouldn’t pass now.
Wow so woke lol
Really though, what's wrong with it?
I think I heard on the rag on back from Samoa
Lollll
Men could be on the rag as well.
The offensive and stupid shit is the good part of this album, criticism of that matter of it defeats the whole point of it but as for quality Sloppy English is kind of a banger, beer bong is a classic I guess, the rest is a pretty tough listen.. almost rather listen to maximum rocknroll tbh if wanted to listen to their early stuff, But that's just like my opinion.
Mike was pretty based. Steak is delicious and leather seats are comfy. Shut Up Already is still a BANGER
Mike has not, nor will he ever be based.
@@gordonhuskin7337 nah I'm thinking BASED
@Hot Stanky Garbage you don't know what based means then. Shilling for neoliberalism and Hillary Clinton and the Democrat party is NOT based. A fat man wearing a dress is not based
@@gordonhuskin7337 sounds pretty BASED to me. BASED and 50 year old punk pilled
@Hot Stanky Garbage he is literally cringe and blue pilled
Fat mikes positionality was very problematic
What's wrong with on the rag? It's just a song about how women can be complete monsters during their period, everyone has experienced this. I don't get why you shouldn't make a song about that? What's so "incel" about that?
Warm milk for a sweaty foot bath. That's pretty gross, gotta hand it to you
I WANNA BE YOUR BABY BRINGIN ME DOWN!
I don't like Fat Mike but let's be real. He doesn't hate women. Preeeetty sure he identifies as one.
Woah woah woah. That's not red pilled. Pump the brakes, homey.
I really do like NOFX's music, but as a person, Fat Mike seems like a egotistical punk rock gatekepper. The rest of the guys seem cool and i can personally relate to Smelly's personal demons, but i am NOT a fan of Fat Mike. I still say Punk in Drublic is in the top 10 punk albums.
Well that was punk and hard core the 70s 80s and 90s.. imagine a time when you can do and say what was on your mind freely ?
It's crazy how much it has changed. Nothing makes me shake my head more than seeing people at punk/harcore shows with their masks on in 2022 virtue signaling for their homies. Even funnier when its half off their face. punk and hardcore have gone full lib. Punk went from wanting no government control to full socialism in a decade.
Currently no I can't imagine a time LOL
Good ol dayz
You can still say what you want who’s gonna stop you? The internet? Celebrities are the only ones who actually get cancelled. I’m not sure why people lament about not being able to say hateful stuff but whatever
@@rascaltuff at one time in the early 90s being straight Edge was considered hateful and militant...in my high school being punk was considered dangerous and teachers would make me turn my shirts inside out in order not to be offensive...get my point ?

Dude you can't take stuff written when Mike was 18 out of context ahahahahah...anyway, it's irony. Punk rock was serious in the 80s. Many modern sissies wouldn't have never survived the scene back then, trust me. Broken bones were the norm at shows. And, believe it or not, that was the fun. Once puritans came in (flower fascists, as I call 'em) all the danger and excitement went out. Edit: Anyway, Liberal Animation sucked ass.
Not a very clever album.
Your commentary on this album is absolutely ridiculous, so UN PUNK I'm blown away at almost ever statement. This album is gold. Talking about "shitty" solos and arrangements haha NEEERRRDD!! unfollowed. Not punk at all.
🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
No, there is a general radness that runs through this album, the cover art included. You gotta exercise suspended disbelief, I guess, and be charmed by his ignorant sass talk (because you know he pays for his bad ideas with regret later!) C'mon, dude. Get to that higher level of punk aesthetics.
Hahah I could never understand why people care so much what other people eat… unless it’s humans and you’re talking about Jeffery Dahmer, then sure, call out that but maybe zip it otherwise. Who cares.
lol agreed
Obviously they think it’s wrong to kill animals
Hahah vegetarians are good for the planet! I just wish it was less preachy. Q:“How do you know someone’s vegetarian?” A:”they’ll tell you”
It's not good for the planet at all actually! Veganism and vegetarianism are HUGE carbon footprints. They've restricted their diets and not everything can be grown everywhere at the same time. So more transportation for all the vegetables. Studies have been done and it takes 1 acre to feed an omnivore for a month and 10 acres to feed 1 vegan ... How's that good for the planet?
Hated women? That’s pretty click bait. Dumb song bitching about their girlfriend getting their period. Dumb teenager lyrics. Bad lyrics and music but saying they hates women is really stretching it.
lol
Ben weasel doesn't hate women either
