      The "real answer" is they had a violence to body count ratio back in the 80s. They could have all the shooting, explosions, and whatnot as long as no one got killed. Kinda like why Airwolf only really didn't have much "action" if they had a lot of planes/choppers get shot down.

    The Mini-14 is a great little, rugged rifle that I will always go to. The best reason I see for owning and carrying a Mini-14 is that it doesn't draw as many unwanted eyes. I was going to leave a comment that would’ve said exactly what Darral Lipke’s comment does…more or less. I live North of you, in Canada. I’ve left a comment saying how I always wanted one, but they’re now Prohibited in my Country. I’m not a fan of the ridiculous changes to the firearms rules and regulations that the current Canadian Prime Minister has made over the last 2 years. The only gun problem that our country has is that the people who have licenses to own and possess firearms are also the people who get targeted by the government’s change to Firearms rules. They should invest in the police "anti-gang" units to get illegal guns off the streets and out of the hands of the real criminals. Unfortunately, the government is ignorant and run by fools who’s laws only affect licensed owners.

    I found a great leather sling off the Etsy site from a guy out in Texas. The thing with the original Mini-14 swivel sling connector on the front is that it has a narrower gap than the one on the stock. You might need to bend it open a little bit with a screwdriver to get leather type of sling to fit. Still searching for a scope, probably going with a Leupold. Yes these are challenging times and there are many reasons to have a firearm but you should be incredibly responsible with locking it, keeping it in a gun safe, learning how to shoot it properly, cleaning it, and teaching your children to respect all weapons. It’s also important to control one’s anger, seek non-lethal deterrents, avoid conflicts in the first place, have situational awareness at all times. If you treat others with respect and aren’t a jerk to others then you’re less likely going to need a gun, however as Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Speak softly but carry a very big stick” is a sound approach for being defensive. In this case that stick is a semi-automatic rifle. Keep in mind that it’s still no match against our well trained military and law enforcement, they will triangulate upon a shooter like it’s nobody’s business. Btw it saddens my heart today to hear what happened in New York. There is no place for racism in our country, African Americans are good people and they have just as much rights to be free as anyone else. Let’s stop the hate, God made us all.

    OG, I and my three brothers were all career LEO or military. My youngest brother was a Texas Highway Patrolman. One day he was cruising along and the radio broadcast that a bank robber in a described vehicle was headed south on a particular highway. My brother was headed north on the same road and about that time the described vehicle traveling fast passed him, he turned on the vehicle and with lights and siren commenced a one car, one officer, pursuit at high speed. That went on until the road took a 90-degree turn to the west. The robber couldn't make the turn and drove straight ahead into a gravel pit. My brother blocked the exit, grabbed his issue Mini 14, and as the robber turned around and headed towards him, opened up on the vehicle. He fired the whole magazine at the vehicle, breaking every window in the robber car and not hitting the crook once. He said the crook was very frightened and unhurt except his pants were soiled and he smelled like crap.
    I think the state issued weapon was fixed where it would fire several rounds every time the trigger was pulled. That mod is easily done if you know how and don't mind going to prison.

      Aimed semiauto fire is vastly superior to full auto or burst control in terms of accuracy. Full auto is useful for grazing fires or suppressive fires, but aimed single fire is what is needed for actually hitting an intended target. That, and you don't turn a 30 round mag into a ten round mag because your rifle is spitting out 3 rounds every time to squeeze the trigger. Or dump an entire magazine in 5 seconds because you spray the general direction of the threat in full auto.

    Ejection problems are not uncommon when running an optic on a new M14/Mini14. Spent casings can hit the bottom of the scope or mount, then get stuck between the charging handle and receiver. At 19:24 you can see exactly what I'm describing.

      I had my LGS' smith mount my 1-6x LPVO with slightly taller rings (can't recall the brand), no rail across the ejection port. I also switched to an adjustable gas block, since these rifles are so overgassed from the factory (the dent in the case from hitting the back of the port did make it easy to identify my brass, though). Haven't seen a stovepipe since I made those changes, but bugs me that I had to spend even more money on it, putting it into the price range of higher-end rifles using the same cartridge. But, it gives me the full Fudd hunting rifle look I wanted (I live in CA, don't want to scare the neighbors if they see me cleaning it in my garage).

    • @thoreau5914
      @thoreau5914 2 года назад +5

      @@dlpeters0n Depends on the individual rifle I think. My 584 series, without a scope on it, functioned fine most of the time out of the box, but was denting the side of every brass casing when ejecting them. I put a pic rail on it and mounted a Primary Arms scope. That's when I started getting failure to feed or failure to eject almost every shot. It really confused me because very often I would manually load the first round per usual, then it shoot, try to pull the trigger again and get nothing. When I would try to open the bolt it wouldn't budge. I would have to tap the charging handle on a board or something to get the bolt open. When it would get stuck like that there would always be the spent casing in the chamber and the bolt and extractor could not pull it out unless I let the gun set for a while. I finally realized that it would shoot a round, the casing would rebound back into the chamber and either jam or go all the way back into the chamber and the bolt would close. The casing, being very hot after firing, would immediately expand inside the chamber and become too large for the chamber, therefore becoming stuck. If I let the rifle sit for a few minutes while I scratched my head in confusion, the casing would cool, then shrink in size and I could extract it normally with the bolt. This was with brass casings. Steel casings, since they expand little, if at all, didn't get stuck in the chamber. Also, it was beating the hell out my windage turret with the ejected casings (if they managed to eject). Usually the brass would not fully eject after caroming off the scope turret, jamming the gun. I figured if I mounted the scope higher I wouldn't have the problem so I replaced the Pic rail with Ruger rings and I still had the same result. It was obvious that the gun was way, way over gassed, so I put an adjustable gas block on it and that 100% cured the problem. No more dented brass, no more beat up scope, no failures whatsoever. Having the gas dialed down should take some stress off the action too, possibly making parts wear less and last longer. Now ejected brass doesn't fly farther than the bullet. They just land in a nice consistent pile not too far away. Sorry for the verbose comment, but I wanted to relay my experience in case someone else is having the same experience.

    I inherited my father's 181 series mini 14 when I was in college. It's certainly not as accurate as my other rifles, but I love it. I love the look of the full wood furniture, including the upper handguard, from before they added the shield around the op-rod. I love the slim barrel without any muzzle device on it, because it's so much fun to see giant fireballs with every trigger pull. I posted a vid on mine several months back after getting some slow motion footage of it at my local range and had the most fun in the rifle lanes I've had all year. Nearly half a century old and running great on steel case garbage ammo up to match grade 5.56. Always love to see people enjoying a mini, it's a dearly sentimental workhorse to me. Some guns are great for remembering better days, while still being perfectly adequate tools.
    I would keep that target model, even though it'll only eat .223; I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild! I always run iron sights on mine because the rail section would always block ejecting cases, causing occasional stove pipes. Not sure if that could be what's causing your stoppages, but may be worth seeing if it happens without the rail + optic attached. Stay safe out there, OG!

    • @Karl_Kampfwagen
      @Karl_Kampfwagen 2 года назад +6

      I bought the Target Stainless model, not realizing it is a ".223 ONLY" rifle chambering. Many folks have had it cut with a .223 Wylde ream, and said it properly digests 5.56mm NATO rounds after that. I love the full stainless model I have... Every single part is made from the same hardened, forged stainless. Probably the best deal ever for a rifle upgrade, compared to the Blued and Nickel-plated models.
      They call it "The MOA Mini," and it is THAT accurate; using the Barrel Harmonic Dampener, I've significantly reduced the barrel "whip" effect, which really opened my eyes to what forces and effects play out during a firing cycle.
      I'd argue that you don't notice them as much with cheaper rifles, since the gun itself is much less consistent in how it acts and reacts to everything.

One that needs tools, or one that can be opened and reassembled by hand alone? 🧐 Is it better to spray Carbon onto the bolt-face, or would you rather have the operating rod venting the exhaust gas to a shrouded handguard? 😏 Seems harder to cook off rounds in the chamber, when you don't have your hot exhaust gas making a return trip to shove the BCG back.

    I really liked this mini-14 episode. I was also taken in by the idea of the mini-14 target version. If you used the rifle for any extended time the harmonic balance weight would start to work loose when the barrel gets hot. What I did was sent the rifle out to Accuracy Systems, out of Colorado, where they were able to replace the barrel with a Wylde bull barrel, new gas block that is designed for the barrel, the barrel is not machined down to fit the standard gas block. They also rework the spring and bed the action. Once you break in the barrel the gun will shoot sub MOA all day long. Definitely worth the money. The best thing you can do to a Ruger target mini-14.

The amount of rounds fired compared to the rounds striking their intended targets, had to be in the 300 -1 range, lmao. The sound of mini-wars around small rural areas were an 80's thing. Hearing 3000 rounds of full auto gunfire and seeing a Massey Ferguson tractor from the 1930's bust through the side of a barn with armor plating and a chicken wire windshield, sounding like a monster truck and equipped with a flame thrower made out of the headlight, was always expected near the local Farmers Market. Hell, it was just another day living the country life! The thing that I missed the most was how every barn across the U. S. was guaranteed to have stick welders, oxy/acetylene torches, large sheets of steel plate, and shitloads of fasteners and wrenches. Biden stopped all that because he knew, that when people had nowhere left to turn, and justice was no longer being served, and if we could find them... We could hire,... The A-Team! Having said that I love my Mini 14 too, so I highly recommend getting both :) My Mini 14 went up appreciably in my estimation against the Mini 30 when I fitted a reduced gas bushing the 14 along with the higher pressure 5.56/223 round was, in my rifle at least, outrageously over gassed which made it seem as if it recoiled more than my 30 which is not possible. With reduced gassing it's a different rifle all together, much less mechanical noise and soft shooting like my Colt AR A2 and improved the accuracy as well.

    I think the poor accuracy label attached to the older models of this rifle is mostly urban legend that keeps getting repeated. I've seen the high speed videos of barrel flex, but most older high powered hunting rifles behave similarly, and the flex happens after the bullet has left the barrel.

    The way I operate my Mini-14 is similar to how I operate a lever action rifle. My left hand presses the butt stock into my shoulder, and the right hand does all of the control functions as I maintain sight picture: trigger, safety, bolt cycling, and mag release. If you use the front of your right index finger to press forward on the release, the mag will gravity drop free. If instead you use the thumb method, you must rip the mag out with resistance, as described in the manual. Exceptions to this are canting the rifle so you can see the mag port when inserting a mag, but this is also done when loading a lever action side port. The other exception being using the left thumb to press the bolt hold back button, but this is usually done in non-firing gun cleaning situations.

    With the Mini, you're better off NOT using a rail adapter like that. Because it sits so low over the ejection port, it interferes with ejection, and can bounce brass back into the ejection port and cause FTE malfunctions. Ruger style rings, that mound directly to the receiver, will give you more clearance between the ejection port and scope, so that the brass has more room to clear.

    • @thegeth4293

      How could you mount an aimpoint on a mini14 without using a scout rail?

    • @fluzwup
      @fluzwup 2 года назад

      @@thegeth4293 You can get the Ruger style rings, that mount directly to the receiver on Ranch style rifles (which is all of them since 2005), in low, medium and high heights, for 1" and 30mm tube scopes. You do need a scope that can mount rings that span 4", end to end. It looks like the Aimpoint 9000 series would work--the L certainly, and maybe the C (I'd check with them on the mounting span). Ultradot also makes some tube sights. If you want to mount a dot sight with an integral Picatinny mount, then the style of mount that replaces the bolt hold-open cover plate puts the rail a bit higher. This leaves more room for ejection, as well as allowing the use of iron sights while the scope and mount are in place. B-Square makes one (and has since the '80s), and GG&G makes another.

    • @fluzwup
      @fluzwup 2 года назад

      @@thegeth4293 The Mini-14 is a direct descendant of the M-1 Garand design. Mounting a scope centered over the receiver of the Garand is clearly futile, as it would prevent loading of the clips; this is a common issue with almost all clip (as opposed to magazine) fed designs, and is part of the reason that forward mounted "scout" scopes exist (the other being things like top eject lever action rifles). The original Mini-14 used a Garand type spring-loaded ejector, and tossed the cases up and a bit to the right, so you had to leave plenty of room for ejection with a receiver mounted scope. The Mini-14 Ranch (all 580 series Minis are Ranch rifles) changed to an ejector mounted to the receiver, riding in a slot in the bolt, and it ejects at about a 30 degree angle from horizontal. This allows for a scope to sit lower, but you still have to make sure there is enough clearance to allow the brass free movement. If not, brass can bounce back into the action and cause a failure. Since the ejection velocity in the rifle depends on the bolt velocity, the Ranch rifles will eject differently with different gas port pressure. The most reliable mounting system will be a "Scout" type mount, that has zero possibility of bouncing brass back into the action; if that's not acceptable, then leaving a good inch or so of space between the bolt and the scope mounting system. I have a scope mounted over the receiver on my 181 series Ranch rifle on Ruger rings, and it gets dinged on the adjustment cover caps, so I need to shift it back a bit to fix that or I risk ejection issues.

      @@thegeth4293 I got lost in the "why" and didn't actually answer the question. Yes, it can work well, but you will want to watch for any signs of the ejecting brass hitting the mount on the way out. If the brass hits the mount, there is a risk of a failure to function. There are mounts that have a very thin bridge over the receiver, and put a mini red dot over the chamber that might be a good compromise between putting the scope over the bolt and putting it out over the forend.

    Also believe Nevada DOC issues them and I think CDCR.
    One of the older deputies I worked with in Nevada, that retired this past December carried an SKS as his patrol rifle.
    That’s what he wanted to carry and that what I qualified him on.
    He is a Vietnam Vet, was a crew chief on a gunship and he would say that when the M16s came out they were nothing by issues. But they would do a chopper run and go back days later and pull the SKSs out of mud and water and they would shoot with no issues. So ever since then, it impressed him and he got one. And when I allowed him to qualify with it, he jumped at the chance.

Through experimenting with various brands and loads, it too is quite accurate. Although I have an AR, I definitely prefer my Mini's. After using standard rifle configurations for over 50 yrs., they just feel more natural to me than the plastic and pistol grip of the ARs.

    I would keep the target version because they don't make those anymore and because they can be very accurate. I personally own one and have managed to get very good accuracy with it using my reloads. I'm a little biased in the matter because I also own 2 other mini 14 carbines. One chambered in 556 and another chambered in 300blk. They've all been extremely reliable. I've shot over 10,000 rds through mini 14 carbines and never had a single malfunction while I've had several dozen malfunctions in various AR15 carbines I also own. I don't think the mini 14 is overall " better " than the AR15, but it's certainly more reliable. If I could only grab one rifle and run out the door to never come back the mini 14 probably wouldn't be my top choice, but it would be in the top 5 choices.

    I have an older Mini 14 in a PD patrol rifle configuration (with birdcage flash hider). It's from the late 70's. It has the pencil barrel, so I put a strut on it. That helps with barrel whip when it heats up. The first 5 - 6 shots are really tight, and then it opens up a bit. I don't care, I love it. I always wanted one when i was a kid. I also have a Mini 30 and a M1A.

    Looked like a lot of the 'stove pipe' failure to eject problems were due to the scope turrets getting in the way, I'd be surprised if your LPVO survived more than 1,000 rounds, or maintained zero. Mini-14s pretty nice, but I like the click adjustments for ARs, and not fishing around with Mini-14s screwdriver adjustments...

      @@gratefulguy4130 That would be too logical. I've contacted the Ruger CEO at least once a year for a very long time with suggestions for improvements. Only crickets in return. The topnotch gunsmiths at the large gunshop, I worked after retiring, had a simple suggestion to cure the typical shotgun pattern groups.
      But the Ruger bosses seem more interested in the 10,000th micro-variation of the 10/22.
      So the Mini-14 still remains the most consistently inaccurate model of rifle I've ever owned. Had 3 from various times including the first model. Still have the GB with the LE/Military markings with matching 20rd mag but don't shoot it.
      I will have to say Ruger outdid the Mini14 with the Mini30 which blew away all the 14's in group size,,,the wrong way.

      Decades ago, probably when the Mini-14 first came out, the RamLine company came out with 30 round dual purpose magazines that supposedly could used in either an AR-15 type rifle, or a Mini-14. I bought two, but have never used them. I've never owned a Mini-14. My thinking was that I could always use them in my AR if need be, and they'd be handy to have if I somehow came across a Mini-14 in the aftermath of the apocalypse.
