Thanks for doing this, BT - you know how much I want the Archive of this album. This is another Paul album that could have been better as a double album. Add both sides of the Goodnight Tonight single, Weep for Love, Maisie, Same Time Next Year, Cage and Did We Meet Somewhere Before. I also agree with you - I don't care if lyrics are stupid, as long as they're not obscene and as long as the music is good.

    Another great video Tone.
Love BTTE, has everything, rock, ballads etc.
Intro to Winter Rose is spine tingling, then you have Old Siam Sir, can't get much different genres of music.
As I mentioned in a previous video, I love Again and Again, but the whole album is just Wings at their best.
Like us all, can't wait for box set along with LT, then one day, crem de resistance, BTTE picture vinyl.
Yes, fair enough, no chance of the latter.
Keep up the good work Tone.

What a brilliant deep dive into what is in my humble opinion McCartney's (and Wings) most underrated album full of corking tunes brilliantly played by the final incarnation of the band & it's just a pity the Japan fiasco happened as I believe this line up could have played well into the 1980s! My only gripe is the production is weak & even the remaster sounds flat but then again it was over 30 years since these tracks have been properly done as 1993 was a long long time ago & I believe a new Remaster will bring out the very best in these tracks!! Loved this video Tone as always & London Town next maybe? Thanks good man.

      @beatleytonesbeatleschannel  6 месяцев назад +1

Thanks very much Stephen for your kind words, glad you enjoyed the video. Reviewing this album, I found that the vinyl sounded really great with superb dynamics but the 1993 remaster was poor sounding so its definitely due, and deserves another remaster. I guess 1993 was the early days for CD remasters and we would hear a much improved sounding record now.

It wasn't a smooth album, it maybe lost direction a bit. The production was really crunchy and loud. It rocked quite a lot. It was really interesting in the songs it was attempting. Whole songs and sketches of songs. Pauls' vocal performances were really expressive and strong. It grew on me over the years.

    • @beatleytonesbeatleschannel

Yes I think it's grown on a lot of fans too over the years Nick. Whilst a lot of the songs dont pull up any trees for me, I agree completely with you about Paul's Vox on this album - superb throughout

Another great review Mr Beatley Tone and I agree with what say about the album. I think my sentiment may cloud my judgement as I have always liked Back to the Egg as it brings back a lot of found memories. I bought this on cassette along with London Town in Blackpool while on holiday with my younger brother (sadly no longer with us) and I use to listen to this on headphones on my portable cassette player on Blackpool beach. Maybe it is the sun and sea air that brings out the best in this album 😂😂😂😂. Thank you once again as your reviews are always entertaining and meaningful

Another brilliant video, thank you! I do think that if you mix BTTE and London Town, you can make two better albums. One folk -rock album (Deliver Your Children, After the Ball,Children Children, Winter Rose) and an Art Rock album (Broadcast, London Town, Getting Closer, Café on the Left Bank…)
I really think these albums are underrated.

Very good and fair review Tone. There are some great moments - Arrow Through Me, So Glad To See You Here and Getting Closer - some very good moments and some absolute head scratchers. It’s the only Macca album I can think of that doesn’t include at least 1 classic.
Not sure if adding Goidnight Tonight would have made it better or just more like an odd socks drawer. I do think swapping in Cage and Daytime Nighttime Suffering for Spin It On and the Broadcast (and maybe Million Miles) would have made it a more coherent listen.
Like you, I only have my original vinyl pressing and the ‘93 CD, so hopefully MPL subscribe to your channel and got the message about the archive edition 🤞🏾

    • @beatleytonesbeatleschannel

Yes its on odd bag Jason. I think that adding Goodnight Tonight and Daytime Suffering would probably have made it a better album but totally get what you're saying about the odd sock drawer. I guess just because they are better songs than some of the songs that made the album, it doesnt necessarily make it a more coherent album. Its all about the flow

  • @stationminute

Totally agree with your take here, Tone. In retrospect, the album is quite enjoyable, with a more than a few classic tracks on it, but at the time it really did sound hopelessly out of step with the current music trends. When it came out, I listened to my brother's copy once (on 8-track!), decided it was boring, and didn't revisit the album again for another 30 years. Its definitely due for a reissue, Archive Collection or otherwise, and preferably well before the 50th anniversary in 2029.

I never knew about the keyboard riff on Old Siam Sir dating back to a Linda song or Cage being titled from the chord structure. Interesting.
In 1979 I was 16 and a full fledged Beatlemaniac for a few years at that point. I think I was given London Town as a gift around the time of its release so Back To The Egg was the second Wings album I got at the time of release. I was completely oblivious to the UK and US punk scene. But I really enjoyed Back To The Egg even though I could hardly make out or understand what Paul was singing on Getting Closer and Old Siam Sir. But it rocked. I mean on Old Siam Sir he starts out each verse on a high B note. Even the live version kicks ass. His voice was phenomenal then. Possibly at its peak. And while all previous Wings members were fine musicians, I don’t think they could have given some of those songs the bite needed as well as Laurence and Steve did. Considering how well Paul regards Daytime Nighttime Suffering , it’s surprising it was relegated to a B side. Imagine taking out three of the weaker tunes and adding that, Goodnight Tonight and Cage. As it stands I still really enjoy the album for what it is. But like you it would probably come near the bottom of my Wings albums ranking beating out Wild Life.

    • @beatleytonesbeatleschannel
      @beatleytonesbeatleschannel  6 месяцев назад +1

Glad my research gave you got some new info out of this video Michael . It really is a curious thing about Daytime Nighttime Suffering as like you say Paul does rate it and it would have fitted very well on this album rather than being consigned to b side anonymity . I also agree that Paul's voice was at an absolute peak on this album

Another great video Tone! As with all Paul’s albums it’s a mixed bag of eggs- but none of them rotten! I’d give Getting Closer, Old Siam Sir and Arrow Through Me all 10/10. The Broadcast is another example of ‘McCartney Goes Too Far’ which has its place in his experimental work, which would eventually lead into The Fireman. As always fingers crossed for the Archive Edition 🤞All the best, Paul.

Fantastic Tone. I'm a big fan of 'Back to the egg' and like you i think it really picks from 'Old siam sir' onwards. Over the years favourites change but right now i love the two, two part songs in particular - they are fantastic, Paul's vocals are so great... 'Arrow through me' and 'Old siam sir' score high too....'Rockestra theme', 'To you' and 'so glad to see you here' rock - i love them alot! Its a very good album i rank it behind 'Band on the run' and 'London town' only in the Wings catalogue. I'd score 6 average 7 good 8 very good 9 brilliant 10 exceptional - truly magnificent. I'd score 'Back to the egg' 8. Very good. Great (final) band.....shame they didn't do another album together. Look forward to Sunday 18th Feb - Yoko's birthday right?

Refreshing is a good way of describing this album or at least some of it. #8 is high praise indeed - it would be lower than that for me. The concert for Kampuchea was definitely filmed in its entirety as we had a highlights show on TV from it in the early 80s so i guess they must have filmed the whole thing to work out what the highlights were. i expect the bits that were in the highlight show are findable on YT

OMG! I'm exhausted from watching your unbridled enthusiasm 😄What a fair, accurate and entertaining review. As I've said in the past, this is my #2 Macca album behind Venus And Mars. Both of those albums have held their respective spots since they were released. Is this album perfect? No. Do I love the overall vibe? Yes!
You totally hit on something that I've never been able to properly articulate: I liked this lineup, due to their ability to disappear into the wallpaper. Both Juber and Holley are very talented and contribute some more than competent musicianship, but didn't have that star quality. Never ever been a fan of Denny, which I know is no longer acceptable to say, so I'll just say no more. I've always been good at listen to the "offending" lyrics phonetically, and not get too hung up on the actual words. Getting Closer is one of my all-time favorites. I like We're Open Tonight. It makes me think of Riding To Jaipur, in the sense that it's what that song should have been, and not go on for almost 5 minutes. The 2 Rockestra tracks, To You, Spin It On, Old Siam Sir all still blow me away. Arrow Through Me should have been a bigger hit. And yes, there is no reason on god's green earth why The Broadcast should have been included. I like the opening and closing tracks, but I would have gladly sacrificed them for Daytime Nighttime Suffering and Goodnight Tonight.
I read a write up on this album recently which states that Paul started off adventurous, but got a little self conscious and reverted to "tried and true", which is why we got those medley's and material that didn't completely mesh. Probably for the best that Cage was left off, but boy do I love the melody to the verses. The rest of it is a little too off kilter for my tastes. Ok, that's enough of me. Good work, as usual!!!

Good and thoughtful review of this album. By 1979 most Beatles fans had moved on and guys around your age were not that interested. John wasn't recording, George had fallen off the table, and this album felt that Paul was grabbing at straws. I felt they were good straws and very solid songs. I have seen some very talented people and bands get dismissed for some really bad music, such as disco produced. I think this is when the free artist era kind of ended. Rock never really died at this point, but it did produce a lot of crap. Anyway, Back To The Egg is still a good album to listen to, compared to any of the Sex Pistols.

Many thanks for this deep dive into one of my favourite Wings albums. Where would I rank it among the other Wings albums? Well Band On The Run is my favourite with Venus And Mars a close second, so it would come third. I love this album, I remember buying it during the summer holidays and playing it over and over again. I always thought that on Arrow Through Me Denny, Linda and Paul were on backing vocals. I also love the varying styles across this album, I suppose you could call it Wings very own white album with a bit of an Abbey Rd medley at the end. Hi,
Like you I saw the Wings Wembley arena concert so I guessed that has influenced my appreciation of this album, which I love.
You mention some of the tracks have rubbish lyrics but I don't think that matters with every track as to me the voice is just another instrument adding to the overall sound. When the lyrics are good and have meaning of course that adds to to the song but its not always crucial. Just my opinion for what's it's worth.

i was 17 and i personally liked it a lot cause i thought it rocked . I agree that winter rose could have been right up there with My love or mabye i'm Amazed.... classic powerful beauty. You are dead right about music changing though and 1979 was a strange transitional year whereas old 'wings from say 1975-6 was now obselete or getting there very quickly and i think paul knew it as well. He hated rehearsals for the 79 tour even though the band was great and would have only gotten better if Japan had happened ... The USA tour was next and it still to this day breaks my heart that they couldent pull it off one last time . Considering ALL the promo the new record label put into the album ( videos, tv special ect...) it was a huge disapointment i think with lackluster sales ( which to this day i dont understand). Think you summed it all up here and this should be the final testament to the how and why's regarding the album . IN hindsight, Glasgow should have been released as a live album with the eggs debut songs performed live and that damn Japan tour SHOULD have happened as well since the US was next and i think Wings could have gone out with a blast. Funny though, paul said in 1986 that he did NOT intend Wings to disband after Egg and i think they might have been able to change with the times ( new wave) IF that damn suitcase had passed through customs.... i still wonder who ( i have my suspitions) brought that pot into the country? Paul knew very well what would happen if he got pinched and the tour was sold out with millions to be made so why risk it? Mmmmm...... this is one to explore indepth me thinks. Thanks for the video brother, loved it as usual

It's gained kudos because it's songs are hardly heard on radio & the seems to be a bit mystic because of it, new up coming Macca fans are only hearing bout it now. But if the press had asked me in '79 my reaction would be the same now BLOODY GREAT. Laurence was the best guitarist wings had all the lead guitarist were great Henry had feel jimmy had energy but Laurence had all that, i just wish that cage had a proper finished edit and was on it too. Love the tv special but who's idea was it to screen it 2 years later and i imagine it's had it's remix as tracks from this were on the 2016 compilation Pure. I don't mind nonsense lyrics at all it's more bout the sound critics have Dylan for lyrics to listen too, (of which i do too)

Paul’s first solo album Tug of War is really good and would get into my top 5 Paul Albums I think back to the Egg is a ok album but not as good as many of his others.

    Tone,
1979 was indeed a curious year - I have to put my cards on the table I have never heard "Back to the Egg", but someone did give me a fried egg 'BtE' badge which has been long lost in the mists of time. 🙂 Pehaps some additional context and a observation, some of McCartney's peers did release well regarded and critically acclaimed albums that year using the spirit on punk/new wave. Such as the Pretty Things with "Cross Talk", The Kinks "Low Budget" and the year before the Stones "Some Girls" - which I personally rate as (perhaps controversially) as their best. I dare say that did not go unnoticed by Macca and perhaps wrankled with him?

I think the main problem with BTTE is that a lot of the songs seemed unfinished and filler songs such as After the ball,Love awake ,We 're open tonight which peter out before they go anywhere. There is also no great Paul song which albums such as McCartney,Red Rose Speedway or even Broad street are lifted up by.
By far the best song is Babys request though it seems out of place on here.
Getting Closer and Old Siam sir are ok but you would never compare them with Juniors farm Jet or Call me back again.
Dennys song though is possibly his best song in the entire career of career. The Rockestria songs are dull and a wasted opportunity. and Spin it on when compared to the Jam or Costello best forgotten.

I’ve owned it ever since but even though I like it and would like a remaster or box set with tracks from the time, it’s not my favorite or among them primarily for the awful side 2 aimless meandering and for the LOUDNESS of the record which tried to be “punk” or to be respected as such because Paul could turn up the volume. Sadly it was Wings’ last album. If it weren’t for Paul’s stupidity and his drug bust we may have had one or two more Wings albums in the 80s.

They assembled a group of stellar musicians for the Rockestra Theme, then wasted all of that talent on a repetitive, throwaway riff of a song. it's ok, but it's a disappointment for a McCartney 70s album. There are a couple songs I like but there are really no standouts from this album that would put it in to the upper stratum of Macca albums. A better candidate for critical revisionism is Red Rose Speedway. Given the critical resurgence of both McCartney and Ram I am expecting that if any Macca album gets revised to 'classic' status it's RRS. RRS includes My Love and Little Lamb Dragonfly as well as the very melodically pleasant Medley and One More Kiss. I listen to Red Rose Speedway much more than Back to the Egg.

Armed Forces , Setting Sons and look Sharp (Joe Jackson) amongst my favourites from that year . Cheers Martin
