I'm a 3rd generation veteran, my dads WWll outfit was caught behind enemy lines in Borneo for 5 months, eating anything they could to survive, snakes, rats, monkeys, with some help from native pygmies! When they were rescued he was first served a Asian version of Spam, he loved it until he died, I don't remember him ever leaving a scrap of anything on his plate!
I read an article that said the Hormel Company shipped over three billion cans of Spam overseas during WW2. Said that when the German soldiers could get their hands on it they loved it.
You mentioned that Treet has a mouthfeel/ texture similar to bologna. Not surprising considering it’s based on mechanically separated chicken like the vast majority of non beef bologna’s today. In terms of deli meat Treet is closer to bologna and Spam is closer to deli ham. Both are delicious, it just depends on what you’re in the mood for.
Have you tried bringing a pot of water to boil, then add the sliced SPAM, boil for 5 minutes, turn off heat, cover with lid, let it sit for 5 minutes. Take out, put Spam into a sieve, rising off, under running water. It removes a lot of salt. Then cook it how you want.
@charliedavis8894 And your comment added to the conversation, how? Have you tried it? No. You can try it on just one slice. Guessing high salt intake isn't a problem for you, yet? We buy salt cured ham, the whole ham has to be soaked to be edible. Typical Ham company instructions... "Wash ham thoroughly in warm water. Use a stiff brush to remove surface mold if present. This mold is in no way injurious. ... To reduce saltiness, soak ham in cold water for 12-24 hours prior to cooking. Changing the water about every four hours during soaking will aid in drawing salt from the ham." Other than getting rid of the huge salt hit, it doesn't affect the taste. In fact, you now can taste the ham. We use salted canned anchovies in oil about 4 fish to a pot of chili or beef stew, spaghetti sauce. We wash them under running water to help remove salt. It's the flesh of the anchovies you are after, not the salt. Even then, the salt in the recipe has to be greatly reduced. You dice them, then use a fork to make a paste to cook with the meat in the recipe. Anchovies are a trick to add umami to the taste of a meat based recipe used by restaurants. Do not use anchovies paste from the store.
@@markraciborski4289 Thanks for the information. I know a lot of people have to watch the salt intake. I am going to try it out spam and use other seasonings then grill it. I will put it in an upcoming video.
@markraciborski4289 My comment added a different perspective, something you can't seem to grasp. You're wrong in your assumption, I made my comment specifically because I HAVE tried it. Boiling, soaking, and rinsing Spam removes the meat flavor along with the salt. No, salt isn't usually an issue for people who eat only 1 meal a day. I eat Spam on a limited basis and I mix it with other foods that tend to absorb the salt. As far as the rest of your comment, that's a head scratcher. First of all, we were discussing Spam, not salt cured ham or anchovies so I'm unsure why you drug those into the conversation. Second, if salt is such an issue for you, then why are you buying such salty foods? I wouldn't but it's your choice, your money and your health.
Dad would buy Treet, but I always preferred Spam. I'd eat either one before I'd touch the Prairie Boy meats or potted meat. I love the energy of your videos!
I have to admit.....I can chow down on potted meat. I was brought up with it. I think primarily due to its low cost. My parents had to stretch the money. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
I love all sorts of weird canned food/meat but potted meat just tastes so bizarre, like it's AI generated or something lol. And 'off brand' potted meat? It's like a fever dream
@@bluecollarcook Maybe a bit too salty, I do like the jalapeno version though. I can crush 'em with some pilot bread though, helps to even out the salt imo. Didn't eat them as a kid, but I did love a nice cold raw hotdog, no bun or anything lmao. Then have a PB&J with the leftover buns
I don't really eat anything that contains potato starch, but I really don't eat anything that states mechanically separated meat. Yack! LOL!!! I do like Spam though. You've got a little bit of a Treet casualty, LOL!
I used to like Treet but I think the recipe has changed, I've tried Spam but I just can't get used to the awful spicing in the stuff it reminds me of lunchmeat that has gone off.
Like one commenter already noted Treet is closer to bologna than Spam. Armour does make a Spam like product in a similar can that the Treet is in called Armour Pork Luncheon Meat. Try that and do a real apples to apples comparison. 👍
I was unaware Armor made another variation. I have never seen it on the shelves of my local stores. Would you happen to know of a grocery chain that carries it? I would love to try it out.

Thanks for watching. I love deviled ham. The premade stuff has got so expensive that I don't buy it anymore. I will have to give this a try. Have a great day.
The Great Value canned meat is the closest thing to Spam that I have found. Really like both. As a matter of fact, those two and Underwood deviled ham are the only canned meats I buy.
Spam is my preferred caned meat I like it just on plain bread mustard and miracle whip like my spam kind of toasty, though it kind of burns or something like that Chris treat. I don’t think give me don’t look that good but I don’t know I don’t never tried.

In the 50s and early 60s, government commodities would include a white can of Amour luncheon meat. My parents could not afford SPAM. My mother was a great cook, but did not realize that she had to grill or fry the meat in order to make it palatable. She would simply slice it up and place it between two slices of bread. It wasn’t till I started dating Filipino women that I learned how to appreciate SPAM. 🙏💪🌎🌏🌍❤️🇺🇸🖖

I am certainly not an expert on "gluten" or suffer from any gluten allergies but, Treet contains wheat. Gluten is a protein naturally found in some grains including wheat, barley, and rye. Thanks for watching and have a great day.
