Have you seen HAUSU? Let me know what you think! Also, what other films should I bring into The Cult House?
You should do The Blair Witch Project and maybe the second one, Book of Shadows
@@savageunicorn167 BLAIR WITCH definitely deserves consideration! I've actually never seen the sequel, just the reboot.
Loved your video! I vote for a Brazilian movie, "Bacurau". I would love to see your impressions on this one. ✌️😁
I have. Didn't think I'd like it but I loved it.
Happy for anything horror that isn't stupid found footage or so many tropes
Messiah of Evil; not as good as House 77, but it has it's own world.
I loved that the director looked to his daughter for ideas.
I loved just how insane it was. Learning that the director was alive during the bombing of Hiroshima is heartbreaking though.
He lost all his childhood friends at the age of 7, can you even imagine how traumatizing it must have been, losing all you friends who were kids just like you at the age 7? That's something i wish to no one.
And then what the radiation did to his mind.
Loved this movie and how insane it it. Kung Fu is the best and deserved better!
Kung Fu is my favorite too!
She was the inspiration for street fighter.
The fact that the movie was hyped up even before productions started was the best part
I feel so bad for the daughter, imagine witnessing such nightmares like that at an age younger than 11.
but she helped write it!
for me Hausu was quintesential cinema: a film where anything can happen at any time and it's served beautifully
Before Sam Raimi's Cabin & Steve Miner's House, there was Obayashi's House. So goofy but entertaining and sweet. I know some will complain that the effects look fake and dated but that's the whole point, its from a little girl's point of view or imagination. I wish we got a sequel, House 2: The Second Japanese Story.
If only.... Rest in peace, Ôbayashi-san!
I think the FX look better than Hulk or Thanos.
Great video. For me, Hausu occupies the same space that Evil Dead films do. The surreal playfulness that accompanies the horror leads me to believe that this film may have had more of an impact on Sam Raimi's cult classics than anything else. I might be wrong, because Hausu came out in 1977 and Evil Dead came out quite soon after in 1981, but I can't help feeling like there may have been some influence here.
except the evil dead is funny and amazing and hausu sucked
@@manfrombritain6816 who asked
I watched House years ago and didn't really like it but appreciate this video for explaining the director's vision.
It has many fans, but it’s definitely not everyone’s slice of watermelon ;) Thanks for watching and commenting on any case!
I know people have different tastes and I can respect that, but patriot121317 I really don't think we'd get along in real life. I can hang out short term with normies with normie tastes but actually having to endure long conversations about "The Fast and Furious" and "Marvel" movies would drive me up the wall just like "House" probably drives you up the wall.
I wonder if I'll be a vengeful ghost when I die?
It sure looks like fun.
As a massive Tim and Eric fan, this movie was awesome.
What would you think of the theory that Ryoko is a reincarnation of Auntie's fiancé and at the end of the movie the two are reunited? She seems to have a very ethereal presence and there was so much emphasis put on her approaching the House through the garden at the end, like it was building up to them coming together again... also the movie points out that both Gorgeous and Ryoko are both wearing red lipstick, which seems to be how Auntie's spirit entered Gorgeous...
Maybe I'm reading too much into it lol
This makes me love the film even more with the background of how he had his daughter co-write the film no wonder it had alot of childlike cartoonist feel of if.
And to hear how he also basically writes this story as tribute to his group of friends who were killed during the nuclear Bombing 😢
I always felt like it was something of a coming of age tale where the girls have to grapple with adulthood through the lens of a horror movie
I don’t think the filmmakers had that in mind, but that’s the beauty of movies. Your interpretation isn’t any less valid than their intentions. What do they say- the beauty is in the eyes of the beholder
The beginning started off as a coming of age melodrama
I like how in the beginning it starts like coming of age melodrama
Appreciate your effort :) I 've just watched this today. I'm not a fan of cult films but this is way better than most movies.
I had such a big crush on Kungfu when I was younger. She was the real gorgeous to me! This movie makes me miss practical effects so much. Great horror movie. Also, doing a video on Sweet Home if you havent already would be cool!
I don't get it why the entire film is in Japanese but when they say house is in English. the best way I could describe the movie is sort of like taking a fantasy Aladdin carpet on acid through hell. bizarre spooky and wonderful
HA! Incredible description! As far as the title goes, I think Obayashi-San simply wanted to market the film for international appeal. He was hoping it would be a worldwide hit, he just didn't know it would take decades to happen :)
A nice overview of this crazy film! Well done. You asked about other cult films and there are so many under the radar and lesser reviewed films that meet that (pardon the pun) criterion. Jowderowski's SANTA SANGRE comes to mind, as does Shock Corridor by Samuel Fuller. The little known flick "The Sadist" and William Shatner's "The Intruder' may also apply. Some more modern flicks like Chillerama and One-Eyed Monster may also be of interest.

This movie is literally what a dream feels like
Just pause the video when u said he worked on commercials, no wonder why I felt half of this movie was a perfume commercial

I loved every little bit of it before seeing the review now I even love it more. Masterpiece😍 plus I want that hader shirt so bad🤣
everything you make is so good
Thank you :)
Every time I think about this movie my day gets a tiny bit better.
I don't think it's Gorgeous possessed by Auntie at the end there - I think it literally is Auntie, having grown younger from eating so many girls. Either way the result is pretty similar though, as it's clearly Auntie in control.
Found your account after watching this movie. Really fantastic! For sure keeping an eye out for more videos

Just watched tonight and loved it 😁
So happy to read this!

I have watched the movie is so awesome and the visuals, editing, and special effects were really interesting and amazing. I love how the director Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 10 year old daughter at the time Chigumi came up with the concept with her childhood fears. I love all the characters and the movie is one of the best Japanese movies ever in history!!!!!! The movie is always going to be one of my favorite movies ever of all time!!!!!!!!!!!😍🥰🇯🇵💖💜💙🌈🦄📱
A weird ass movie you should watch is called Stacy. Its a Japanese film I do believe but damn what a weird concept of whatever that movie is considered. Lol I love your content. Please stay awesome. Can't wait for the next video. Much love and support 💜😁

Wow, this is best possible comment.
I saw this movie on a shelf at Barnes and Noble as a blu-ray release of the Criterion Collection. Now I wanna see it more. I have some suggestions for you: Scanners, The Dead Zone and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Great suggestions, Peter. I'll add those to the queue. I've actually never seen ROCKY HORROR, but I hear the best way is at a revival screening, which they've been doing every weekend at one of my favorite arthouse theaters in LA... before the pandemic that is.
I hope you get the chance to check out HOUSE. It's also currently streaming on Criterion Channel.
@@cineflect Thanks for taking my suggestions into consideration! I’ll check out house soon enough, thanks again!
Oooo ya...Dead Zone is GREAT! This was a FANTASTIC breakdown...LOVED IT ! Sooo full of detailed extra info. Thanks sooo much. ❤️ (Just watched the movies an hr before finding your piece).
I just checked it out on HBO MAX, absolutely amazing! I'm a huge Evil Dead fan and it honestly felt very similar. I love everything about this film. The music, the camp, the sexy japanese girls, the scares. It's a really fun film and I'd give it a flat out 9/10. Would be a legit 10 if the green screen stuff was slightly less ridiculous 😂 amazing film either way and I'd love to have that cat as a tattoo.
That would be a sick tattoo. I have it on a shirt :) Happy you were able to see it and loved it. I didn't realize it was on HBO Max, hopefully more people discover it there.
I watched it on HBO max too

Damn those mutton chops a man could only dream of mutton chops like that
#ManscapingGoals
The absurdity of this movie looks like it was a big inspiration for the WarioWare games. So good.
For a scary movie, House has such a pretty, dream-like set. I love the soft light filter along with the painted backgrounds. Whoever decided to do that should be awarded, it made the movie feel like a horror story book. I was more focused on the background during the scene with the flying head that bit one of the girl's butt.
Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories
PLZ make a video on this really special anime!
I'm a big fan of your wonderful works, they deserve to be seen by many more!
Thank you! I’ll look into this one, not familiar with it.
@@cineflect Wow u actually replied! Thx a lot^^
I adored this film lol
There's honestly not a lot of movies i just sit back and enjoy as they come. Deeper themes or not i just enjoyed the unique ride. Maybe on other viewing I'll go deeper but in a movie market saturated with comic book flicks this is like a pallet cleanser
what if fantasy was actually still in class and she was actually hallucinating everything that just happened
I need more 😢
Who else is here from learning that the Teamsesh skull logo uses the same “House” font from this movie?
so thats where that cat meme came from @15:40
id like to find more information on the manga if you can
J. J virgin and her whole family should visit the house. She will definitely enjoy it.
I wonder if Evil Dead was influenced by this film. There are some similarities imo
I woke up at 5am and this was on TCM,watched first half and googled later. Never have guessed it was a horror(didnt get to that part)
welp. time to add to my criterion order
Great cult classic film! You're so cool Kung Fu!!
#KungFuForever
Where did you find Nobuhiko Obayashi's interview?
It's part of the Criterion release.
My friend brought this movie over the other night LOL good God I'm glad I got to see that was up there with some of the most bizzare things I've ever watched all the way through. It was mad lol the last time I was that perplexed by a movie was maybe GUMMO.
Damn I'm starting to be a big fan of your content
Aw, shucks!
You should do Curtains next and Tourist Trap... Two great cult movies.
Does anyone know if there's an English dub release?
So what happens to Gorgeous? And do you think Fantasy is dead?
Upon my rewatch last week, I think they both passed away. Gorgeous is a ghost at the end, as well are all the other girls.
Nice Movie, very interesting.
11:28👌
I really enjoyed this movie.
I do find it funny that the cat dies simply by passing out.
Saw it on HBO Max, it was completely gonzo
Could you look at The Bat People or maybe it’s called It Lives By Night? It was made in the 70’s it was kind of strange but reminds me of The Wolf Man or The Incredible Hulk with the Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde theme of dark counterparts emerging from outside sources of trauma to the body.
Went looking for the novelization but couldn’t find it :(
it’s mac’s hair in the tub, you can see the green ribbon.
Pretty damn good movie
The fact that I want to re-watch it yet again even after making this video says a lot.

Because I'm pretty that's not a remake of HAUSU...
You should look at Barbarella
I'm an absolute horror movie fanatic. I'd been seeing this movie on best horror movie lists and hearing recommendations for ever but the trailer looked so terrible and ridiculous i put off watching it till now because I figured i'd hate it, well I just saw it tonight with my horror movie watch group.
Yup i hated it haha. I thought it was one of the most obnoxious and borderline unwatchable movies i'd seen in some time and nobody in the group liked it. One thing that struck me throughout was the absolutely abysmal editing and acting, editing so bad half of us were routinely confused at what a shot sequence was even trying to convey and how much of what was on screen did not seem like it was done on purpose, it seemed like they were just sorta winging it and it really showed.
Then It ends and i look it up to find the director didn't storyboard anything and almost none of the actors had ever acted before. Usually with well regarded movies I don't like I can at least see what the appeal is but this one i just don''t really see what people enjoy about it.
It immediately struck me as a really really incompetent attempt at a japanese Evil Dead.
I adore this film, and I just watched it last week I believe. Each time I watch it, I'm able to piece things together, and it gives the film a much more ominous vibe as you recognize them even early on. Each character plays their role, and every scene is deliberate, as well as the dialogue. Subtle clues such as the cat, framing certain characters in a circle alluding to Gorgeous' haunting Auntie, to the choppy movements whenever her spirit is present. To hearing the cat meow at certain phrases, like when Gorgeous speaks about how she will be a bride. Throughout the film, Fantasy notices things that everyone else is oblivious to. Each character plays their role, ignoring reality and treating these scenes like paintings. I'm glad it's not realistic. Most movies aren't anyways. This one makes it clear it's not real. It is an essay not afraid to underline, bold, italicize, and color code itself. Hell, some of it's typed, the other half written and the rest drawn. This movie is INTENTIONAL, just as much as Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is. I do see this much more prevalent in the first half of the movie, as I feel it's more all over the place in the second half.
It literally feels like I'm watching an RPG game from the 80s and 90s brought to life. The simple fact that it reminds me of RPG's shows how ahead of it's time it was, especially with how many of my favorite RPGs during the NES, SNES, PSX era were Japanese. Definitely could see a lot of creators being influenced by this movies, especially with it's transitions. Obayashi is not afraid to break norms, and I'm glad he did. The experience this movie gives you is something most movies are too scared to do. And, as any great artist does, it plays onto it's strengths. It doesn't try to be something it's not, it's bold and proud of it's budget, or lack thereof. It's juxtaposition between childlike fantasies and heartbreaking horror of everyone dying, children practically, is just... crazy lmao. It's fun, trippy, yet tragic. Really a combination of feelings you don't find too often cuddled together.
I have so many reasons why I love this movie. This movie breaks the "rules" man sets upon themselves, to their own detriment. What's the point of being great if you're boring? This is great and the opposite of boring. Actresses have never acted before? Fuck it, they can still do it. And they did. I loved how cheesy this was. But I also love Eric Andre and Tim & Eric lol. I know shit art when I see it. This isn't it.
I love this movie not just cause I love this movie. But because it knows what it is, and does an AMAZING job at bringing it to life. As an artist, this movie hits all the right spots. Everyone's different though. This movie may look random af, there's nothing random about this movie.
@@gregoryedwards9097 If you read about the actual production and the chaos it was I think you're desperately clinging to intentionality with a lot of things that weren't at all intentional. The movie is a chaotic mess because they didn't really have much of a plan, they just tried to pull things together in editing as much as possible.
This movie however committed the worst bad movie sin a movie can commit and that it was just boring. It reminded me of a lot of bad anime where they try to portray characters having emotions and personalities in such a silly or unrealistic way that you never once find a reason to care what happens to them.
There's a handful of directors that can pull off having movies with people who have never acted before and can't act, David Lynch comes to mind but he's at least smart enough to know that you don't give them the main starring and supporting roles in the movie.
Oh man it was a ride. I just watched it to see your video. I finally found a reason to watch this. It was crazy and I like the themes that it's trying to explore and I like Kobayashi just by the look of him alone. He seems like he knows what he's doing. But that certainly didn't work for me. I hated this film that I kind of enjoyed it by the end and not in the good way. I laughed at it and I now want to watch it with friends just to have a wild ride together. I hope that people enjoy it. I didn't. It's the cheeziest, most early 2000's Scooby-doo film and kid cheezy tv shows that I've ever watched in my opinion. The camera work can be great but apart from that, the editing and the music choices killed the movie so much for me. I was amazed about how much I found it bad while having some great stuff. It's certainly not for everybody but I'm happy that you liked it. I just can't.
Haha! I’m glad you were finally able to see it. Thanks for giving it a shot. “Not for everyone” is exactly right.
I can’t argue with any of the issues you brought up and everyone’s personal enjoyment will greatly vary, but for my money this is a pure shot of cinematic creativity the likes of which we rarely see. Just to warn you, it may have long-lasting effects ;)
What's the art you used at 2:17 from?

Ok
It’s really the most Japanese film adaption ever.
America: Here is a film called Jaws, Japan. It is about man versus nature. The heroes are men. A shark eats pretty girls. We adapted it from a novel using professional screenwriters. It has an iconic score, featuring an ominous cello.
Japan: Here is a similar film called Hausu. It is about love versus war. The heroes are girls. A house eats the pretty girls. The director’s tween daughter wrote most of it. It has a bizarre jazz score, featuring pop song by GoDiego and a piano that eats people. This is our answer to your “Jaws” film. Like Jaws, but better because 🇯🇵!
America: This is so efiing fascinating.
Japan: We don’t know why, America. It is pretty straightforward.
