For me this is what the sequels missed, the detailed score matching up perfectly with what happened on the screen to hit you with double the emotion. I love Johns work so maybe it is that he doesn't get the same access to the movie as he did previously to match up his score with whats being told. Also the cutting of the new movies doesn't help.
