How To Spot SCAM Reborn Doll Selling Sites

- The number of scam sites is growing so fast! I even saw a scam Facebook page called "reborns near me" that stole pictures from artists I know. Here are some things to look for:
1. The site does not have a name that has anything to do with reborns or dolls.
2. The site looks exactly the same as other reborn selling sites that have totally different names.
3. The same sculpts have different names. The same few sculpts are used over and over again.
4. There is an option to buy more than one doll that is exactly the same.
5. There is not artist name or nursery name given as the painter of the kit. The listing doesn't say that the doll is painted with Genesis Heat Set Paints and weighted with fine glass beads.
6. The dolls are all close to the same price- usually between $50 and $100.

I'm 17 and don't have a job yet but I had 60 dollars and I wanted a reborn so I went on Amazon and bought from someone who makes them. I've had him for almost five months and it looks brand new. Some people had problems with them but I must have been lucky
You probably got lucky and got a decent quality starter reborn painted in a factory. Some day I hope you will be able to upgrade to a real reborn painted by an artist so you can see the difference.

I do make custom orders. My customs range in price from about $250 to $500 shipped in the US. The sculpt you are referencing is April, a long sold out, limited edition sculpt. If anyone tries to sell you this sculpt for less than several hundred dollars or a doll made from this sculpt for less than several thousand dollars, it's a scam. You may be able to find a pre-loved doll for less but, in my experience, she is rarely available for resale. I can help you find a similar sculpt. I’m 17, I’ve wanted one of these dolls since I was little. I’ve been going threw some stuff, and my mom thought it would be special to get me one this Christmas. Sadly, she didn’t look into the website into after she ordered. Total scam. She trying to get a refund, but no answers in return. Since she ordered off a scam site, I have almost little to no change of her getting me another one from a good website.
I'm so sorry! I hear that from many people. They have family members that want to get a special gift and find these sites that pay to be the first site when you search for reborn dolls. People think that because it's the first site when you search, it must be the best or most popular. It's not.

I got an a reborn doll from a "scam" site which is still hand painted and it has great veining etc. Someone else who brought one from a scam place said their reborn they brought there was far better than one they got from Ashton Drake at less than a quarter of the price.

Facebook has become the new center of scams. Facebook is unregulated, so it is easier to scam on there. Some of the things you can look for are the same for websites, such as using broken/weird English and answering your questions at odd hours. Anybody who is pressuring you to make a fast decision is also suspect. Also if someone doesn't communicate with you or supply pictures at every angle. Lastly, always pay with a payment method, like PayPal Goods and Services, that gives you buyer protection if you get scammed. This may make the cost of the doll more, but it is worth it. Again, if the seller pressures you to use a different payment method, walk away. I hope this helps!

i would recommend taking a look at some legit reborn sellers on ebay or etsy. although they sell for around $400, it’s much cheaper than 1000’s of dollars. always do research on the artist before buying!

@@saraabdellatif4108 Reborns.com has dolls at all price levels, from about $150 and up. I have a cuddle baby on their right now that is $135. The reason reborns are not cheap is the materials to make them are expensive. Let me break down just the materials for a painted hair doll:
$35 the cheapest reborn doll vinyl parts
(most are $60 and up)
$10 four pounds of glass beads (for a lightly weighted doll)
$15 reborn doll body
$7 the cheapest acrylic eyes
$3 the cheapest lashes
$25 polyfill, paints, glues, magnets, pacifier, birth certificate, brushes, electricity
$45 diaper, onesie, outfit, blanket, wrapping paper and packing materials (that's the minimum of what collectors expect to come with their doll)
That's $140 right there.
Then you have to factor in the average of 20 hours to paint the doll. At $3 an hour that brings the cost to $200. Would you work for $3 a hour? Reborns are a work of art and are priced much like any high-end collectable, because that is what they are.

Share your story and the name of the site with others so they know where NOT to buy them. I'm not going to tell you to throw it away, since I know it must have cost you around $100. Perhaps sell it (making sure you tell potential buyers that it's a fake) or give it away. Then use that money to start a fund for a REAL reborn doll that is hand-painted by a real artist.

It's not easy to learn to paint reborns. Your first attempts will probably not look that good. If you are serious about it, try purchasing Shaylen Maxwell's Reborn A to Z course. It will cost you around $500, but very worth it.

Some of the "scam" sites though have realistic looking babies which can actually at times be better than some well known brand names one. I got one quite cheap from a scam site which hand paints it's babies/dolls and she has good veining etc. Many of us do not care about brands but just want dolls which look realistic as possible.
There are two problems with your argument. First, on a scam site, you do not get what you see. Scam sites use deceptive advertising in the form of pictures of other painter's work. When I sell a doll, I show the actual doll I'm selling, not someone else's picture. I have had people send me the dolls they bought on scam sites and shared with me the pictures online. They are totally not the same. Second, these sites are not paying sculptors for their work. They are making illegal copies of the vinyl sculpts. It would be like making a print of a piece of famous artwork and giving the artist that created it nothing.

yes, kaydora is a scam site. if you take a look at different sites you may see the same doll sold at a different price. the dolls are really cheap s for how amazing and realistic the doll is.

What are some of the other shops you could buy a reborn?
There are really only four reputable places to buy a real reborn doll that is hand-painted by an artist. 1) an artists website or Facebook page (Make sure it's not a company. No reputable company does it's business through Facebook.) 2) Etsy (Again, make sure it's a person, not a company.) 3) eBay (Again, check for a person) 4) reborns.com. If you are not sure if it's a company or a person, email and talk to them for a bit. It will be very clear if it's a company from the broken English and pressure to buy. A real person may take a bit longer to answer you (because most artists are not full-time), but most communicate well online and will not pressure you into buying. They will provide additional pictures, if you want, and answer your questions completely. We want you to be satisfied!
i recommend you buy from reborns.com ! although their dolls are expensive, each doll that is sold is certified and 💯 real! i also recommend looking at some etsy and ebay dolls ( do some research on the artists before you buy!

A full silicone doll from an experienced, reputable artist costs thousands. A lot of the fake sites say the doll is silicone, but it's not. They all look alike because they are all the same vinyl kit that they have make illegal copies of.

Full silicones costs $4000 to $6000 new and are usually sold through eBay or from the artist directly. Artists make very few of these per year because the process is so labor-intensive. Full silicones are not weighted with glass beads. They are solid silicone, which is why they are so heavy. Partial silicones have a head and limbs of silicone with a cloth body. They are weighted with glass beads. They are cuddlier than full silicones, but you can't bathe them like the fulls. If you are buying ANYWHERE, ask to see a picture of the doll without any clothes on so you can see what the body looks like. Hope this helps.

@@falakayub5899 Your best bet is to buy from a silicone artist. This will take a lot of research on your part, as scams are even more rampant with silicone dolls than regular reborns. See if there is a Facebook group that only is for silicone dolls. People there should let you know about the best artists. Be prepared to pay thousands for a good quality baby that is newborn size.

Certainly some dolls have that feature, especially sculpts that have been made recently. Older sculpts do not. And, of course, there is the problem that most pictures do not include a shot of the back of the neck as it destroys the realism.

I checked it out and it is not a scam. The pictures you see are exactly what you will get and worth what you pay for them. However, these dolls are "starter" reborns that are mass-produced in a factory. They have no hand painting. True reborn dolls are hand-painted individually by an artist. Each one is unique and one-of-a-kind. Their sculpting and painting make them much more realistic and therefore more expensive than factory-made dolls.

The good sites are getting harder to find. First I would suggest, once you know artists' names or nursery/business name, to go to their individual website, Facebook page, RUclips channel, or Instagram. More and more artists have a social media presence now and sell through there. Do NOT just search for "reborn dolls" on Facebook, as scammers are everywhere there. And there is no buyer protections or way to report them when they sell through Facebook. If you don't know artists or nurseries yet, Reborns.com is a very reputable site with reborns at all price points. I would encourage you, whatever website you look on, to ask the artist for additional pictures and/or communicate with them ahead of time. If they answer in weird English and in the middle of the night, they are a scammer from China.

I'm being very selective about which projects I will take on, since I have had so many people interested in make-overs. Honestly, I HATE painting these kits. They smell bad when I bake them and they don't take paint the way a normal kit would. You forgot to mention the most important thing on why a reborn is expensive. Its more then just the stuff it's made of. Real reborns are not made in a factory on an assembly line. Artist put their time ,effort ,energy,and skill into making each doll. That's what is the most expensive, and rightfully so. If an artist makes a realistic baby they deserve to be compensated and not just with chump change
I did get scammed! I brought a reborn doll supposed to be 21 inches and had glass eyes and hair. I received a 8 inches painted eyes and painted hair . I brought from gooddealsus.

Silicone dolls are not my thing, but if I wanted one I would start by looking on reborns.com and checking out the ROSE Doll Show Facebook group. I know the artists there are legit. There are also probably Facebook groups run by silicone collectors who could point you in the right direction.

Yes, they are getting worse and worse. It used to be that you'd get a cheap knock-off kit badly factory painted with a cheap wig. Now you're just getting dollar store dolls.

Individually, hand-made reborn dolls by an artist are not sold on Amazon. Bonnie Brown, the sculptor who created Saskia, does not sell on Amazon, but only through reputable reborn doll supply companies. There the sculpt alone is $119. Just because you got a piece of paper within does not make him the real sculpt.

Is brandford exchange a scam
That depends on your definition of a reborn doll. In the broadest terms, a reborn is any doll with at least some hand-painting that is designed to look like a real baby. Bradford Exchange dolls meet this criteria. However, most serious collectors would say that a real reborn doll has been sculpted by a sculptor and completely hand-painted and hand-rooted by an artist. So, in that sense, Bradford exchange, Ashton-Drake, and other similar dolls would not be considered reborns. They are also not a scam because they don't use stolen media to promote their dolls. Scam sites use pictures and videos of ultra high-end silicones, but send you cheap plastic dolls. What you see is what you get with Bradford Exchange.

It's a scam. Real artists don't offer discounts. The price is the price, no matter how many you buy from them.

Then there is the body, weighting materials, hair, eyes, magnets, and the cute blanket and clothes collectors expect. Then there is the 20-40 hours it takes to make one. Reborn artists have to be incredibly skilled and that costs money, too. They are works of art!

Etsy does have scammers on it. Always ask if the pictures on the listing are the artist's own work. If they say no, don't buy from them. Also look out for people who reply in broken or weird English. That's another red flag.

Ashton Drakes are mostly factory painted with a tiny bit of handpainted embellishment. I would classify them as "starter" reborns.

The short answer? Yes. Doing just a tiny bit of research, users have shared pictures that show very different dolls than what they ordered. The website domain was only created in May of 2020. Trust Pilot and other fact-checking websites say it's not legit. It offers discounts if you buy more than one (no legit website or artist does that). The descriptions don't match the pictures. For example, they are using artists prototype pictures that show dolls with rooted hair, yet in the description it says "rayon wig". They count on you falling love with the picture and not reading the fine print. Description is also in weird English (i.e. "birth card" instead of birth certificate). The factory is located in China.

Yeah, it is easy to get scammed on Facebook. Anyone can set up an account and it's easy to steal pictures from other artists. Facebook has no one to go to if you get scammed. Often scammers block comments they don't like or want. I'm so sorry for you! On my Facebook page I sometimes do give aways for people who have been scammed.

They also make people think they are sole proprietor artists, as most reborn artists have and sell through Facebook pages. Always be suspect of Facebook ads. Anyone can get them. Also try to make a comment. If it won't let you, it's a scam!

I wish I had too. I bought from this site and although the doll was actually lovely, I had a problem with an outfit that I purchased. They sent me a different and cheaper one. Trying to talk to someone is impossible.

I got the Alina doll and looks similar to her picture
For several YEARS before I purchased my first reborn......I researched artists & sites. My very first reborn was a Saskia kit by an artist that was still fairly new, but had a lot of talent and the doll was gorgeous for an affordable price. I've only purchased 2 dolls without a COA. First one....was somewhat of a disappointment but it was used & cheap and you get what you pay for. Not necessarily a scam, just someone who doesn't paint as well as they think they do & a 1st Mom who didn't send him to me with quality fillers. (I'll fix that when I get the chance & it was pretty darn cheap) Second one doesn't have a COA because it's an open kit. So I did a search on the kit, when to the source......to make certain it was true. It was & she's gorgeous. If I'm purchasing a used reborn, I go do research on the artist. Thus far I've been able to find posts or videos of the reborn connected with the artist.....and each time I've also been able to verify the previous mom's purchase. If you've fallen in love with a particular reborn but think the price is too steep.....do a search for the sculpt & go check out the kit price, price of eyes, hair, & other necessary items.....then think about the time involved ect. Most are reasonable considering unless dealing with a very experienced prototype artist. However, you might be surprised to find that sometimes even they may be willing to take a decent offer if it's paid in full on purchase. My Marcus sculpt I'm 2nd mom. I follow his artist. His 1st mom posted him not more than a couple weeks after she finished his layaway due to financial issues. I bought him at the discounted price she listed due to him being "used" when all she'd done was unbox him & repack him. If you want to purchase a reborn for cheaper "used" is a good place to start, but again do your research. And for those who think they can't afford a good quality reborn.....I'm not even middle class. I set aside money & save up. Yes, it may take a bit longer, but to me it's worth it. Once you get some experience you start knowing your kits and about what price ranges to expect to see.
You are a model for others to follow. As a collector, you have to do your research. I have made a video about how to get less expensive, but still quality, reborn dolls.
No legit site sells reborn or unpainted dolls for $25. Ashton Drake and Paradise gallery have whole dolls for $90-$150. Bountiful Baby sells legit unpainted kits for $90+. These 3 are reliable, legit sites.
You know that. I know that. But many new collectors don't know that. They see pictures of prototype dolls, fall in love with the art form, and start googling. The scam sites pay to be the first hits they see. They click on that first site and see what (to them) are fairly expensive dolls that are usually around $100 because that is enough to seem expensive without being too expensive. Again, looking only at the prototype pictures (not scrolling down to read the description or look at additional photos and not knowing misleading terminology) they purchase.
