- Here I try an improvisation on the instrument Tanbour, which I am in no way proficient in. But it is an instrument that very easily lends itself to trance-like experiences when playing.

nice playing. it is better to strum the tanbour with your index finger because it allows tanbour's unique technique 'shor/panjeh' to be played. also better to play the top string with the thumb to allow the other fingers to play quick ornaments. but overall it was a pleasing performance so thank you.

Yes, my friend (who actually plays the tanbour) has been trying to teach me the technique over the years, but I haven't practiced enough to be proficient at it yet. So I cheat.

@@zovalentine7305 This is a touchy subject and I will try to explain it objectively. Persian is an ethnicity while Iranian is a nationality. Iranians (regardless of their ethnic background) in the West often call themselves 'Persians' as it seems less hostile to Westerners (especially Americans) compared with 'Iranian' due to the ongoing hostility since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, beginning with the Iran hostage crisis of US Embassy diplomats in the very same year. To confuse the matters further, Iran was called Persia until the fall of Qajar dynasty so anyone living in Persia in that time would have been called, albeit incorrectly, 'Persian'. This was the Persian Empire's doctrine in attempting to remove ethnic minorities (Kurds, Lurs, Baluchs etc.) of their cultures to create a unified and homogenised empire. Farsi (Persian language) was selected as the official language of the country and education of the minority in their mother tongue has not been allowed to this day.

Hello, Filip! I'm a big fan of your "Let's Talk Religion" videos on your other channel, and, like yourself, I'm also an oud player (which I came to having spent more than half my life playing bagpipes... Go figure).
My love for the oud drew me to Iranian players like Negar Bouban and Yassemin Shahhosseini, who in turn drew me to other master Iranian musicians like Hossein Alizadeh and Kayhan Kalhor, among others.
Microtonal instrument acquisition syndrome led me to acquire a setar a while back, which has been great fun to explore. I just got my hands on a shourangiz, which is something of a three-way hybrid between a setar, tar, and tanbour. It's played with setar technique but has six strings and a (partially) skin-covered soundboard like a tar and the body of a tanbour. If, as I suspect, your passion for Iranian music continues to grow, then I highly recommend picking one up as soon as time and money allow. It's an amazing sounding and uniquely expressive instrument, and now I go to bed at night excited to play it the next day. I'm pretty sure you'd dig it.

Shourangiz frets are tied in the same way as the Tar or Setar, to play Dastgah music. It is a cross between a Tar and Setar and not a popular instrument.
Tanbour is a folk instrument, and you will not be able to play Dastgah repertoire with it. The frets are tied chromatically more or less to just intonation. It is not a microtonal instrument as you will not be able play microintervals with it. Tanbour's repertoire are maghams which originate in sacred practice of Yarsanism. Tanbour maghams should not be confused with Turkish/Arabic maghams. Completely different concepts.
