- For 2024, this video shares the campsites I hope to visit on my northbound (NOBO) traverse of the John Muir Trail (JMT) in California. I discuss three tools that can help aspiring hikers. Caltopo is a mapping tool that has an amazing capability to visualize your trek. Google Earth Pro's 3D imagery provides stellar details of potential campsites. I also have a spreadsheet for you to copy and edit your own version. Finally, the last three minutes of the video review my four key attributes of a primo campsite.
Photos and video footage from my 2019 and 2021 Sobo trek on the JMT.

I did the JMT SoBo in 2012, and I have a permit to go NoBo in 2024 in August. Looking forward to it. Thanks for posting the video, and the spreadsheets. Useful information.
Excellent ... hope we run into each other out there.
Nice, thank you so much for sharing. I’m 60, starting NOBO in august 2024. Am apprehensive about start to Muir Trail Ranch, otherwise I feel good about it.
It'll be great ... I leave Aug 6 from Cottonwood Lakes. See you on the trail!
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. subbed & 👍17
Thanks for the kudos. Hope you have a great hike this summer!
Thanks for sharing, I am doing the JMT in August. So good to see your plan as well.
Nice! Can't wait!
Nice Video! Thanks. Will do the JMT the third time in a row :-) Just a heads-up: Bullfrog Lake is a No-Camping zone!
Hi, yes! I agree on Bullfrog as no camping! Great place for water and a swim, though.
Think about it.......once you resupply at VVR, you don't HAVE to have any more re-supply supplies. 2 days later you are at Reds, two three days later Tuolumne Meadows. At those two spots you can get any "small" items you may need. Just get what you need for the REST of the trip at VVR, then pickup any filler you may need at two above mentioned places.. You can also eliminate a few meals from your pack if you use Reds & Tuol as places to tank up with cooked food. Its not that difficult.............................
Great points but this year, TM is closed and Reds is a maybe, with the road open Friday - Sunday. Hopefully by June, we'll get clarity on the Reds option....
Also, when are you either hoping the bridge will be fixed or that you can cross the river safely?
Hi there ... great question. I'm hoping to cross safely in late August. I'll check with SOBO hikers to see about taking the Andrew Skurka options if needed.
What are your plans resulting from the removal and possible re-build of South Fork San Joaquin River bridge?
either cross or go up and over if that looks reasonable.
go cross country from Evo Valley to above destroyed bridge.........by this time there has to be a trail.....
Don't be so rigid dude............
Why is it bothering you that he’s a planner? What exactly is this negative comment for? Everyone is different and it’s ok. He mentioned what he was going to discuss in the beginning (which is what planners and prepared people do) yet you listened anyway hoping you’d learn something! 🙄
