Today is April 3rd, 2019. Lou Natale, the composer of this piece passed away 4 days ago in Toronto. I was his assistant at the time when he wrote this theme. I remember that he was very excited when he read the script. He was intent on hitting it out of the park. It had to be written on a really tight timeline. I think we had maybe 3-4 days and we had to present it on the following Monday. I remember coming in on the Saturday and was surprised that the studio was being used because he didn’t always come in on the weekends. In fact, he was kind enough to let me used the studio for the weekend so that I could write & pitch my own theme - that was pretty generous of him and a learning experience for me. He was always cracking smart quips and I remember him saying that he thought most of it up after his kids had gone to bed, walking back and forth on his deck, singing into his dictaphone. He said “The neighbors must have been going, “well, Natale’s at it again””. Even in its infancy that theme sounded great - even better than it sounds here, and when the producers came over to hear it, they absolutely loved it at first listen. I’m really glad people on this thread appreciate it. Lou was a truly amazing composer, an infectiously likeable person and most of all, a great teacher to me.
Thank you for sharing this memory with us. I remember almost nothing about this show but I still hum this tune often. It is a great piece that has outlived its purpose.
