    I've never heard anyone else besides Bette Davis refer to him as "litte Ronnie Reagan". In fact, Reagan was far from little while Bette was a tiny woman. He towered over her. She was on the opposite side of the political aisle (liberal Democrat) which no doubt affected her view of Pres. Reagan.

He never made a disparaging comment about Bette Davis, that wasn't his style. He was very respectful of his former actor colleagues and was also very conscious of his words being used against him. Reagan had to have some popularity in Hollyweird, since he was elected head of the Screen Actors Guild for several terms. Bette plays the old Hollyweird game of dismissing RR, because his politics were very unpopular with Hollyweirdians from the early 60s. Of course, he was very popular politically with the great unwashed, the American people, who Hollyweirdians despise. Then Bette turns around in 1988 and sees that RR is concluding a successful presidency. Also, RR treats her well at the Kennedy Center, and suddenly Bette is much more complimentary. It's very shallow of Bette, she's playing to the Hollyweird peanut gallery, due to politics, and shifts when it's in her interest. I much prefer her disinterested views on film acting, directors, producers, the Hollyweird studio system, etc. when she was on top of the game. Her political sniping is predictable, pedestrian and self serving.

    • @bowtieguy377
      @bowtieguy377 Год назад +1

      Bette in other interviews admitted she underestimated him and there were parts at least of what he did as President that impressed her. RR always had to deal with being underestimated in both Hollywood and D.C. but he always came out on top. As an actor, he was the lead in over 50 feature films and some did quite good at the box office. He did not have great range but most of his films did not require that. He also was host (and often actor) for 8 Years on the top rated GE Theatre TV Show that Bette made appearances on. RR received a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1961, well prior to becoming Governor of CA. Not a bad 1st career really. You simply cannot last in Hollywood (it is a business after all) for more than a quarter of a century without at least some talent. He had to pass a screen test as a complete unknown and then was a long-term contract player at Warner Bros. just like Bette was,. Even if he was not her caliber in terms of acting (how many were!) he did what he had to do to survive out there. Yes, the many actors in Hollywood elected him multiple times as SAG President to represent their interests, which says a lot.

      @@bowtieguy377 Many astute film critics now recognize Kings Row as one of the top films of the 1940s. Reagan was a better actor than he was given credit for. In recent years, I've seen much better notice of some of his films that fall into the film noir category.

    • @bowtieguy377
      @bowtieguy377 Год назад +1

      @@michaelm6948 Agreed! I am a history buff and old movie buff so RR fits into both of those categories nicely. Famed Director Martin Scorsese has worked in Film preservation projects on "Storm Warning", RR's 1949 KKK film Noir. Also, back in the 1940's, Oscar Winning Director John Huston wanted Reagan for a key support role (Cody) in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre", a Bogart Classic. However, his boss Jack Warner insisted Reagan do "The Voice of the Turtle" since light romantic comedies were his probably strongest suit overall as an Actor. I have seen most of Reagan's films and my favorites include that one (Voice of The Turtle) "The Hasty Heart", "Tennessee's Partner", "Kings Row" "Juke Girl", "Desperate Journey" and a few others. The best thing to do to be objective is to go back and read the reviews he received from critics while he was an actor for many years and not in retrospect with politics clouding the issue. His reviews were generally good. I think he did some of his best acting on "GE Theatre" TV episodes where he did a variety of roles as by then, he had real clout.

    It sure demonstrates how talk shows hardly ever bothered to find an original line of questioning. The same thing over and over and over. They'd rather know exactly what sound-bite they were going to get than risk anything uncharted.

    • @johnn.5033
      @johnn.5033 6 лет назад +2

      It was a little harder to keep track of past questions asked back then. They didn't have the resource of youtube to scan over past interviews and see what line of questions had been asked to her before. Also, interviews with certain stars were a much bigger deal back then. People would only be able to see Bette Davis on tv once every few years so when they did have her on, they probably asked her questions that most people probably didn't know about her.

    • @ozvoyager
      @ozvoyager 6 лет назад +7

      Nonsense. All of those interviewers still had access to newspaper libraries, with press cuttings stretching back over decades. They still went for the obvious. Most also had access to video libraries, with most of the significant previous interviews of any stars. Sure, it's easier for the everyday punter to access things via the internet today; but these were not everyday punters with no access to archives.

    • @venividi8523

      @@ozvoyager Think it relates more to our obsession with presidents than anything. Bette Davis getting asked about Ronald Reagan is similar to Macaulay Culkin getting asked about Donald Trump, the question isn't focused on Davis or Culkin since they hardly knew Reagan or Trump but the interviewers just want to get them to say some headline catching thing about the president.

    • @ekscentar1

      I think you are all wrong. Try to remember if in the last 30 years you have seen such old guests invited to any talk show? There is a reason why everyone has abandoned that practice, and the reason is dementia of old people. It is completely normal for later years, but most people despise it because we have been living for a long time in a culture of eternal youth where being old is the same as being dead. Dementia also manifests itself in the constant repetition of the same stories. If you invite a star like this as a guest, you have to do everything so that such a star wouldn't be embarrassed. If the star is very old, then you can only ask her what you are sure she will know how to answer. So from the outside it still seems like everything is fine with that star. And why is it not done anymore nowadays? Because of sponsors who want to sell their products. And sex and youth sell products better than old age, dementia and same, old stories. In addition, young people are better consumers, and they are not interested in old people. It's sad, but it's true. And nowadays it would also spread like a fire if the guest kept saying the same thing in all talk shows. Everyone wants to keep their dignity even in very old age, so they wouldn't even respond to an invitation to a talk show. You yourself must have noticed how once great stars are mocked as soon as they get a little older. This is not accidental, it is how they are pushed out of the media space. All for the sake and wishes of the sponsors.

    • @ozvoyager
      @ozvoyager Год назад +1

      @@ekscentar1 There may well be a lot of ageism in TV today. However, it's also true that talk shows can't get enough of Judi Dench, Miriam Margolyes, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren and Billy Crystal - all of them older now than most of those Hollywood veterans ever got to be. It actually amazes me that they'll still have on someone like Robert de Niro (79), who may still have all his faculties but has never, ever said anything remotely interesting in an interview. He may be the most boring tv talk show guest in history. So age seems not to be any kind of barrier.
