I've never really understood all of the flack for Marco Polo's first season. I watched all ten episodes and absolutely loved every second. The pacing was solid, the characters were all easy to invest in (especially Mei Lin and Kublai), the cinematography was downright gorgeous to look at, etc.
Personally I love this show. I mean a high budget historical production not based in Europe, I never thought I’d see the day. I honestly just think that all the edgy, trendy people/critics dislike the show simply because it’s not Game of Thrones. Just because there are swords in it, they expected the story detail, and character development of several seasons of GOT in the inaugural Marco Polo season. Benedict Wong as Kublai is a superb actor!
Should I start to series? Can you explain it a bit
The thing about this show is that it is so weird. It's a drama but it has crazy over the top martial arts fights like in a Jackie Chan movie. They try to be kind of accurate to the histrical background but also make weird decisions that take you out of the world. For instance everyone speaks english in this show which feels wrong but is okay (I would have prefered the way Netflix did Narcos). But also the extras in the scenes don't speak english but there native language which is just super weird. You have the characters talking in english in the forground but in the background people passing by are talking in their own language. It doesn't make any sense. If you are going to let every country speak the same language ALL of them should speak it.
Beside this I also think they had some pacing issues. It starts really slow and doesn't really becomes interesting until halfway through.
But that being said: It's litteraly the most beautiful show on TV right now. It even looks better than Game of Thrones.

Yes, I do agree that the first four episodes of so go a bit slow. I think the showrunners were still kind of discovering what kind of show they wanted Marco Polo to be. As it is in a setting most westerners are unfamiliar with, they used somewhat out of place, over the top martial arts as a way to keep the average viewer entertained. After that point though I believe what saved the season was their decision to deemphasize Marco, and make the show more of an ensemble cast. In truth the show should really be called Kublai. Benedict Wong brings so much gravitas to his role that, the viewer can’t help but be more interested in him. As for the English, I sort of agree with their choice. The truth is that to get the amount of viewers needed to sustain such a high budget show, you need the average viewer who doesn’t like subtitles. What they should do, and kind of what they did, was have English represent conversation between people who speak the same language. So Mongols speak English to other Mongols, Chinese speak Chinese to other Chinese, but require a translation when communicating with each other.
I love that this show has a 24% reviewer score on Rotten Tomatoes, but a 93% audience score. It's rare you see such a divide. The show is fantastic.

I have no idea why critics buried that show. It's one of the best series I've ever seen

surprisingly amazing show. treats the audience as intelligent, paced so quickly too its refreshing. cant wait for season 2!

I think that Marco Polo could survive past season 2, as long as they have learned from their mistakes in season 1. Simply less Marco, more Kublai. Less romance, more court intrigue and politics. As it is, this show survived through the sheer will power of the fans.

It's going to be very awkward having Hundred Eyes fighting against Michelle Yeoh's character, since they seem to be old allies...I mean, how do you explain that? Hundred Eyes: "Hey, I know he destroyed our temple, captured me, imprisoned me, blinded me with snake venom, forced me to teach his men our secret martial arts, and sends me on suicide missions, but he's not all bad." Michelle Yeoh: "Every bit of that is bad! How can you even say that?! Hundred Eyes: "...he gives me wine?"

The show was ok... it was more like watching porn on ecstasy until almost the end of the season. Besides that.. feel like it was missing alot of things. And they barely journey off
