PATCHING & STAINING CRACKED CONCRETE | Back Porch DIY Reno: Episode 3

  • My parents' new home has a back porch concrete slab full of big cracks! This was my first time patching concrete, so I tested out two different fillers to see which one worked best. I also endured my villain origin story: finding the correct color of stain for the slab. It was a JOURNEY, and one I hope not to relive again any time soon!

Ughhh it's the worst!! This has happened to me a few times with paint undertones before, but never color discrepancies this wild 🙈 I'll be happy not to see a can of concrete stain for a long time!

Idk if you tried it off camera or not, but I have learned the very hard way when swatching colors to A L W A Y S go for the 2nd and even at times a 3rd coat to see the color in its truest and most opaque finish.
I was tasked with painting a cranberry door to match the cranberry shutters and the first (and even 2nd!) coat were so *horrendous* in color payout that I thought my order was botched. I would go on to 2 different stores to have 2 different gallons of the same color mixed and all produced the same wretched pink. It wasn’t until morbid curiosity took over that I realized the 3rd coat was some kind of sorcery. It transcended time and space and became _the color on the chip_ and I would *never* have believed it based on the undertones. That’s my color rant, lol.
So glad you did find a color that worked-it looks warm and professional and fabulous!!! 👏🏻

Came across one of your shorts in my feed. I am now a new subscriber! The short about actually “living” in your home really got me. I know of so many people that only think about resale value and not actually living like they would like to live. Good One!

LOL! I wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t mentioned it as I’m color blind. In the end they all looked the same to me 😊

When my friend wanted to do her driveway into a dining/patio/gathering place, her driveway was so cracked and ugly, we didn't know if anything could be done to help it. So we went to Lowe's and starting looking at colors. Wouldn't you know, in the return markdowns there had to be 8 different cement stains. We bought them all. We taped off as though it was going to be different shaped stones. Her husband thought I was nuts talking her into this project. When he went up to the house and looked down, he had to come back down to tell us it looked beautiful and looked like real stone. The next day, he was helping us. Try that next time.

I liked the improvement! That was hard work for sure. Wondered if you had considered floating the whole surface with a leveling cement and the covering that ?

Huge improvement. You have a lot more patience than I have. I would have been so upset over the color difference especially after so many times of trying to get it right. It does look so much better to have the cracks filled in. Good to know your opinion of the all the products used in this video, nice to have an honest opinion from someone trusted. Thank you.

Thank you! It takes a lot to upset me, but I was NOT a happy camper during this project 😆 especially because we’re currently in a heat wave!

Oooh I would have been so angry! All that time, all that money grrrr🤨
Your patience definitely paid off though. It looks great!🌟

You must have spent a fortune on all of that concrete stain. 😱 I’m glad you didn’t “give in” to a color you were not happy with. I’d like to suggest a couple things; hopefully you don’t mind…. I suggest with love ❤️ #1 You can never go by what a color swatch looks like online. I have made this mistake sooooo many times that I finally learned my lesson on that one. You need to look at the swatch samples in store, not online, to get a better idea of the color. Also, the swatches in store don’t always look like what you expect once applied and put on the floor, wall, etc. #2 Getting a small mixed sample doesn’t always turn out the same color as the large gallon + size. You kind of know that since you did indeed mix both gallons together before painting… There is ALWAYS a slight difference in color when they get mixed. I personally don’t understand WHY but smart move on your part! 👏 👏 #3 Colors, Undertones, etc…. I normally do not recommend other channels on someone else’s channel as some may perceive it to be ‘rude’. However, I am going to suggest a great channel if you want to learn more about colors, undertones, etc…. @thepaintpeople is a great one to check out. I hope that helps. 😊 You are doing such an amazing job! Keep up the great work! Best wishes and I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos. 👍

I bought a greige wall paint that somehow also ended up looking purple! Surprising and frustrating and now I need to repaint because that is not what I am going for

Ugh yes, it's so frustrating! I wish paint companies disclosed the undertones of their paints, especially for lighter colors. It's so hard to tell just from looking at a screen or a small swatch.

Thought you were using the putty knife to flatten down the surface. Oof! Appreciate that you share the successes, obstacles, and the lessons learned from mistakes along the way because in life this is what helps all of us learn. Much respect for tell the whole story, not just the success. It speaks to your character
I'm so sorry for all the added expense (and time) you had to go through. That was a whole lotta "lipstick" you had to apply. Glad you have the funds to cover it all

I’m glad that this wasn’t the first video I had watched of yours. Because I was like why couldn’t she go to the store and look at the sample. You aggravated my soul with the waste.

With all those layers of paint, you almost made a “untextured” concrete hahaha but very nice job.
