I tried Proper Twelve before I knew anything about the whiskey or McGregor. Ended up using it for a mixer and it was still tough to finish the bottle. It’s a good $18 whiskey that sells for $29 in Ohio. With Jameson, Powers Gold, Paddy’s, and Tully all selling for less, I’ll never buy it again.

    Hi Eric
I gained a lot of respect for you 💯 after the night you joined sam, who got plastered and passed out. I know a gentleman when I see one, you stayed to almost the end until she passed out for a while, and you signed off, great you -tuber,I was already a subscriber, but now I watch every single video. I have a lot of respect for you Sir 💯 I think she said they had lost a lot of subscribers, and others did too, but not me. I think the marketing of P12 has definitely helped its popularity, but it has a tough road ahead if it wants to compete with Jameson. There's a reason why it's king of the budget Irish. I got into whiskey through Jameson because when someone suggested sipping instead of shooting like I would a rum, I was shocked that a spirit could actually be enjoyed slowly and by itself, not in a cocktail. Its still an enjoyable go to after a more expensive dram. However I'm going to really shake things up and say my favorite budget Irish is actually Tullamore Dew.
Great video as always Mr. Eric. Look forward to more!

I’m no expert, however I am a bit of an alcoholic. Not a fancy whiskey snob. These are two of my favorites. I must say Jame is slightly sweeter, and I’ve NEVERtasted vanilla in Jameson. Proper is very drinkable and smooth in my taste and not as sweet with a strong vanilla note.

Thanks for your opinion on this match up. I was always wondering what you might think about it, as I have seen a few videos going both ways on the two whiskeys, and listened to McGregor say Proper 12 was better. I haven't tried them side by side, but if I do, I would like to do it blind. One of the videos that I saw about Proper 12 stated the same thing that you said about it, could use some aging. I would still like to know how to get you things too? Thanks again Erik!!!🤘

Did an Irish blind tasting. This was in a line up with Sexton, Red Spot, Hyde No 5 and a sneaky Chivas XV.
I actually disliked the Red Spot and Picked the proper Twelve as my favorite for the evening followed closely by Chivas XV and Hyde no 5.
I think knowing what it is has a pretty big impact. While most picked Chivas as their favourite, proper Twelve was often a close second. A few did pick Red Spot but it wasn't as clear cut as you'd have thought.
I personally felt the hyde no 5 was the better daily drink (has a slight similar note to Clynelish) but the richness and complexity of Chivas and Proper Twelve were surprising. Maybe on a different night things would have been different but I revisited the Red Spot and while it's ok it is harsh and has a strong vanilla/banana note which makes it a decidingly one note whisky for me. In terms of what I'd reach for it would be Proper Twelve it is just an excellent value proposition... Having also had Jamesons when out, I can't say I enjoyed it as much but it did deliver a clearer apple note. In all fairness it was my go to in uni when I knew nothing about whisky.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies OK good sir! I'll not interfere with a man's education even if it means studying the addition of Mudd to otherwise wonderful whiskey. Say additionally Canada and Montana have collaborated on a whiskey called "the devils brigade" it is comprised in content to match force breakdown at the time which was 60 % Americans and 40% Canadians so the juice is bottled the same at 42 abv which is an omage to the v42 dagger that was issued to them. It is argued the devils brigade was the first ever special forces unit in the world a certainly the first in the western hemisphere. The hooch is being released in separate batches individually whilst each batch is representative of an individual team member. The bourbon is made and bottled at wiles's distilleries in ennis Mt. I am unsure of the Canadian portion but by my pallette I think it's the crown. Anyhow it's really good stuff for its budget range and the history of it and behind it would make for a great video for someone of your quality to do, and if you do let me know, can't find a bottle also let me know and I'll arrange it for you. Tastes are subjective, so take it with a grain of salt. In my opinion, Proper 12 has a lot more going on in the flavor department, and the price keeps it as my daily work horse. Side by side, the Jameson tastes more watered down. Islay Scotches are my absolute favorite, but I can’t afford to come home, turn up the radio and smash a bottle of Ardveg or Laphroig.

Sounds like the Proper 12 is improving... it's gone from "actively offensive" to "meh" When I tried Proper 12 my initial thought was it was horrible, but I could see that it might turn into something at least decent given more time to age. Sounds like it's on that path, at least.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Fair enough. I didn't really have a perspective on him, myself. I am interested to see what it turns into in a couple more years. Seems likely that the first batches went out the door right at 3 years to even get on the market, so if they're slowly holding some barrels back to mix in and get some more age on, it does seem to have some potential to me.

There is a temptation to allow the personality and misbehavior of Conor McGregor to become a distraction and allow one's negative opinion of him affect your perception of the whiskey. I tried VERY hard to ignore him and only mention him in brief and just focus on the whiskey. I think some previous bottlings may have been rushed to market in order to take advantage of the publicity of his fight with Mayweather. So, later releases might be a little better. But, generally I agree with others that there are many better whiskies on the market in the same price range.
