That moment you realise that Ratatouille, a film made 14 years ago, has more diversity in the bloody kitchen staff than this entire show does in it's main cast.
Another reason to love that MASTERPIECE.
Ratatouille is amazing. It’s a show about art (culinary art, but still art) created by artists. It’s about passion and love, but the kind of love that one has for their work. It’s clearly done with an understanding of how culinary arts works, and it’s so good. I can talk for hours.

It honestly saddens me how many Americans actually think they need to "improve" other countries. I'm Brazilian and was once told my country needed to watch more "good American content", as if the fact that most Brazilians themselves think that anything produced in Brazil is shit and that everything from America is the gold standard wasn't enough for them.
America needs to improve on everything.

The neutral gender in language is specifically tied with non-binary gender identities; as some languages have exclusively binary (male/female) pronouns, there's this debate around including neutral gender pronouns and suffixes for those who identify as neither he nor she. It's a valid discussion that, if done right, will only enrich the language. Even if this debate became mainstream in English-speaking countries first, it's not an English-speaking issue.
Also, gender diversity isn't a Western thing. Westerners aren't the only humans to show a diversity of identities, just as Asians or Africans or Latinxs aren't just masculine men or feminine women. So your suggestion that "a person in Pakistan" won't care about that is kinda belittling.

The whole premise could be funny, satirical, and insightful as we follow Emily's growth from a cocky, know-all, fish-out-of-water, young American into a mature, socially adaptable, properly-confident young woman. Gentle digs at the follies of American and French cultures, similarities and differences learned and celebrated, and so many other potential storylines.
I’m a grad student and rarely watch things that can’t be played in the corner of a computer monitor these days, but I'd totally watch that. Why can’t we have nice things anymore?
That sounds both entertaining and knowledgeable! This show is something I would watch…not this tire fire.
They should have given her a similar character development as Poppy from Wild Child. Sure, it is a cliche but it would be better than the show in its current state

Your ideas sound boring as hell to me! Produce a show like that and it would pulled of air after a few episodes because of low viewing figures. Emily is marvellous escapism. It's not designed to be "authentic" . For example, they play a lot of French pop songs in the background but surely the French prefer American/UK pop music OR their take on that dreadfully tasteless "AMERICAN" rap music.
You know the sad thing is, is that Madeline; a children's cartoon show that takes place in france in the *1920's* had more diversity in it than the entire first season of Emily in Paris 😑

I'm from Spain so Emily's attitude of "y'all need the American perspective" felt extremely entitled to me. Everyone, no matter where they live, has been fed American entertainment more than entertainment from any other foreign country, sometimes more than their own country's. And the way they played it off as if the US is more "progressive" than France, was pretty hilarious.
I feel ya there man. My home country (The Philippines) is obssed with American Media, to the point that a lot of local movies and music gets ignored unless you are really into it.
Don't even get me started on Korean entertainment taking over as well.

Radios must play at least 40% of music in french (so french speaking and singing artists, be they from Quebec, France, Belgium or french-speaking African countries) and at least half of those 40% must be less than 6 months old to help younger artists compete in ad-based environments with big american dollars that pay for their air-time.

We have another problem, mainly from the local music and movie scene. Merely focusing on replicating western blocbusters or covering cliche topics that revolves around heartbreak or hopless romantic tropes. This is what the mainstream looks like over here. Therefore, you could just imagine on how independent movie makers or musicians have it rough for creating something outside the mainstream's interest. Mostly ignored, no matter how great the art is.
Anyway, what I am saying is. Any local art that gives food for thought or reflects on how cruel or systematically broken my country, is largely ignored due how the western media is heavily promoted over here. Local art = garbage or cheap version of Western media or art. Sadly. Even though we have a lot of talented independent artist promoting topics that matters.

It does really suck how American franchises also start taking over local businesses.
I'm, personally, not as bothered about the rise of Korean entertainment. It mainly feels like "fresh air" after getting used to everything being American or British. But I don't know how that's being experienced in your country.
As an Australian, we get so much American media shoved down our throats. Streaming platforms like Netflix and social media have only made it worse. The only films that have been filmed here recently are because our v*rus situation has been better. I don't hate the US or anything, but it's just too much sometimes. I feel like the rest of the world has to learn so much about the US through the media while they remain ignorant.
It's the same with music. An artist might get considerable recognition locally, but there's an air that they 'haven't really made it' unless they move to LA. Especially in this day and age, you shouldn't have to move anywhere to have success. I guess the only thing we can do is support local media and musicians😕

I think the show was nominated because it was so popular, even though it is beyond cheesy. The (majority young, white) people spoke.... The Golden Globes wants people to actually watch them, so if a popular show in nominated even though it isn't that good, they're guaranteed more viewers.

As upset as I am about Mindhunters cancellation, wasn't it ultimately David Fincher's decision? I remember reading that it was difficult for him to juggle Mindhunter and other projects he was working on. He also mentioned that the show wasn't pulling in enough viewership to justify the cost of production. Such a shame though because it's one of my favourite shows.

Why are people complaining about Netflix renewing shitty shows when the real question is WHY are so MANY watching them?? like come on Netflix is just another business they don't care to police the shows, corporations just care about the money this isn't a new thing. (ofc they are responsible for spreading/inciting ignorance and racism with such shows, but the onus is on us to get them to stop with actual action. Not watching shit shows is a start.)
Netflix is very specific with what it renews as well. Even with moderate viewership it won’t always renew and cult followings dont factor in either. It’s why shit like Emily in Paris, 13 Reasons why, and Big Mouth get renewed, hate watching.
Yea ok, the backlash for Cuties was beyond palpable and they didn’t budge. Seems to me that they are beyond not caring to “police the shows” and are actually a bit sh!t; especially with them now attempting to “crackdown” on people sharing accounts with family during a pandemic where many are strapped for cash; as if Netflix is hard up for money. 🙃
Unfortunately I didn’t know about any of the hate towards this show before watching it, Netflix was recommending it to me so hard lol. So i clicked and regretted even starting it. I think I got 6 episodes in? But that’s still enough for Netflix to deem it as one of my interests...
Agreed. I don't subscribe to these streaming channels despite how much content I could miss. I learned a long time ago to seek the content I really wanted on my own. And at my age there's no longer a rush to watch the latest thing.

I remember a time when Netflix was the place I turned to to enjoy films and shows that diverged from mainstream media. Indie or niche stories that were not necessary made for mass consumption.
They used to have the best indie films. Now it's pretty commercial. Thank god for Dark which was quirky and German and knew when to quit.

Ok. As someone who grew up in LA and was "in the industry" for a while, I can tell you that this isn't just the HFPA. The Oscars and Emmys run like this, too. The rules officially state that you can't give gifts to academy members in order to sway their opinion, but there's a loophole that absolves this in the "swag", the term for goodies you get in official merchandise to hype up a movie.
When you provide the free tickets to screen the film, you can "gift" it with pretty much whatever you want, as long as it's relevant to the film. So say if the movie is based in Paris, you can gift ridiculously expensive vintage French wine or a Louis Vuitton bag worth tens of thousands of dollars, and call it "swag". It's not a bribe, silly, it's just promotional material! 🙄

If it was a guy accidentally sleeping with an underaged girl, it would never be seen as a quirky joke. People would be outraged. You wouldn't be able to put it in a show and still want the audience to root for the guy in the end getting together with his real love interest. It's sickening and wrong!

I don’t necessarily disagree that there is a gendered double standard in how people reacted to this, but I can actually think of a few instances in tv/movies where a man accidentally (or not accidentally) sleeping with an underaged girl is treated as a quirky joke. For example in The Office, Andy is shown to unwittingly be in a relationship with a teenager in high school. There’s also Mean Girls where that coach is shown sleeping with the female students. And, while it isn’t treated as a joke, there are countless examples of underaged girls being in romanticized sexual relationships with their adult male teachers in teen dramas. I think that that romanticization trivializes the abuse going on at least as much as treating it like a joke, and it is unfortunately very common. It’s messed up all around. I just wish people would recognize it as problematic regardless of the genders involved.
@@tatertots43 I do think there is a difference, because in Mean Girls for example the teacher is called out for it. It is not treated as totally normal and not weird at all by everyone around him. If I remember correctly it is described as kind of gross and inappropriate.
The office I have only seen the British one, so I don’t really know what your referring to, but by the vibe of the show I can only imagine, that it would also be portrayed as a bad thing, that’s only “funny” because it happened accidentally.
In regard to romanticising relationships between students and teachers I cannot think of any movie or series, where that happens and it’s not portrayed as unethical and there’s mostly at least one character who thinks the teacher is awful for it.
Of course that doesn’t make it ok and I don’t like it either. I just think that with Emily in Paris it is way more extreme since no one is even bothered by the event. Emily is the only one who feels embarrassed by the incident and that only for a couple of minutes. Everyone else around her - even the parents and siblings of the boy - think it’s actually great and absolutely hilarious that they had sex. It’s just not really portrayed as a bad thing at all. Maybe I just don’t know but I know of no other scene in modern cinema where underaged female sex is this trivialised like this with no one calling it out within the movie or series.
Also mostly it’s either not the main character or not the “good” guy who sleeps with underaged people. It’s not the guy the shows want you to relate to and like. Emily is the one you’re supposed to like watching the show regardless that she had sex with an underaged boy. Her doing that and the nonchalant way she treats it are not even portrayed as a dark side of her character which she needs to work on. She’s just absolute great and likeable regardless. That’s really gross to me and I cannot think of any other series where that would be the case.
@@katringabrielle4672 I think in Emily in Paris they just think it is how people react to it because their is no age of consent. So I see the reactions of the people, more as a misunderstanding of how real French people would react, than a gender thing.
But it's true they have a thing for romanticizing that kind of relation in the show and that people would not be ok with it if it comes from a man. Like in episode 1, when the woman that was supposed to go in the first place instead of Emily, says that she was excited because French boys are into older women. If the gender were reversed, it would have never been allowed in the script.

For the series there is “Plan coeur” and “Dix pour cents” they are pretty accurate about the French culture. For the movies there is “Le fabuleux destin d’Amelie Poulain” et “la belle et la bête” which is the French version of the beauty and the beast but with really famous French cast

THANK YOU ! I was sick of seing all these reels and pictures of people trying to mimique that style. It's chaotic. It doesn't make any sense with the character's financial means either. And when she wore Audrey Hepburn's famous headpiece at the opera, I was just mad. The only thing that makes sense is that her style didn't get any better as her personality stayed exactly her same shitty self. (I hope I didn't make any mistake, I'm French)

Either they use it as a soft reboot and cross fingers that people forgive them for the first, or they double down on the first and it ends up being the next 13 Reasons Why. They're desperate for IP... They lost Friends and The Office, Stranger Things has 2 seasons to go, they lost their Marvel shows, their romcoms are all finishing their trilogies, and on top of all that, other streaming services are starting to overshadow them, mainly Disney+ and Amazon Prime. They'll hold on to Emily In Paris as long as it brings views unfortunately.

And yeah now I am aware how dangerous it is to romanticize the relationship in that film. The power dynamics, the unresolved trauma Vivian had probably undergone. In fact the original plot for the film was supposed to be much darker, dealing with class, prostitution, drugs etc. But the big wigs thought to instead spin it into a fairytale happy ending for profit. As a European living in Midwest America, let me tell you - life is better in countries in Eastern Europe than in Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska or any other flyover state. There's a handful of states in the US where you can actually enjoy life, but you need to work your ass off to be able to live above poverty. When I say "life is better" I mean, more fulfilled and culturally richer. Nothing can replace a strong sense of culture and history. Nothing. And USA has none of that. You wanna see a show about a hopeful and inspiring character who takes a job that she is ill suited for, and is surrounded by people who hold her in contempt? Watch Ugly Betty. That show came out years before Emily In Paris. It centers around a latin american family, with the main character Betty who has worked hard her whole life with zero privileges. She takes a job at a fashion magazine even though she's dressed worse than Emily (though that's debatable). Although she is out of her element and is constantly pushed around, she stands her ground and never loses hope. She is actually a good person with principles and integrity, unlike Emily, who actually gets called out if she does do something bad. Most importantly Ugly Betty was FUNNIER than Emily In Paris. Seriously just watch Mark and Amanda, they are you and your bestie. Seriously watch Ugly Betty.

This claim has been debunked for years but it's always great to see it pop up again with american nationalists.
The leaflets dropped over Japan never warned of any nuclear strike, they only mentioned the regular firebombing that has been going on for months before the leaflets were dropped. Hiroshima was never warned of any attack, not even in leaflets dropped over other cities, specifically by the US military to avoid any intercept mission of the nuclear-bomb carrying bombers. That's why they could go over the city, drop the bomb and fly back without any escort, without ever meeting a single japanese plane (despite the japanese army keeping thousands of them ready for the defense of the main island).
The population is OTHER cities had been warned of firebombing attacks before and had left the cities on foot, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were NOT warned on purpose to maximize the casualties done by the nuclear bombs, to scare the population into rebelling against the imperial regime. It's all documented in US archives, it was a terror bombing plan from start to finish.
Also, neither of these cities had a significant military presence, especially not in the center where the bombs were dropped. The regular bombing campaigns were already taking care of the military targets (factories, bases and logistical hubs), the nuclear bombing was deliberately chosen as a terror strike against the civilian population.
That's why it terrified the other nations and none actually used their nuclear weapons yet: not even Pakistan against India, not even Soviet Russia against its enemies, not even China against Vietnam or South Korea. The horror of the two american nuclear strikes on civilians was so awful that even dictators and authoritarian regime were disgusted.

What have I learned from this video? There is a movie or series called “I may destroy you” and I shout go watch it asap
It's genuinely so good. Do read up on it first because it deals with some really heavy stuff and it pulls no punches so it can be difficult for a lot of people to watch especially if they've had experiences of sexual assault and the social fall out that comes afterwards but it's an incredible show.
It's just so much better that there's no comparison. Nominating Emily in Paris over that is just...so dumb and really makes you wonder how out of touch the HFPA really is.

I 100% agree with everything you said about Emily in Paris and how messed up award shows are nowadays. However in general I like the idea of having prestigious award shows. Especially if you look at big budget movies, producers don’t like to take many risks anymore. But award shows are generally speaking one of the last reason to take a bit more risks every once in a while in order of winning an award. Obviously they’re a lot of things that need to be fixed, but I still believe that award shows should be seen as an opportunity if done right

Because people are dumb and watch low IQ shows like Riverdale. Give them some hot guys/girls in a ridiculous setting, then the show becomes a hit.
It's all about budget and revenue. This show probably cost very little to make and with all the negative press, a lot of people are going to end up checking it out, driving up the views.
@Ryan Akwar it may not be, but have you noticed all the Riverdale clones on netflix? Pretty little things, that bad winx remake, the order, and a bunch of shows with hot "teens" (late 30 years old actors) and a dark theme with a mysterious backstory or some murder mystery. It's full of these awful shows with no substance.
And that's why Disney +, Amazon, hulu, showmax are slowly overtaking it

As a big fan of Lily Collins that upsets me so much because I know for sure that she read the script and knew what kind of racist, xenophobic and overall boring show she was getting herself into and still decided to take the role. Really makes me wonder how many other stars that I like would sell themselves out and promote such problematic shit.

@@barry2349 I think some producers do - many actors get themselves listed as "producers" when I think what that really means is that they are buying some creative control. Pretty sure multiple people have said that in interviews.
I stopped watching award shows about 5 years ago, and I used to be obsessed with them. I'm seriously glad I did, because the more distance I have from them, the more I realize how meaningless they are.

I don't watch the Golden Globes because they pick shitty films over indie films every time, not because of some political agenda. Also, who wants to sit through 3 hours of jokes and speeches today? I would rather see who won and watch the speeches for the ones I like after the show. Also, the people who win the film category are very certain to win at the Oscars.

This is exactly what happened with THE TOURIST and BURLESQUE in 2010. Two badly reviewed box office bombs that got Best Picture nominations at the Globes, after which it was discovered that the studio, Sony, had treated HPFA voters "by flying them to Las Vegas, putting them up in luxury hotels, covering all meals, and even setting up a nice, intimate private concert with none other than Cher herself." There was a big controversy, no consequences and then everyone just...forgot. And for some reason Hollywood continued to take the Globes seriously the next year and so forth. So I'm dubious anything will change this year either.
The tourist nomination is what made me realized these awards were rigged. And Ricky Gervais trashed that movie while he hosted, which was slightly worth it

Such as pointing out that the white racist writers/creators make racist jokes and somehow thinks it's acceptable because they have made them come out of the mouth of someone "criticising" her own culture - this being the Chinese character (played by a Korean character).

Between the two kinds of Hollywood Americana tropes, I honestly have a hard time deciding which is worse: the male version of 'American military might is always at least well-intentioned or is needed to save the world', or the female version of 'the world is a bauble that white American young women are entitled to play with'. As far as I'm aware, literally nobody else's cinema have these ideas at all, let alone so frequently that they're cliche.
Most other countries tend to be less patriotic flag waving and more population life oriented. Centering your movies on characters that come from lower-income to middle-class households tends to make for more tame scenarios, prone to reflection rather than distraction. Some other directors have a more artistic approach with an overarching theme to their work. There are some american movies that go into that, but most block-busters (and everything derived from the formula, series included) are made to distract from life as an end all be all. And block busters are the movies that have the dollars to be seen.
Can we also talk about how the golden globes nominated sia’s super ableist movie “music” just goes to show how winning a golden globe doesn’t really mean anything

There's one point that's crucial about all this, neither the Hollywood Foreing Press nor The Academy really reward quality content. The sooner we understand that, the sooner we'll realize that those awards are nothing more than Hollywood congratulating themselves for the great job they did, all those awards are a joke.
