  • I am not an expert Thereminist, and I certainly don’t have perfect pitch, but I’ve found this way of thinking about Moog etherwave Theremin tuning helpful. I think of the pitch knob making a SMALLER interval in a given space when I turn it left (CCW), and a BIGGER interval when I turn it right (CW). (Obviously you could use a tuner to identify pitches if that helps.) The goal is to tune a particular interval to fit a particular hand position that you can easily repeat. I like to match the descending 4th interval to a hand movement where the fingers of the OK sign begin extended toward the antenna and then close to make an O. If the interval I hear from that hand movement is bigger than a 4th, I turn the pitch knob LEFT, to make that interval SMALLER (and vice versa). In this video I’m playing by ear and I seem to have arbitrarily selected Ab as “Do.” (Sorry bout that! If you were playing in C, the descending 4th would be G.) My (imperfect!) technique is informed by Carolina Eyck and Lydia Kavina, both of whom are excellent Thereminists and educators who I would highly recommend. Hope this is helpful to Theremin beginners! (Note: I casually made this video for a friend whose Theremin David had just repaired, and I repeatedly say extension module, when I think the word is expansion module. Oops, sorry.)
