WHAT IS "THING INSIDE THE BOX"?
Thomann is going to send me a mystery box every month and challenge me with whatever’s inside. It could be an instrument, new equipment or anything else music related.
I’m going to take you along with me and capture my progress each and every day and if there’s anything else exciting happening that week, you’ll get to see that as well.
I will then incorporate the instrument/equipment etc. into one of my videos where I sing and play the guitar, which you'll get to see two weeks after the first challenge video goes up.

The theremin is one of the harder instruments to learn to play well. You were doing really well there at the end.
I am absolutely impressed - I know about Carolina Eyck and how extremely difficult it is to play the Theremin. To see you together with the professional player - amazing! And to see the outcome - totally impressed!

This is a Moog Theremini, not as hard to play as a real theremin, but it's still hard. The one you hear on Beach Boys' Good Vibrations is not a real theremin, but close enough. Check out YT channel for Dr Samuel Hoffman, the L.A. podiatrist who played an actual 1929 theremin on movie soundtracks in 1940's-50's. His playing on Capitol 78RPMs in late 1940's with Les Baxter is haunting, beautiful, sometimes whimsical. Peter Pringle is a modern theremin player who now owns Dr Hoffman's theremin & has several YT videos.
The theremin is like an instrument that you barely touch, it's cool.

Leon Theremin invented this using valves. Basically two oscillators, one for frequency and one for volume varied by hand capacitance depending how close your hands are to the antennas.
That s the coolest thing I've ever seen its feeling the music instead of playing it.

I got my theremini a week ago, and I find it easier to play than keyboard, and that comes from someone who played on keyboards ever since she crawled around in diapers!
I went guitar center and tested out a distortion pedal, which I've uploaded the video of on my channel, because I love blues, rock, and metal, yet am terrified of guitars. For me, theremin is more intuitive for me than even a keyboard. Having the the slides (glissando) helps me to establish which note to jump to, whereas on a keyboard, I'm limited to just the individual notes. It also feels more like the instrument is training me and guiding me where to go instead of the other way around. It feels more like a true connection to the instrument for me than any other I've tried.
I am also much better at playing via ear than keys or strings, too. Ask me to play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on a keyboard, I'd have no idea where to begin or what keys to press. Put a theremin in front of me and ask me to play that song, while I may be off key, I can mater it pretty fast
I honestly like the sound of the quarter tones in your performances at the end of the video though. So many times I like things a little out of tune whereas most people find it grating to the ear.

This was the best introduction to the theremin I’ve seen. From unboxing to setting it up to learning how to get notes, setting the pitch and providing a professional to see how it’s done right. I noticed your mic stand didn’t fit in the beginning and then later it did. What did you do to fix that? Thank you so much. Vinny
Re-watched this video and there were some points that I did disagree with to an extent. Personally, I'd argue *for* using the tuner to train your musical ear (visual, not the pitch correction!) because that can give you a visual cue as to whether or not you have the note. It can tell you if you're a few quarter notes flat or sharp. I'd personally recommend to use the tuner for that purpose until you can recognize when you're off or not. I'd also argue the pitch correction *is* helpful for beginners learning the theremin, despite what some say. It can be useful for training the fingers, AKA the muscle memory for the correct note, but I would say to *not rely on it.* What' I'd recommend is if you're not confident, use the pitch correction at max until you get the positions memorized, then gradually turn down the pitch correction until you can play without it at all. Everyone learns differently, so these features are not entirely useless or unnecessary.

Probably the greatest of the Theremin Masters is the young Carolina Eyke, she leaves Clara in the dust. She is the first and only one who figured out how to play it accurately, with a method similar but not the same as Clara, and with complete skill with her own devised method that is 100% accurate.
I remember seeing Leon Theremin on black and white t.v. waving his arms around. Find him on RUclips old t.v. shows.
As a guitar player, I probably would turn 180 degrees the Theremin. Maybe you could try this way, because I saw you were so confident when doing the guitar playing.

Hi Nicole. I loved your video. I was just searching for tutorials on the Theremin and found you. I set myself the challenge of learning the Theremin during the COVID-19 isolation period and, like you, find it really frustrating - although I am getting better! :-) I bought a Thermini as it is a good starting point. The hints you were given are really useful. My chosen first piece is the Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem because it is completely diatonic in G, and I love the Requiem. Nicole, if you haven't already discovered her, please direct your attention to Carolina Eyck of Germany. She is world renown, has played this strange instrument with symphony orchestras, and in short is amazing. She even has a system (that she created) and teaches....which I don't profess to understand, but certainly respect.

My late cousin-in-law, of RCA, became involved and tamed the Theremin (w-o the LCD and such of the Theremini.) Yes, I of course got it to produce some coarse sounds. His name was Howard Mossman. Theremin is best known for the intro to the original star trek. Thar wasn't singing in the lead. That was a Theremin.
What a great introduction and demonstration of playing theremin for the unsuspecting! I've been fascinated by this instrument for decades, though never took that step as they were always rather expensive for something that might reveal itself to be a frustrating dust collector! Now I'm a little bit inspired - once I've put some other projects behind me.

FemurDesign has an online Theremin, but attempts to play even the simplest of melodies can be quite frustrating.
Lydia Kavina's demonstration of the Theremini gives one hope that one could play this (thankfully designed) beginner's Theremin. Still, it's amazing to hear Clara Rockmore's restrained performances of Saint-Saëns' 'The Swan' and Ravel's 'Habanera'.

Danke für diese tolle und geduldige, aber sehr nachvollziehbare Beschreibung des Termins. Wir haben es gerade geliefert bekommen und mein Sohn möchte es austesten. Er spielt Keyboard und kreiert Musik am Computer und alles nach Gehöhr, deshalb wird ihm dein Video eine große Hilfe sein. It was before any other electronic musical instrument, invvented by 1919 in a russian mind. My favoreds one swiss musician band by Andreas Wollenweider also employs it by other like elektronic metál drums, - in really harmonious manner.

I love Americans and their spontaneity, everything is so simple for them! Even the theremin for them appeared shortly before the collapse of the US stock market in 1929, which implies that the inventor was an American. Naturally, why mention Russia, or even more so the USSR? Any source will say that this is an electronic musical instrument created in 1920 by the Soviet inventor Lev Sergeyevich Termen in Petrograd (St. Petersburg today). On the other hand, why would an ordinary American know that Lev Termen, as a specialist in radio engineering, was invited to work by Abram Ioffe, to measure the dielectric constant of gases at various pressures and temperatures. By the way, the electronic musical instrument invented by him was originally called an etherton (sound from the air, ether), was soon renamed in honor of the author and became known as a theremin.
