All very Channel 4 by the sounds of that document. The only time they did a big look back season was for the 25th anniversary which was fun and an eye opener for me. Growing up knowing it for quirky shows like the Big Breakfast and Gamesmaster, and a youthful, off the beaten track image, I did think that it was just a bit of hyperbole when people talked about the channel being shocking or out of the box, but the lookbacks they did showed some surprises which told me how it was genuinely shaking the landscape up and getting people talking, and getting people in trouble sometimes.
Channel 4, to use a current slogan, had always been "altogether different". It had CGI idents with bombastic orchestrals when everyone else was using models or 2D with a jolly jingle. It had an urban soap that made ITV's look tame and led the BBC to try to one up it with controversial subjects and mayhem. It opened on its first day with a game show instead of a launch party, as if it had already been on for years. While the BBC and ITV would show kids shows after school, it would show one of the most brain bustingly hard quizzes of them all. It has shows fronted by minorities, disabled people, hardly visible sections of society, and then runs a campaign saying "Complaints Welcome", effectively giving a middle finger to anyone that doesn't like it. It doesn't give a F-----our. Hurrah.

What the UK Govt are trying to do, in looking to privatise Channel 4, is an absolute disgrace. If it's about competing with Netflix, etc, Channel 4 already has the biggest online streaming presence in the UK. If it's about making more money, they had their best results ever this year.
A privatised Channel 4 is going to have to not only turn a profit, but will have to have continued growth. How do they achieve that? It may well mean moving productions in-house, instead of relying on independent production companies. That will put thousands of jobs up and down the UK in those independent production companies at risk, as they rely on Channel 4 for commissions.
Remember, Channel 4 is effectively just a commissioner and broadcaster. They don't actually produce programmes. That means, they don't own the intellectual property rights on the programmes they commission. Channel 4 commissioned Black Books and broadcast the first couple of series. Then Netflix stepped in with a huge offer to move to their platform. Similarly, Ch4 originally commissioned Queer as Folk back in the late 90s. Now, that show had been remade for US television. In both instances, Ch4 did not and will not see a penny in remuneration, despite being the broadcaster that put up the money to make the originals.
If the Govt really wanted to protect Channel 4 for the future, they'd abandon the privatisation plans (which the broadcast and media industry, media professionals and actors, and the public at large age all massively opposed to), and change the law to allow Ch4 part ownership of everything it commissions going forward. That way, when something they own gets remade or picked up for broadcast outside the UK, Ch4 will actually see a return on it age help safeguard their existence.
The UK has an incredible broadcast industry. Our mix of public and shareholder owned broadcasters is a careful balancing act, and has allowed our tiny little island to have a huge footprint in the world of film and television, despite occupying less than than half a percent of the landmass - along with our huge contributions to the arts through music, theatre and literature. Just think about how unlikely it is that the UK is able to punch above its weight in the arts on a global level. What the UK Government are doing to Channel 4 through privatisation, and to the BBC through reducing and looking to scrap the licence fee, could completely wreck the ability of the UK broadcast industry to actually compete on a world stage, and more importantly, continue to provide an excellent service for the people of the UK.
100 years of the BBC. 40 years of Channel 4. It would be an act of cultural vandalism to try meddle with these great, massively successful institutions, purely because of Tory ideology. Nadine Dorries is a fucking disgrace.

    • @boblowes

@Fur Q Who? The BBC? Channel 4? Neither make 'state propaganda'. Our public service broadcasters aren't controlled by the government. People have always accused the BBC of bias, be it toward the Tories or toward Labour (or these days, either anti or pro Brexit) depending on who you ask; all at the same time. This is a logical fallacy. You cannot be simultaneously biased toward and against the government, or anything else.
While it's true that there are people who have worked for the government who have gone on to work for the BBC and vice versa (sometimes it can seem like a revolving door between the two, depending on which party is in power), the BBC has lots of checks and balances to make sure that someone''s personal political beliefs do not influence their BBC output. I can tell you that, because my father was a network-level news & current affairs producer for BBC Scotland (meaning he was a producer for the entire network) as well as producing output for Radio 4, and you simply DO NOT get to that position if you wear your political colours on your sleeve. You simply won't be trusted to broadcast from an open mic, your stories won't be filled without being checked.
It's a little different these days, in that the audience now live in little confirmation bias bubbles, where social media aggregates content to you that is similar to content you've already viewed and liked. If you're depending on Twitter and Facebook etc to determine what's "biased", you're doing it from a fundamentally flawed premise.
The other thing is that these days, politicians now have a direct line of access to their constituents, as well as being able to see how badly a particular piece of news has been taken by the public. It's opinion-poll politics. You announce something is or isn't happening, that get's picked up almost immediately by the media (because we live in a 24hr news cycle now), and depending on how it's taken by the public, it can start trending very quickly as either a positive or a negative. And that has led, on more than one occasion, on a very swift u-turn; which we have seen done on multiple instances by this Govt, because they're a bunch of useless, inept wankers.
Take Partygate. For weeks, the Govt have been trotting out senior figures and Cabinet members to be spokemen, telling the media that "what the public actually want, instead of focussing on illegal parties from two years ago during lockdown, is for the Govt to get on with the job and the PM to lead the country", etc etc. Then, Queen's Jubilee, live broadcast of the upper echelons of the British state gathering at St Pauls Catherderal, and as soon as Boris Johnson appears, he & his 3rd wife get massive boos. When they leave, even more booing. Gathered at the concert on Saturday night? Yet MORE booing. Suddenly, it is inescapable. Despite trying to deny the reality of what people have been telling them for weeks, and despite losing hundreds of local govt seats at the recent elections, the Tories can no-long escape the obvious: Boris Johnson is massively unpopular, he's a vote-loser, and with him as PM, the Tories are going to become increasingly unpopular, if not unelectable. Result? By Sunday afternoon, they'd decided to have a no-confidence vote in his leadership.
Now, ask yourself this. And it really is this basic. Do the stories put out on the BBC and Ch4 in ANY WAY resemble the stuff you'll see in the Daily Mail or the Express that fawns all over the Govt? No, of course not. If it were true that either broadcaster pumped out 'state propaganda', than why are the govt so keen to neuter both broadcasters? Does that make any sense at all?
You're probably going to try and tell me that Laura Kuenssberg, the former chief political correspondent of the BBC is hopeless biased. Either Tory, or Labour. Doesn't matter. It's not true. This is a woman who wasn't allowed to have a personal opinion. Everything she published or said had to come from at least two independent sources. And the Tories once tried to set her up by giving her false information, which led to a story being pulled and an apology. But no-one has ever definitively shown which way she votes, or that her stories were inherently biased. What most people mean when they talk about bias, is that they've seen something that they themselves don't agree with, and it must therefore be wrong; rather than an objective piece of reporting.
If you want to see state propaganda in your television news, have a read of what people in Russia are being told about their govt's invasion of Ukraine. You'll find translated videos on RUclips. That's state propaganda. Learn the difference.

If they can get out of doing programmes to celebrate their 40th birthday, they will, because it is cheaper and easier for them to broadcast six hours of 25 year old USA comedies in the morning than to produce anything British, radical, thought inducing, challenging ....or even.....er........interesting , these days. The Celebrity Big Brother racism row between Jade vs Shilpa, Derren Brown’s Live Russian Roulette stunt, The Brookside lesbian kiss, Brasseye’s Paedogeddon episode, etc…) to show how brave Channel 4 are in their programming and to give those who want to privatise the channel a big f*** you to them because the channel will never die out and will always be risky as well as a brand new one-off show that’s going to show their troublemaking ways and really going to piss Ofcom off.

I’d prefer if Channel 4 celebrated by showing some of their older shows because they do have some good comedies. Why not show The Inbetweeners or Friday Night Dinner or Peep Show? All of those are way better than all the dross they’ve been putting out over the last 10 years. Channel 4 died a long time ago and then instantly gave birth to the more fake Channel 4. They’ve lost their edge and it now feels like the BBC and ITV are providing the controversial and edgy stuff Channel 4 isn’t offering. Channel 4 is now the place to go for over family-friendly and heavily censored shows. Channel 4 is going to be privatised in a few years, or at least I think, and I hope that this change gives birth to more out-there and edgier content that the network might have once provided years ago.

Hopefully with the pending sell off of Channel 4 expecting to raise up to £2billion they will be in a position to bring back live test cricket as well as other sporting events that have left free-to-air tv such as Formula One, UEFA champions league football and the open golf championship.

At times they are also the safest channel and the least challenging, in amongst the few programmes that get made that still really challenge such as It's a Sin, Derry Girls, Channel 4 News, there are a load of property programmes, antiques, cookery, the hours of repeating classic US sitcoms in the morning such as Cheers, Frasier & the King Of Queens (as much as I am of fan of those they hardly put new and original content like The Big Breakfast first (though they have brought it back on Saturday mornings this year), in addition to this they now have a heavy reliance on "popular" shows such as The Big Bang Theory, The Simpsons & mainstream Hollywood films which is hardly groundbreaking content, does Channel 4 need to go more back to its roots? Got a booklet from Equity from a socialist event in Liverpool resisting the threat of privatisation of the channel.

Channel Four today is actually WORSE than ITV!
      And that is so so sad, when you consider how it started;
As an alternative to the other channels of the time.
Now as you point out, it has far too many samey shows.
I love Frasier, but do they have to CONTINUALLY repeat it?
      :-(

@@agfagaevart In a way yes it is, they wouldn't make a Brookside reunion episode that Phil Redmond proposed, they show more vacuous content in the form of property, cooking over and over than ITV.

      Terrible!
I did not know about that. What a snub to Mr Redmond. It would've been quite cool to see some the old Brookie people together again; The Corkhills. Sinbad. Mick. etc.

@@agfagaevart Best I could do was go to a small cast reunion in September, Michael Starke (Sinbad) was there, George Wilson (little Jimmy) and the actors who played Billy , Doreen & Tracey Corkhill from the 80s.

They could've arranged a reunion quite cheaply! A little 1 hour show in a studio - Anyone who couldn't attend could do a Zoom or Teams call in...Anyway. The didn't even bother! You probably know that after Brookside ended, Channel Four sold-off the Close, and made a nice profit!

I was 13 when Channel 4 launched. It was my only source of naked ladies. During the 80s and 90s it provided alternative comedy and edgy drama, but is all but irrelevant, today. We have too much media, and C4 is just another left wing/mediocre entertainment outlet. It's no longer an alternative to the main narrative, which it always tried to be.
