It was a lonely scary flight.
The weather changed many times a day. From a wind of 4 km/h to a wind of 27 km/h. From light rain to clear skies.
Psychologically difficult flight. Outside of the villages, if you land on the narrow rocky beach below, you will never get out, and there is no mobile connection.
I have solo 2 days trip on this island. That's why I was even more scared, I knew there would be no one to look for me if something went wrong.
After the first attempt to take off, I got a full collapse from two meters due to the strong rotor. Thought it might be a bad sign? But I got up, collected my thoughts and started again.
I did not back to the start point, because clouds appeared in the ocean with small dust devils under them, and the wind increased. There is no natural wind braking along the edges of the island, and you will simply be blown into the open ocean.
I did not take risks and decided to land. (landing at the start is impossible to due to a strong rotor. downstairs is also impossible, since there is no way up. only 500m of vertical rocks and jungle).
I think it's realistic to fly 200km on this island. But we need a little better weather and a ground team that will follow you and, if anything, organize searches).
The views that were seen during this flight are simply fantastic. It's better than a dream..
Thats my adventure for a 2 day trip to this beautiful Sao Jorge Azores island. I am very pleased that I caught the weather, half a year of watching this island forecast on Windy 😃
