Time stamps: 01:45 Mike shares his insight about short-term vs. long-term optimality 14:39 Mike's opinion on methodologies and ways to optimise insulin sensitivity 26:02 Mike speaks about symptoms of too little fat in your diet 33:00 Mike covers the questions whether hairy people need more protein the less hairy 38:20 Mike's take on Borge Fagerlis opinion on "effective reps" and the theory of low volume/high RPE vs high volume/moderate RPE 42:30 Mike talks about how many bodyparts can you prioritise similarily
Cameron Holt I would bet money that Mike might agree about potential growth of traps and posterior chain development, but he would add that rack pulls above the knee generate a lot of systematic fatigue so overall they wouldn't be worth the cost
Drama Free Tbf I just put that becausse Alex posting on other channels is funny (no disrespect to him), but I'm interested in an argument against heavy rackpulls if you actually wanna grow your traps and not so much everything else. Not in that situation myself, but still interested
I believe he has referenced him in past episodes talking about rack pulls with no range of motion causing growth at the result of damaging underlying systems e.g. bones, tendons, ligaments which aren't seen as a problem till its too late.
Mike actually earned a ton of respect for the Beast Radio debate. He remained patient, polite, and clear, considering how relentless the guy was with such a weird agenda.
Alan Aragon made a Facebook post 2 days ago regarding IF and according to the Seimon et al meta analysis he cited muscle loss wasn´t higher than for conventional energy restriction. Mike sounded pretty confident that IF will cause you to lose muscle, I´m confused, help Steve :D
The thing is, many of the fasting studies have been on the typical population that is being studied, Ie. overweight individuals, non trainees, etc. I'd still assume, that being on a higher level/training age, fasting would be detrimental for hypertrophy or muscle retention. But that's only my current thoughts on the matter which definitely needs to be conducted at some point. Before that, I'd recommend against doing fasting protocols unless its benefits outweigh the cons in regards to dietary adherence, endresult
Working my way through the years of these Steve and they’re absolutely amazing, I understand everything but I’ve actually hired a coach ( Jamie Johal ) off the back of these, really motivating but I just couldn’t work out how to structure everything 🤣
What are the special sports supplements that Dr. Mike always talking about on all the podcast. Id l wouls like to know besides proper diet what does the Super Saiyan take. Thanks!
Tony Johnson dude, it would be highly unintelligent to openly discuss this in public because this stuff is not legal in the US. Referring to it as special sports supps etc is as far as you can or should go without being reckless. But if you know that he is coached by brod in terms of peds it does not take a genius to know that his stack most likely contains minimal test, lots of primo/mast, an occasional nandrolone maybe and surely lots of slin, gh and Metformin ;-)
It makes lots of sense he wouldn't detail it on air. I thought maybe I missed a podcast he detailed it on previously but I've watched all of the ones he's in, so that why i asked. I don't follow Rod but have heard of him as the evil genius. I'm all natural so I'm only aware of special supplements commonly mentioned by bodybuilders on RUclips only. Thanks!
Revive Stronger i mean, you are talking about the low range of fat as a 0.6 for kg when, i've understood, we are in a caloric surplus. I would like to know if you think that, in a deficit, we can go a little bit lower with fat intake or we should stay to the same minimum of 0.6*kg.
You have to keep the same minimum for fat intake while cutting. To my knowledge, the reasoning for that was based off of a study involving fat intake and hormone production. Fat enhances hormone production up to a point, including testosterone. Since test helps tremendously with cutting and with retaining muscle, it makes sense to not lower your test levels for a caloric deficit. It also lowers hunger.
Andrea F. Hell No. Calorie deficits already lower testosterone levels, and by dropping fats (which your body fucking needs to make hormones), you're asking for trouble.
I always feel like Mike overplays the lbm wasting properties of short term fasting by quite a bit. Sure, fasting is probably not the best tool if the goal is size gain, but it’s not like short term fasting (which I assume we are talking about here, since 48hours+is a different story altogether) will literally make pounds of meat drop off your bones and therefore should be avoided like the plague by all bodybuilders ;-) That topic would make for an interesting debate between him and Mr. Martin McD who surely would be able to offer a very well articulated and still hilarious rebutal to the critique.
Maybe...maybe not. As long as there hasn't been a well-conducted study on trained athletes, I stay away from fasting unless its benefits outweigh the cons (dietary adherence, etc.)
Sure, in the end it is another tool in the toolbox that can be helpful for some and detrimental for others depending on goal and the individual's response to it
good podcast , but mike please catch up with the nutritional science fasting has repeatedly been shown to preserve muscle and produce greater fat loss , the science is there if you're interested , two groups , calories the same a , macros the same , training the same, both resistance trained , both groups retained muscle after study , non fasting group lost 2.4% body fat , fasting group lost 16.8% body fat , your training advice is good but you're letting yourself down with old outdated nutritional advice

The how many body parts can I prioritize question is what ive been searching for, for quite a while now lol. Thank goodness its finally answered.
Perfect timing I guess
Great podcast , I can listen to Mike all day 😊 such a knowledgable guy
Audiobook narrator
A new Mike podcast today???? Best Father's Day yet!!!
Pew pew
Perfect timing! Watching the world cup while listening to this! So stocked!!!!
World cup sucks balls...okay, Portugal Spain was actually quite good, but that's one game out of decades...
The last question and answer were VERY interesting. A topic not usually covered.
Glad you enjoyed it
Instant like for Dr. Mike!
This and nothing else
when's the rack pull debate coming between mike & alphadestiny
Jeff Bunnell what would the debate be specifically?
'rackpullsabovetheknee or nah?'
Cameron Holt I would bet money that Mike might agree about potential growth of traps and posterior chain development, but he would add that rack pulls above the knee generate a lot of systematic fatigue so overall they wouldn't be worth the cost

Ouw yeah, totally agree.
At first I noticed mike rocking, not like that, in his chair, but then the conversation rocked.
Haha, he's old, that's all
Iol I thought it was the bookshelf about to fall at first
It's crazy how much content you're able to release.
Keeping it up for you guys :)

Watching mike on his couch is a redux of fear and loathing in Las Vegas (background is melting)
Hahaha, acid...

Post trainig!! Mike is back, some big gains again!!
He is!!
Thanks Steve, somehow I knew, this will be the one with my question (:
;P
Thanks for being a Patreon buddy!
Amazing interview! Thank you, Steve! :) For what topic should we look forward to next?
Thanks!
Next week is about real life application of science ;)
Yesss! That's what's up.
Hi Steve. Love the podcast. Maciej is pronounced "magic" or similar to Magic anyway ma-jic. It's polish.
I have a colleague with the same name.
Haha, that's actually quite a cool name!
*Mike is awesome!!!*
He's okay
Mike is Back!!
He is!!
Cale Schulz back is Mike
Cale Schulz back is Mike

He was talking about fasting (full fasting, and fasting as an isolated thing) when he talked about muscle loss, not IF.
Elrond Lariel Ok I thought he meant all protocols, ty

Kinda sad that the gift of Dr Mike is gonna be known by everyone literally
Working my way through the years of these Steve and they’re absolutely amazing, I understand everything but I’ve actually hired a coach ( Jamie Johal ) off the back of these, really motivating but I just couldn’t work out how to structure everything 🤣
That is totally cool! Having a coach is probably one of the best investments imo!

Super interesting as always ! ;)
Happy to hear you liked it
Will the next seminar be available in video for us all? Would love to see it.
No, that would be unfair for the paid attendees.

I don't know. You have to ask him yourself.

How does fasting NOT improve insulin sensitivity?!
15:40 you're welcome
Hehe
What about the low range of fat in a ipocaloric contest? Still 0.6 kg?
Sorry, I think that's a typo. Could you rephrase the question please

Thanks guys!
the low fat issues explains a lot, wow. I just thought I was fucked up, no sex drive and low energy on 600g of carbs sucks
Yeah, especially the lethargy. You'd expect to full of energy with all the carbs but without any healthy hormonal state...
12:14 hadn't taken special sport supplements in a long time? Nice podcast nevertheless. 👍
Cheers mate

OH YESSSSSSIR, i peed my pants!
Nothing wrong with that...I did it at least a dozen times
I was thinking about prioritising bodyparts hahaha and im just 3 years into training hahahaha now fuck that im not prioritising shit
Hahaha, hang in there. The time will come ;)

Mike is so funny
He is!!

💪💪❤️❤️‼️
Thank you!

When Mike refers to “special sports supplements” is he talking about PEDS? I thought he was natural?
Chris Richards yes he is and no, he is not natty and never claimed to be, just being careful with what and how to say in public for legal safety
He is referring to that, yes
Revive Stronger tyvm for clarifying
Google Jason Fung and fasting 🙂
Lolz

You mind linking that study?
FIRST! Hahahahah I finally got it ;)
Yaaaay^^
