The other day when I went to guitar center I tried out a Marshall dsl40. I grabbed a Jackson guitar with actives and cranked the gain all the way and the amp was chugging like crazy. I wasn’t expecting a Marshall to sound like that.

Something I've noticed with my playing over the years, is that I tend to hit 2 strings at once a lot, especially when I'm just chugging on an E chord. I've found that it seems to add a lot chug too. Btw I downloaded GarageBand 10 and I'm working on a new song atm. This new GB version is pretty cool. Can't wait to get some more songs out there and see what I can do with it! haha

Hey Matt check Saxon's re-recorded classics on Spotify , i mean i don't know if you heard them but they have some nice heavy metal - hard rock songs , and now in they re-rocorded them and they sound so sick compared to originals , i mean both are good but i'm kinda liking the new ones better , i wish... Metallica would do something like that , even while they started aka James did , that remixing won't happen , and that's fine... i understand that they want to keep the albums as they were and that perhaps they could break it while attempting but they could try to re-record some of their classics , would be sick!

It's not really about "digging in" it's more about the angle of the pick when it hits the string, using lighter strings helps, placement of the picking hand on the strings to get a muted/tight tone that that still resonates a tiny bit kinda like a tight bass drum does. Obviously the type of pick ups and amp you use make a difference but it's mainly about trying to boost the amp using EQ instead of more gain, graphic and/or parametric EQ pedals and rack units can make a low gain amp chug like a MF.. So it's not really about a ton gain it's about boosting the right frequencies that's why people will use an Tubescreamer based mid range voiced overdrive in the front of a dirty amp channel with the gain on the pedal at 0 turn ALL the way down and the level turned ALL the way up with the tone controls set to taste and make the amp sound heavy af.. It's cuz the OD pedal pushes the mid frequencies resulting in a rich harmonic overtone filled tone with a ton of sustain and power.. It's all about using as less gain as you can...heavy tones do take a lot of gain but you want to use the least amount possible to where if you turned the gain down anymore even slightly, it would need more. You want to have a clear and heavy sound and maxing gain out makes guitar tones sound buzzy and staticy sounding instead of powerful and musical.. High output pick ups, lightest gauge strings possible *lower tunings need larger gauge strings I know but you wanna use the lightest gauge possible that doesn't mean use fuckin 9-42 gauge when you're tuned to drop B lmao it means use the lightest gauge possible for whatever tuning your in* using medium to higher gain amps with very little headroom (lower watt amps have a heavy sound too sometimes heavier than higher watt amps) boosting the amps EQ to shape the tone while using as less gain as you can to still get the overtones and harmonic rich sustain and chugging tone, NOT scooping your mids... Scooped mids is a great way to start shaping metal/heavy guitar tones as a base tone to add EQ to but you want to add a shit load of mids with parametric and/or graphic EQ units to boost em back up while tightening the bottom end so it still sounds bass heavy with out getting mudded down by the actual bass players frequencies and smoothing the shrill, ice picky type high/treble end so the cymbals and vocals, drums and hi end from the bass and or other guitars (or keys) don't bury your tone in the mix either. Scooped mids sound great when you're jammin solo in your practice room but mids are literally life for guitar. Mids are all we got..and NOT picking too hard and aggressive... Lighter picking with a proper picking hand technique to strike the string(s) at an angle to produce a tone that sounds like your beating the shit out of the strings but you're really not hitting them very hard just consistently hitting the right spot of the string without digging in too much in combination with the proper placement of your picking hands palm muting and in combination with all the things I said earlier, will sound WAY heavier than hitting the string hard by digging in and playing HARD....a little bit of stereo chorus/flange in the FX loop ran stereo with a wide depth and slower rate and low mix will add to making your live guitar chug the hardest and give you the best and strongest heavy live guitar tone. The "doubled" effect from the wide stereo chorus with a lower mix will give your live guitar tone a studio quality double tracked stereo imaged tone live but it works the best with two amps..very little/less reverb helps rhythm chugging too...verb and delay is only for leads and squealing dive bomb effects or weird hooks that use a dotted 8th note/and or triplet delay to have a floaty rhythmic bouncing trippy tone but that's not too common in heavy/chugging/metal-ish music!! So no verbs or echos for chugs only for solos and FX!....this ridiculously long comment is how you can get the ABSOLUTE BEST Chugging guitar tone thats heavier than anything for rhythm and lead guitar..
P.S. following ALL the steps I said while tuning to whatever tuning you use at 450hz instead of 440hz this will make it EVEN HEAVIER and your chugs will be more brutal for MAX chugging. Digging in isn't as effective as all that shit I said lmao I know Dimebag's old guitar tech who is responsible for dimes tone...he lives in my home town Arlington (Fort Worth) Texas!! Stay HEAVY
@Tryin’ to stay high it's funny you say that I literally just cleaned out an old storage room that belongs to my sister in her house so I can make it my studio/video set for my private lesson students I teach over Face time and make it my set for my first RUclips Channel! I've been homeless for a while and lost all my gear but I've acquired a cheap but decent Schecter 6 string with dual humbuckers that coil split and a fender mustang 2 v.2 amp! I know it's shit gear but I'm lucky to have an instrument again! I also had 2 focusrite audio and video interfaces, a go pro a HORRIBLE old and slow Dell Laptop and a few dynamic mics, 2 condenser mics some cheap vocal mics A shure beta 52a kick mic and a shure SM58 and SM57 with a bunch of quality XLRs and instrument cables aux cords usb cords adapters and shit AND the room I'm living in and turning into a studio has a MASSIVE walk in closet with shelfs EVERYWHERE and a TON of clothes and thick blankets so I've made a make shift Amp isolation room/Vocal booth and storage room! I just bought some mic stands and a cheap tri pod and a little powered 6 channel mixer and my brother in law donated his old but good pair of stereo Roland studio monitors and some cheap headphones! I'm 24 and had a lot of bad things happen to me the past 2-3 years even though I didn't really do anything bad but I lost all my gear I use to be a professional musician and now I'm slowly building my gear back up I just need to learn more about technology and computers cuz I'm only 24 but I'm like a 70 year old man that doesn't know how to work all this crazy new shit! But I have many friends that have pro studios and made careers off audio engineering and I have a cheap phone and Wi-Fi so hopefully I'll get my RUclips Channel up soon once I learn some more stuff and hopefully upgrade my shitty laptop but when I start my RUclips channel up I will make a video on metal guitar chugs it may not be the best quality but as I progress and get better gear I'll be killin it ! I almost gave up music but Im still young and still pushin hard! Ola has the sickest chug. Everyone always asked me how I get my chug. I realized I have a reverse pick attack. I didn’t have anyone to show me how to hold a pick way back in the 80’s when I was a kid. It just stuck. When I discovered Ola, and heard his chug, I realized I wasn’t alone in the reverse attack. Felt a bit vindicated 😬. I did run into obstacles when it came to soloing. So now I’ve learned to use the pick both ways. 🤘🏻
I read half of your comment and was going to recommend learning both methods before I saw you learned the "normal" way. I did exactly as you and learned holding the way the "wrong" way. But now I can do both as they both have benefits and trade-offs. I think you are only the second person other than myself to use both. I’m not shit for guitar playing skill wise but I do fancy myself quite a bit when it comes to the realm of heavy tones and chugging. My Peavey 6505+ is perfect for chugging. It doesn’t need any pedals besides a noise gate. Some things I like to do to sound heavy is to attack the strings hard, and use chords when I’m picking instead of single notes. Like instead of just hitting the open e palm muted, I’ll make it an E chord to sound heavier. Also I’ll use powerchords instead of single notes when possible. I don’t know what the chord is called but you can get some insanely heavy sounding chugs when using a standard tuning and playing what would be a bar chord on the E and A (power chord if it was in a drop tuning) and then a powerchord on the A and D. I taught my friend who is a better player than me my secrets to dial in tone and how to sound a lot heavier because that was my expertise. He is a better shredder than me though. Made our jams sounds a lot better.
