40K was originally intended to be a black comedy. Everything is so absurdly evil and scaled to such an absurd degree it wasn’t really something you were meant to take seriously.

    • @draketheduelist
      @draketheduelist 2 года назад +10

40k has its time for serious heroism, from the War of Macragge or the Horus Heresy, to heroes so small that they slipped through the fingers of historical records. I certainly wouldn't call the _Lamenters_ funny. But Orks are like the Deadpool of 40k. Whenever everybody else starts getting too haughty or grimderp, the Orks will be right there to semi-meta-awarely take the piss out of them.
The value of Ork-like personalities in a story is inversely proportional to the story's quality. There's a reason everybody loved Bluddflagg in _Dawn of War 2: Retribution._ None of this "cleanse the chapter" or "recover a soul stone" or whatever not-Eliphas and not-Sindrii were on about. Bluddflagg wanted a hat, and that's so _hilariously_ petty that you can't help but root for him.

Woad is the term. It was a cultural war paint of the Picts/Celts/ other folk. The belief as I understand it was that the paint was a religious symbol and that the gods blessing from wearing it would be enough to protect them and simultaneously bring glory for every kill. I think a lot of Boudicca's warriors during the Roman occupation were Woad Warriors.

After all, it's the Empire of all united humanity, and is a giant melting pot of cultures. Like Mongolian roots of Attillan Roughriders and White Scars. The Roman and Napoleonic culture tidbits of Imperium itself. The viking inspirations behind Space wolves. Paralells between Adeptus Mechanicus and Cargo cults of Polinesia. How the church of the God Emperor is so close to christianity. Why a lot of Astra Militarum regiments have German trappings: Death Korps of Krieg, Armageddon Steel Legion, the Mordian Iron Guard, The Teutons. The Soviet origins of imperial guard Commissars. The Inquisition, The medieval origins of imperial knights. AND SO ON! So many ideas for videos!

To be honest, I've always kind of seen the Orks as being like the anime antagonists that TRY to be threatening, but come off as being like comedy relief. That's not to say that they're not threatening. I mean, they were able to bring the imperium to it's knees during the war of the beast. They ARE dangerous and you underestimate them at your own peril. But the sheer amount of wackiness and crazy adventures make them seem more like team rocket or yamcha, than vegeta or seto kaiba.
This is not saying anything against british culture however. Orks and British culture is completely different beasts (heh, pun). Yes, Orks are BASED off of british culture, but this is like saying that the elves are based off of japanese and chinese culture. There are similarities, but they're not the same thing. So, yeah.
TL:DR - Orks are just stupid fun

My favorite Ork book I’ve read was Brutal Kunnin. An Ork Bad Moons Nob named Ufthak Blackhawk. Weirdly smart for an Ork but still an Ork his Waagh invades a Mechanicus Forge World, gets into a raiding competition with FreeBooterz and the whole think shifts between the Mechanicus struggling to stop the Orkz using logic and Orks using their brand of logic that completely contradicts the Mechanicus. They try to bottle neck Orks by making it look like their strongest forces are in the front line and lead them into an ambush where it looks weak but is actually strong. The Orks don’t take the bait and ram straight into their bluff thinking their was going to have a good fight. They send out Crusade Era Titans to smash the into the dirt and Ufthak just uses a dragsta to teleport in between the shields and smash in the crews heads with a hammer. Ufthak got the vehicle by robbing an Evil Sun at a fuel station and they take the time to reference a meme. The Ork slaps the Hood of his car, bragging about how cool it is and says “This baby can fit-“ and then gets upper cutter by a hammer. The Orks are great.

That bit about English pirates is no small thing.
What we think of as "the Pirate accent" in the modern era, complete with heavy rhotic Rs (which is why everyone think pirates go "ARRRRRR!"), is actually taken from West County England and in particular the Cornwall/Cornish area.
This originated with Robert Guy Newton (a native of West County England), an actor who played Long John Silver in multiple films, particularly Walt Disney's first live-action film, "Treasure Island" in 1950, and its follow-up "Long John Silver" in 1954. This man and his native Cornish accent became so popular in the role of a pirate that he's permanently ingrained as the pop culture image of a pirate.

since discipline and stealth go together it was a natural shift over towards kommandos as the game developed.

Post 'Rogue Trader' the orks were a satire on the 1970's and 1980's football hooligans and the British underclass in general. Hence the chant "Ere we go."
What we call 'Chavs', 'Neds' and 'Kevs' back home. Typically working class kids from rough areas who used to follow small local football teams, get on buses go to away games, drink too much and start fights with guys like them in other towns. CCTV and a few police operations with stiff sentences mostly wiped out those 'firms' and the 'football casuals' in general.
The Speed freaks have less to do with the British motor racing industry and much more to do with 1980's and 1990's "boy racer" culture.
Kids who used to buy a beaten up 500 dollar car. Then they would proceed to spend a fortune lowering the suspension, having flames painted down the side or the infamous "red 'go faster' stripes" (hence the whole 'red ones go faster' ork trope)...
The Storm boys - 2nd edition - aesthetic and tactics seems to be initially based on world war one German Storm Troopers. The commisar hats, the WWI style box helmets and the military fatigue patterns.

Their main weaponry and tools consist of a Long Bow, Throwing Knife, Saxe Knife, (Aka Seax Knife), Crackers, (Aka Brass Knuckles), a camo cloak that is always described as having green, grey, blue, and NEVER black, which they switch out for a white and grey one when the seasons change, a Ranger Horse who acts as transportation, proximity alarm, and overall companion(they are trained to be absurdly smart and loyal, with a password you need to tell the horse to be able to ride it, and just being amazing horses) and finally, a survival kit/rations. While the fictional country they are in isn't that large, it is mostly flat plains, except around the coast, where it gets more rocky and foresty.
Rangers are trained to shoot a bow, the basics of almost every weapon, how to throw knifes, riding horses, mountaineering, survival, code breaking and understanding, how to climb basically anything, within reason of coarse, and they know, more then anything, the land. They learn to sleep as light as possible as to never be caught off guard. The Rangers have an extensive knowledge of the country, and a rudimentry understanding of every other country as well.
And even though they are similar in rank to Barons, aka the semi-kings of their own county or fief, they only truley act under the king. However, they have secrets the king doesn't even know about. Halt, the mentor of the protaginist, actually has a copy of the Royal Stamp on his person at most times. That is completely illegal. Only the Royal Family can use the Royal Stamp. But you could argue that Halt, one of the oldest, most experienced, and most trusted by the King, could probably get away with it after a stern talking to. Yeah, he might. He also has a copy of every single Insignia and Official Document Stamp from every single country that their country has been in contact with, soooo... thats a bit more serious.
Anyway, PLEASE check it out. It is literally Western Ninja.

Snakebite is also a name of a British “cocktail” a mix of beer and cider. That’s British alcoholic cider. If you add a dash of blackcurrant then it becomes a snakebite black.
Also in terms of theft, you need to look further north for inspiration. The Scousers were famous for nicking any thing. The joke was as soon as you park your car it would be up on cinder blocks and the wheels would be gone.

Probably one of the bigger things about Thatcher and Thraka is the religious connection - Prime Ministers are also representatives of the Church of England in a sense, and Thatcher herself was a hardline Christian zealot, actively seeing herself as a warrior for Christ against the tides of progress. Christianity was the primary cited reason of her intentionally worsening the AIDS crisis by ignoring it, and introducing Section 28, a ban on mentioning the existence of queer people by any local authority, particularly in education, only overturned in 2003.
Warhammer 40k on a grander scale is influenced by the Thatcherism of the time - her policies were actively inspired by fascism, even contemporary like Chile's dicator Pinochet being a close friend of hers. This was parodied to become things like the hardline upper-class human (white) supremacist Imperium of Man and their rotting dead emperor, only *technically* alive, that has thousands sacrificed to him per day, along with the ridiculous dedication to tradition and the guise of a holy crusade against all other races in the galaxy.

Ya know...in my interest for WH40K I've really come down to two factions to choose from and I'm with GG on this one...it's either the Orks or the T'au. I love the T'au tech and mechs...but my playstyle for 90% of the games I've ever played (unless forced by the game otherwise) is....more Orky...I.E "Run in and hit it till it quits moving"...so the Orks playstyle is far more likely to be something I can work with. I haven't really put any major cash behind an army yet cause I just can't figure out which one I wanna dedicate that much cash to...table top miniwargaming, ESPECIALLY stuff from Games Workshop...ain't cheap...at all.

the real world equivalent of the death skulls is a kid taking their parents 10 dollars from their wallets and using that to buy some toys by making their parents pay for it by card and giving that 10 dollars to their parents.
