ISX CM2250 Turbocharger chuffing at idle 13 in hg boost

  • Interesting how the turbocharger compressor stalling can be controlled by removing the elbow test plug. When the plug is removed, the boost pressure at idle is lowered to 11 inches of mercury and the chuffing stops. This accomplishes the same thing as a compressor bleed valve on a turbine engine.

    I have helped others on my forum fix this exact issue. The problem is that the EGR circuit is seeing lower than normal egr gas pressure via the EGR pressure sensor. A bad EGR pressure sensor will cause it. If the EGR cooler or other EGR components are soot-packed due to EGR cooler seepage or simply because of age, it will cause this issue too. The ECM sees lower than normal EGR gas pressure vs intake pres. and is ramping the turbo out of control to force gas through the pipe. That is the issue and nothing more. It is also recommended to replace the IMAP sensor to ensure accurate reading of intake pressure when troubleshooting this problem as well.

      Thanks. I was told i need a new turbo because of this issue. I told them to kiss my ass. Lol Love your videos. Any info on j1939 issues ? That's what i had actually brought the truck to the shop for when they told me i need a new turbo.
      I gotta say , though, im trying to do a regen right now and it doesnt seem to be getting hot.

      O replaced all the egr sensors already and I did the egr tune up, and the noise keep going ? So the means this noise it’s normal ? I can’t find the problem....

    The "chuffing" you're hearing is indeed the turbo, or more accurately the compressor, stalling. However, not a stall in the sense that most people think of it, the turbo never stops spinning, the compressor blades stall aerodynamically, just like an airplane wing. Commonly referred to as "compressor surge ". This is because at the shaft speed it's running at idle the pressure ratio in the manifold is to high, causing compressor efficiency to fall of and the stall, or "surge" to occur. Very easy to fix by relaxing the turbine housing, or opening the veins at idle if possible.

      You're referring to Cavitation. I've been told by Cummins Southern Plains that it is normal also. I wouldn't worry about it. Our trucks never had comps from this noise.

    • @im1469
      @im1469 7 лет назад +2

      Garage Day I suppose you could compare it to cavitation, though they are not identical. Even if the engineers tell you it's "normal", it is not something that a centrifugal compressor is designed to do, or handle. While the stresses caused by this prenominal phenomenon may be within the turbochargers tolerances, it would still be a better approach to either resize the turbine or rescale the vein maps to prevent it. It can and will take out thrust bearings.

    The chuffing you hear is not the turbo stalling if it was you would have no or very little boost and it would sound different. The sound you hear is common to all Cummings Isx cm871 and newer. There generally is no problem and is simple the VGT and EGR opening and closing that cause the sound.

    • @doarmihai
      @doarmihai 7 лет назад

      it's doing it only when an incomplete regen has occurred ...like when you get of highway and he was doing a regen and you come to an idle...it is part of the regen process and you hear the variable geometry of the turbo

      My 2012 Cummins ISX 11.9 that same noise sometimes when I'm idling around 700-850 but rarely then. And also if I'm going down the high and down shift going up hill it'll chuff a couple times. And if I do a manual Regen it does it all the time. Doesn't seem to affect my turbo psi or engine performance . Are you saying that it's nothing to sorry about ?

    Has there been a fix or known fault for this issue. Or is this "just normal sounds" and no harm to engine???

    2250 Chuffing has to do with all the pressure from emmissions system making that turbo overwork. That's y the turbos are always going down. Not to mention all the heat

    Try cleaning the turbo: remove the carbon build-up behind the variable viens ring plate.

    This can easily be fixed by drilling a half inch hole in the turbo casing on the inlet side. I have done about 6 of these now. Just be careful not to allow the drill to hit the turbine blades.
