Rats in lofts often gain access via the drains then the cavity wall.

- Rats can climb up vertical drain pipes.
These rats had accessed this house via two points. the Flexi pan connector and the very top of the soil vent pipe within the loft.
Rats never cease to amaze me
Who's this pretender to the rat catching throne? This isn't the Twins or Pest Interceptors? OK, I like this guy. He's not continually attempting to sell me shit. Two thumbs up, Kill Line!
@@twatmunro you made me laugh out loud there. Do you want to buy a rat trap....lol
Awesome work from Killline pest control!
If you have rats in the attic check your drains before anything. I had them in my loft and they had eaten though a drain cover. When that was replaced, no more rats.
Does this only happen when the SVP is internal? Got a couple of dropped/displaced drains right next to the house. Something came from under the floor and took 2 large baps off kitchen counter top and left piles of crumbs under the cupboard. Heard noises under the floor and in cavity walls at night. Lots of tall trees near house with squirrels.
@@jamesbarber8241 I guess it could be squirrels or rats then
Would they have been knawing at that pipe whilst it was in position
@kieronmcbrearty5068 yes absolutely
I've fixed a customers flexi where they'd ate through it on the toilet aswell
It happens a bit doesn't it
I have seen a rat come from the toilet pan.
Hi Sean do you know anyone in Essex regarding drain survey. Thanks
Great video Sean. Totally agree about rodenticide and traps. It's without a doubt the only way forward. Do you think the rats scaled the SVP internally ? Didn't think they would have grip enough unless the plumber maybe used flexi pipe over the full length ? What do you think.?
They will 100% go straight up a 4" plastic pipe internally. Davy Brown has footage of them doing just that. Amazing creatures
What will stop future rats coming from the drain and chewing through the plastic again? Enjoying the videos mate 👍🏻
As a general rule nothing. It is unusual that we would repair with a Flexi pipe, however the one that was fitted had a 4 inch attachment rather than 3. So I'm assuming that it became loose and came off with three rats weight. All the damage was to the end of the Flexi and not the vent so I'm taking a risk that removing the whole piece and replacing it with a 3" attachment will be sufficient. We would never repair a Flexi pan connector with another as the risk of chewing through would be really high. We did discuss this very thought when we contemplated the repairs. Tbf if it does chew through I'll repair without Flexi for free. The customer wouldn't be expected to repay
@@killlinepestcontrol Thanks for the info, i had an issue with a rat in my cavity/loft during lockdown and after numerous attempts of trapping etc the only thing that worked was poison and I’ve had no issues since then, but I’ve seen those rat doors that you can put on the waste outlet under the manhole outside which i was thinking of doing to put my mind at rest. I wondered if you had any dealings or thoughts on them?
Hi Stephen
As a general rule we don't recommend putting rat gates in place unless the property has been surveyed. They can cause blockages and are not guaranteed to work against rats. Plus if you have a defect which is the cause of rats and you then have a blocked drain you could end up with waste from the drains in your house. If you have a rat problem I would strongly recommend finding the entry point (possibly within the drains) and fixing it.
@@killlinepestcontrol Funny enough one of my customers who owns a drainage company said the same thing today. He said it could create more problems with back flows etc. I’m going to have a drain survey and see if there are any breaks and then get it repaired. I’ve had no rat activity for almost 2 years but it does still plays on my mind and would like to address any future issues sooner rather than later. Thanks for your excellent advice 👍🏻
@@stephengaskell673 I don't know where you are in the country but I can usually point you in the direction of someone who can do a suitable survey
What's the video got to do with the title about cavity walls?
Once in loft they can get into 'boxed in' soil vent pipe area. But that's not a cavity wall is it?
There are loads of advertising for pest guys showing and talking about 'cavity walls'. In UK, both leaves of wall brick are built on foundation footings. In my case slab is 1950's solid slab with no underfloor at all.
So how are the rats supposed to get to cavity?
If there is no damage to drain pipe, rats must be knawing through felt at eves. Is this a recent thing, because no way to stop that without zinc sheet over whole roof like a grain store.
As a general rule they tend to get out of the drainage system in the ground floor. Once in there they will access the cavity where access goes through it for pipes. Then they head north into the loft. This job was not the normal as they went up the SVP and excited at the top. It's not normal but does happen.
