  • Suzume might have my favorite ending to a Makoto Shinkai film. The Your Name and Weathering With You director met all my expectations and dashed my concerns. Consider this short my Suzume review.

This movie for me is Shinkai's best work.
It feels like the relationships and dialogue is alot more adult-oriented, rather than teen-oriented.
Also it felt like it just used the story's progress and events/visuals to explain the plot forward instead of just telling you with a character explaining, which I liked.
And most importantly, it just felt like a "Spirited Away" but in a Makoto Shinkai style-film. And I just can't imagine a thing I want more.

Only by confronting the trauma of her past head on is she able to become the full potential of the woman she was destined to be. Similarly, Makoto is conveying the same message about the country and it’s very clearly made evident in the movie. This film is *chef’s kiss*

spoilers ig: Only thing that kinda pulled me out was that she was willing to die for someone she met a week ago. I get that it was probably her first real big crush and I know how I felt a couple years ago, but the bonding happened a little too fast IMO. If it was ~a month at least I would have had much more understanding... but then you run into the problem of her being away way too long from her aunt.
It's not a major issue, just something that made me question some scenes. Regardless great movie and great little analysis of a major theme.

In reality it wasn’t completely for him. She was pursuing him through this newfound purpose she’s discovered and the potential of love inside herself. Something that had been locked away and died a long time ago. He was simply the conduit to her potential. She was really pursuing the idea of maturity and love more than the guy himself.

I've seen the last 2 films the creator made, which was weathering with you and your name. I enjoy both of them, especially weathering sigh you, but after watching Suzume, I don't know how to explain it. The movie just, speaks to me when it comes to growing up. Change is something I'm not a fan of which was clear in the movie. And finding love has also become challenging outside of family and friends. And while I want to say Weathering With You will continue to be my favorite anime film, it's now going in second as I just love how Suzume was done and really respect these kind of Japanese films. I maybe American, but hot damn, they know how to do anime.

Shinkai's movies age gap always amazed me 💀, it was better in this one 17 and 21. Suzume had feelings for souta which was obvious for a person of that age. I don't think souta felt the same way, she was more like a friend to him.

  • @klinetalladen

i thought at the core of every makoto shinkai film is a form of separation/gap between its main characters: time, dimension, societal, galaxies, psychological. etc

For this film, I think it'd be duty.
They did separate for a while at the end because they both have their own responsibilities and lives to lead.
Souta's job also likely makes it harder for him to form deeper relationships with people, Spider-Man style.

I find it interesting actually especially when they visit suzume's hometown, because there hometowns is actually base on the 3/11/11 earthquake tsunami that occur in tohoku prefecture.
Aside on it, every place that they have been such as Tokyo and Kobe has a reference of history of the most destructive earthquake.
    Kobe : 1990s earthquake
Tokyo: 1920s great Kanto earthquake. (That's why daijin said to suzume that "history will repeat itself")

The Reason Suzume Did Not Surpass Your Name and Weathering with you it's Because Your Name has Unexpected Love Interest With Mitsuha Cause We All Think That The Main Plot of Story is To Save Mitsuha and Citizen From Upcoming Disaster Not Until She Teared About Dating Taki with Other Girl, Same as Weathering with Love Interest is not expected the reason is their age and friendship between two mc not until she confess in her brother and buy a ring to connect with her, for Suzume it is a weird and plot cause he didn't know the guy yet he follow him maybe love at first sight but it is not realistic in real life just like the big 2 movies of Makoto who progress the things just like in real life
