Love this, just did the same to my Outback with a few tweaks. FYI - I was able to fish the wire through the gap into the light housing without having to remove the inner part of the housing, as long as you do it before you connect the bulb adaptor. Thank you for the idea and video!
Nice job bro. I just ordered one for my OBW. I also upgraded all the interior lighting as well as the reverse lights and rear turn signal lights to LED. I love how simple Subaru makes it for us as owners to do DIY projects on our cars. Cheers!
Why not just get the biggest led panel that you can fit inside oem housing ? Probably with 24 5630 chips. Probably would be as bright as that strip you added and look way cleaner than that just taped there imo
hi can you tell me what did you wire your rear dash cam to? this video looks great and helpful by the way. thanks Just watched your other video all clear and concise.
Which strip did you get? The ones I'm looking at don't say anything about the included connectors and want to make sure I get the one that come with it.
If your going to unmount the light housing, you could connect (solder connect) the LED strip, after the switch, so that you could keep the original lamp socket and replace that original bulb with an LED bulb, providing two sources of light combined.
The 2018 is a little different that prevents this. There is no stationary plastic trim on the roof near the lift gate, unfortunately. Too bad, I really wanted the extra light.
That was a really great video. What was the issue that you had with the light strip not turning on when you initially plugged it in after the housing was dismounted? What was that little tool that you used to pop the clips?
The 194 wiring for the LED strip is polarity specific. I just simply inserted it backwards. I just had to flip the socket around, but due to the tight space, and the curl of the wires, it looked a lot harder than it really was. The tool I used was just a dash/trim removal tool from Amazon. They can be found at most automotive stores.
Yes, the back portion of my strip came with 3M adhesive. When I took it out of the box, the adhesive came with a brown backing paper. It should be visible in the portion of my video before I adhere the strip.
What LED bulb did you had before you installed the LED strip? I don’t understand why rest of the lights inside are white and that one was left as a warm color.
This is the beauty of this product. I did NOT tap any wiring. The LED strip comes with a small wiring harness at the end that comes with interchangeable male sockets. All I did was use the socket that fits the overhead cargo light (its a 194 bulb socket) and plugged it in. As far as the car knows, its just another lightbulb. There is NO splicing, wire taps or cutting involved with this installation. It’s 100% reversible as all you have to do is unplug it and put the stock bulb back in. I explain this at 0:24 in the video.
Of course. And as I explained the beginning of the installation (1:34 in the video), I already had an LED bulb in there. Not only that, I replaced it with a more powerful 921 bulb and I still found it insufficient, hence the upgrade to the strip.
Can you give me an example of what could go wrong? If something were to go wrong, you can just unplug and remove the LED strip and plug in a normal bulb.

*I appreciate the OCD with getting it lined up....I fully understand.* I have a 2021 Onyx edition BTW.*
i wanted the onyx but they only had the premium on the lot and i didn’t want to wait months for one so i took the one on the lot
Hi there, I am planning to get one as well. Have you thought about replacing the speaker system. I know the Wilderness does not come with HK speakers.
Outback in Australia comes with twin LED in the boot/trunk
Thanks for the install video. I would never have attempted it without your help.

The rear dash cam is powered by the front one. The cable is wired just the same as the video I did in the Crosstrek Wilderness.
Can you change the time trunk light for the subaru ascent?
Great video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
A little black heat shrink would hide the white cable.

Black magic marker to darken the white wire
AND. What is the current draw on the strip vs. stock bulb? Is there a risk of pulling too much current with the strip on?
The LED strip draws the same amount, if not less than the incandescent bulb that came with the car. There should be no issues in current draw.
Tk looking forward to install

White wire no issue. Use some black heat shrink
Hey was the black portion at the back sticky? I just got mine today and am trying to install, but it's not sticky at all

The strips are manufactured and sold as "adhesive" and "non-adhesive" strips. You bought the wrong type.
This is a good upgrade for outback, I would like to do it for mine. May I have the product link?
@@wildxtrek Thank you!!

My car has all of them as white besides that rear light which is red-ish. What LED did you use before you got the strip?
Link for the product please, thanks

Curious, did you pick cool white or warm white?
Looks great
@@wildxtrek Thanks! I have a 2019 Outback and I just bought the kit at Diode Dynamics.
Great videos! Curious is that an aftermarket backup camera?
It’s a rear dash camera. I have a two channel dash cam system in my car.
Considering you tapped into wiring, would this cause potential void for warranty?

What vehicle warranty covers light bulbs?
Can you change the led bulbs on the wilderness lift gate? I have a wilderness edition, and rather have some warmer LEDs instead of the oem cool white.
@@wildxtrek d’oh. Well that’s a bummer. Thanks for the heads-up.
@@Melvin-belvin Did you even watch the video he clearly explains that it is not serviceable. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
That will last for five minutes if you are lucky.
Better off putting a brighter lamp in the original fixture.
or you can replace the "crappy bulb" with a LED bulb :)
it's not gonna be as bright as the strip though

Too many things can go wrong.

I can just imagine my tool slipping and breaking something - or doing something wrong. But you’re probably more skilled.
