I hate to say this because I spent part of my childhood and preteen years at New Birth Missionary Baptist church. (It was in a different location then and the late Bishop Eddie Long was only Reverend Long when me and my Dad switched.) New Birth is a straight up cult now PRETENDING to be a Baptist Church. It’s been one since at least about 2004, the last time I visited. I don’t know what happened and how, but starting with his predecessor, the pastor can say pretty much ANYTHING on the pulpit and those folks will clap, shout, and agree. No matter how unbiblical it is. Many of the followers can’t visit another church and pay attention, and if the minister says something and gives sound scriptural basis, in red letters, they’ll argue with it and dismiss it if “Bishop” (they think there’s only one Bishop on earth at a time) says differently. I’m not trying to clown those folks, but it gets quite disturbing to hold a spiritual conversation with them.

When he allowed Brian Carn to preach this one Sunday, BC laid his hands on me when I simply wanted prayers as I was having issues with college. This BC guy tried to cast out a demon instead. The next thing I know this dude from out of nowhere stood behind me as if to prepare me in case I fell back. BC laid hands on my forehead and was saying all this garbage. I turned around and went and sat down. Don't think I haven't went to that church and that was early 2000s.

Then..he kept repeating 'Watch this'..Watch this'...Watch this'... as an apparent build up to his speaking point as if he didn't even know his next word for lack of knowledge...stalling...I was shocked by what I experienced and never returned It took me one visit. As a person who attended New Birth back in the day, this has me bawling! The reason I left NBMBC was even in the days of Bishop Eddie Long I saw the goats being fed while the sheep like me were starving to death! So I had to leave and I have been hungry for a church home since then.

The voice explanation at the beginning of this video was great and very informative. But on another note over 12 years ago when I first ran across Jamal he wasn’t this bad. I find it so confusing that churches like his have members.
Just so y’all know my perspective, for what it’s worth. I’m a mid-40s Atlanta native that grew up in Lithonia, Ga. (Where New Birth is now.) I was a member of the church in my late childhood and early teen years when the late Bishop Long was still just Reverend Long. (No Jheri curl wigs, no sleeveless robes or any of that then.) He’s the first Pastor I listened to and I’ve always had a lot of love for him. I don’t know what happened between the time we left in the early 90s and the time I returned to visit for Bible Study in 2003. But I left that Bible Study emphatically believing that New Birth Missionary Baptist Church became a cult pretending to be a Baptist Church. I think many of it’s members were initially drawn when celebrities started popping by, so there was a level of “clout” in their minds. Also Bishop Long fell into soft on sin prosperity preaching, so the audience had a great time and never felt convicted. None of that is what gave me cult vibes though. It was when he boldly stated some unbiblical, self aggrandizing stuff on the pulpit and thousands of people shouted amen. And outside of himself, multiple frustrating and disturbing conversations I’ve had with New Birth members. For brevity I won’t go into details, but it became clear that many New Birth members were prouder in following “Bishop” than they were Jesus. They didn’t respect other preachers. If you offered any criticism or doubt to a word Bishop said and backed it up with scripture IN RED LETTERS, you’ll be met with a gang mentality that’ll give all of Chicago pause. I honestly feel that if Jamal Bryant’s predecessor wanted to fly his congregation to South America and pull a Jim Jones part 2, he easily could’ve. He perhaps would’ve exceeded Jim Jones’s body count. I wasn’t surprised at his scandals, I honestly thought that after Bishop Long passed, perhaps some of that stuff would lift, maybe the new Pastor would calm it down and steer it toward respectability. But it seems the opposite happened. I say all of that to point out that Pastor Jamal Bryant didn’t exactly build this literal cult following (in Atlanta) from scratch, he inherited much of it. He walked into a huge, wealthy, fanatical congregation already primed for his level of crazy. But what’s scarier is that he’s opened for Obama. He’s a mainstay guest on V-103. (Atlanta’s biggest radio station for Hip Hop and R&B). He’s making the type of moves that flatters certain political agendas and the media could make him the political face of the black church. I think he has the potential to be twice as dangerous as his predecessor ever was.

I’m between church homes myself ATM. I was raised Baptist and my wife COGIC, we’re trying to find a happy middle with no strange doctrines. (It’s not as easy as it should be.)

Just so y’all know my perspective, for what it’s worth. I’m a mid-40s Atlanta native that grew up in Lithonia, Ga. (Where New Birth is now.) I was a member of the church in my late childhood and early teen years when the late Bishop Long was still just Reverend Long. (No Jheri curl wigs, no sleeveless robes or any of that then.) He’s the first Pastor I listened to and I’ve always had a lot of love for him.
I don’t know what happened between the time we left in the early 90s and the time I returned to visit for Bible Study in 2003. But I left that Bible Study emphatically believing that New Birth Missionary Baptist Church became a cult pretending to be a Baptist Church. I think many of it’s members were initially drawn when celebrities started popping by, so there was a level of “clout” in their minds. Also Bishop Long fell into soft on sin prosperity preaching, so the audience had a great time and never felt convicted. None of that is what gave me cult vibes though. It was when he boldly stated some unbiblical, self aggrandizing stuff on the pulpit and thousands of people shouted amen. And outside of himself, multiple frustrating and disturbing conversations I’ve had with New Birth members. For brevity I won’t go into details, but it became clear that many New Birth members were prouder in following “Bishop” than they were Jesus. They didn’t respect other preachers. If you offered any criticism or doubt to a word Bishop said and backed it up with scripture IN RED LETTERS, you’ll be met with a gang mentality that’ll give all of Chicago pause. I honestly feel that if Jamal Bryant’s predecessor wanted to fly his congregation to South America and pull a Jim Jones part 2, he easily could’ve. He perhaps would’ve exceeded Jim Jones’s body count. I wasn’t surprised at his scandals, I honestly thought that after Bishop Long passed, perhaps some of that stuff would lift, maybe the new Pastor would calm it down and steer it toward respectability. But it seems the opposite happened.
I say all of that to point out that Pastor Jamal Bryant didn’t exactly build this literal cult following (in Atlanta) from scratch, he inherited much of it. He walked into a huge, wealthy, fanatical congregation already primed for his level of crazy. But what’s scarier is that he’s opened for Obama. He’s a mainstay guest on V-103. (Atlanta’s biggest radio station for Hip Hop and R&B). He’s making the type of moves that flatters certain political agendas and the media could make him the political face of the black church. I think he has the potential to be twice as dangerous as his predecessor ever was.

I’m between church homes myself ATM. I was raised Baptist and my wife COGIC, we’re trying to find a happy middle with no strange doctrines. (It’s not as easy as it should be.)
