Have you ever thought about being a birthing coach?

Unpopular opinion here… but I’m not mad about my c section. I AM mad about my induction experience (NEVER AGAIN 😅) and I am totally aware that because I was induced, it probably lead to the c section in the long run. BUT, I’m not mad about it. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Yes, recovery sucks but my personal experience really wasn’t that bad. I’m totally down for showing up on a scheduled day, being wheeled back and having my baby a short while later. I think it’s great that some women want to give birth at home and are able to successfully do that. Truly! I respect the science but it’s not for me.

My wife and i are planning for a free birth here in ireland. They dont offer midwife led care for home birth because she had 2 sections. Get this, one hospital here in Ireland has a stat of 77% c-section and 23% vaginal birth. Same story with my wife, lavour didnt progress but i feel thats the doctors putting women under pressure because its not progressing to their time. Once you go in, you're on the clock and your time slot is ticking down. It feels like a conveyer belt and women are just a number.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻YESSS for standing up for midwives!
I switched from an OBGYN for my first birth to a midwifery for my current second pregnancy/birth and it’s truly a night and day experience. Midwives are the best and I have experienced way more care about me mentally and they truly trust the process of our bodies knowing what to do.

I had a HBAC- home birth after a c-section 22 years ago! 10 pound shoulder dystocia born in the bath tub! So grateful to trust my intuition and not have to deal with the western birthing model. ❤

Midwives are SO knowledgeable. They have to be or they wouldn’t be able to last in the field. Mine is in year 41 of her practice. She’s attended the births of 5 other women I know. Only one of them was a transfer, and that was someone who had the same issue as her first two births due to her own physiology. This midwife made the call to transfer in plenty of time. Both mom and baby came through healthy and happy.

Love your take on all of this! I took the PBC class out of the UK for my first pregnancy and thought it was incredible! Between hypnobirthing and a doula I delivered my 9lb baby with no interventions other than nitrous oxide. The birth “high” and empowerment was spectacular. Next time I’m hoping for a home birth!

I'm so glad that your home birth experiences were positive and empowering, but tbh I do have a problem with your talk in the beginning stating that if expecting mothers were on an island, most likely their births would be fine and not need intervention. I don't have children of my own, but I do come from a big family, and my mom had issues with over half of her births. One of my sibling's shoulders did get stuck in the birth canal, and BPI resulted from malpractice trying to correct the situation. Another sibling was 9+ inches with several weeks of pregnancy to go, so my mom had to be induced early to prevent another situation like the sibling with BPI. I myself almost died when I was born because of other issues. Again, I'm very glad you had positive home birth experiences, but just based off my family's experiences I feel that it's wrong to imply that just because something was done for millennia or is Nature's way of doing something that means it's objectively a safe process. Birth for modern humans is far more dangerous compared to our early ancestors and to animals, even to our close relative the ape, because we evolved to be bipedal and have much larger heads when we're born, making child birth a very complicated process for our species. Can it go off without a hitch? Of course. But medical intervention is also why the maternal mortality rate has gone down in the last century within communities willing or able to accept the assistance, and I think it's important to still acknowledge that while talking about a preference for a natural home birth and making generalizations about what our bodies are capable of.

What you fail to mention are the things that happened prior to your mother's shoulder dystocia experience. Was she at the hospital? What she in the lithotomy position? Was she forced to push before having the urge to push? Did her physician try the Gaskin maneuver or he McRoberts maneuver first? I bet that if you found the answers to these questions, you would find that it was the circumstances of her birth that led to that complication and the medical team's lack of understanding how to resolve it seamlessly.

Would love to hear your husband's thoughts and opinions of your birth experiences and perhaps even a parenting video on how you navigated parenthood together and some things that were things you both wanted for your children e.g. rules on technology, homeschooling, doing extra curicular activities, chores etc

My second birth was one of those horror story v-bac's. Because of my horrific experience ending in uterine rupture and stillbirth I am always so scared when others tell me they are trying for a v-bac. Less than a percent of risk doesn't hurt any less than if it was a larger risk. I know so many people are successful, but I think people need to have a good plan in case things go wrong. I was 20 minutes away from the hospital and it was too late by the time I got there. I'm so glad things went well for you, and you have a beautiful baby!

Love this and totally agree Jamie! Midwives are amazing and so knowledgeable! And also highly recommend hypnobirthing and the positive birth company! I read the PBC book and practised hypnobirthing and just gave birth to my beautiful daughter 16 days ago (my first baby) and got the birth I wanted! I gave birth in a midwifery led unit in a hospital and they were brilliant and so on board with hypnobirthing and having a very natural birth and respecting my birth preferences. I loved labouring in water and used the up breathing technique (in for 4, out for 8) to get through my contractions and really helped. I did get gas and air to help me through the final stage (from probably about 8cm dilated) so not technically fully unmediated but mostly and it worked perfectly for me.
Definitely agree educating yourself is so important and helped make it such an empowering experience.
Also, side note, healthcare in the US is wild! It’s crazy to me you had to pay that much to have a baby.. I gave birth in Ireland and the entire pregnancy, birth and postpartum/baby checkups are completely free. There are private options which you’d have to pay for but in general all birth is free. Definitely makes me appreciate that even more to hear the cost people gave in the US 😅🙈 xx

Yes!! A video with your husband. I could see how getting the supportive partner on board with a home birth would be an issue or deterrent. That was part of my issue why I couldn't go through a home birth with my last child. My fiance was not a fan of the idea so we ended up at a hospital. And the idea of getting an epidural again (third birthing experience) was very tempting being at the hospital. I didn't get the experience that I wanted but overall I have another healthy baby and that was the main goal.

Do you know the history of hypno birth? Like I’m wondering if it aligns with the Bible? When I hear hypno I think opposite. Curious if you know, I will also do my own research. Thanks for sharing your passion with us!

    • @theJamieWolfer
      @theJamieWolfer  11 месяцев назад

I almost didn’t even take the course the first time around because of how opposite it sounded, so I totally get it! But it’s less actual hypno-y stuff and way more science and intentional relaxation. My first instructor was a devout believer, and this last time around I used the Christian Hypnobirthing app to practice with. It ended up being a beautiful, faith-filled experience for me personally. Don’t let the name turn you off, and yes, definitely do your own research!

That one person’s comment is so tough because I’m sure they meant well. But it’s never helpful to just dismiss the expertise of a whole group of people such as midwives. I wish more medical professionals wanted to support women’s birth decisions rather than writing them off for going the natural route.
