    Stam Fine Reviews takes in a deep breath to look at Wild Wild West for the arbitrary reason that the film came out 25 years ago. Wild Wild West resurrected a 60's spy/western hybrid series as a summer blockbuster, reuniting the director and star of Men in Black and turned out to be an expensive movie that didn't quite light the box office on fire. It was successful, just not successful enough to recoup its enormous budget.
    Stars Will Smith, Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Salma Hayek, Ted Levine. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

It's like the creators were convinced that every single trick they have will be SO COOL when they end up being laughably lame - but at the same time the jokes are not self-aware and they keep on coming thinking they're the best jokes ever.
    This isn't "so bad it's good" movie, it's "so lame it's badass" it seems.

    Fun Fact: Richard Donner (who directed original episodes of Wild Wild West) was going to direct the movie with Mel Gibson as Jim West, but they left because dealing with Jon Peters was too crazy and they made Maverick instead… I would of loved to have seen there take on the movie

    • @carlrood4457
      @carlrood4457 3 дня назад +3

      I think there's a key difference between the adaptations the highlights the problems with WWW very well. Maverick was very much in the style of the original, with a bit more action and sillier comedy for a modern movie audience. It never strayed from the concept of gambler who'd rather just mind his own business getting wrapped up in stuff and having to use his wits, rather than guns, to solve his problems. They understood that the charm of the lead actor is what made the show and and would make the movie.
      While he had a varied career and did play against type at time (e.g. Woodrow Call in Streets of Laredo), Maverick was pretty much Garner's bread and butter character. He played variations is Support Your Local Sheriff, The Great Escape, and The Rockford Files (which he pretty much described as Maverick in the present day).

    What was so frustrating about this movie is that it completely ruined the perception and legacy of the original 60s tv show which I was a fan of watching in syndicated reruns. It’s a great premise with cool characters and a really unique steam punk aesthetic that was just completely shat upon thanks to this. It’s now an IP that no one will touch or revisit even though I think it could still make for a great film or series.

    • @LifeWithPico
      @LifeWithPico 3 дня назад +2

      @@LifeWithPico Like with most IP cash grabs the problem with this film and others is that they wind up being made by people that have no real affinity or love for the material. You don’t need to be a fan to make an adaptation work but when it comes to an IP that has become as niche or as tarnished as this one it can only remotely work if the creative team behind it actually gives a fuck about the story and IP.

    The giant mechanical spider was something of an obsession of producer Jon Peters. He'd been attached to a Superman reboot that never happened that Kevin Smith was hired to write. Apparently did he not want Superman to fly or have a cape, but also insisted he had to fight a giant mechanical spider. He literally wouldn't give that up.

    Wild Wild West was a cult TV series and still had reruns on French TV in the 90s (Star Trek, by comparison, had much less reruns in France).
    The most baffling decision was to not use the original music theme, and a similar intro sequence than the TV-series. They were so iconic.

    You may counter-argue that the opening titles to the Wild Wild West TV show themselves evoke a Bond film, but I'd counter-counter-argue that they have far more in common with the work of Saul Bass or Pablo Ferro than they do the work of Maurice Binder or Robert Brownjohn...arguably.

    To think the same people - pretty much - who made Men in Black followed that up with this. Just goes to show there’s no guarantee of success

    The only good thing from this movie is the Neil Cicirega remix of the Will Smith song in the credits. Wow Wow is a marked improvement.

    I'll be honest, I think Wild Wild West is a terrible movie, but kind of a guilty pleasure anyway. I've rewatched it at least a few times....it's one of those movies that bad but entertaining enough. I'd probably give it a 6 out of 10.

    When you said there was a MY FAVORITE MARTIAN movie I thought you were having a mild stroke, but no.

    Its a shame. All of the clips I see of this film. Look like it should be good fun.
