Chicago Bulls - Indiana Pacers | 1998 Playoffs | ECF Game 4: Killer Miller

  • Reggie Miller's three-pointer with seven-tenths of a second to go capped a fourth-quarter long-distance shooting barrage and gave the Indiana Pacers a 96-94 victory over the Chicago Bulls, evening the Eastern Conference finals at two games each.
    "We wanted to get Jordan out of the play and he switched," said Miller. "Pippen wasn't playing me aggressively and Derrick made the pass. All I had to do was get my feet square."
    Miller added to his growing playoff legend after Scottie Pippen missed a pair of free throws for Chicago and the ball went out of bounds with 2.9 seconds to go. Miller lost Ron Harper as he curled around a series of picks and bumped aside Michael Jordan at the top of the circle before taking the inbound pass from McKey and burying the game-winner from the right wing.
    "We designed the play for Reggie," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "I didn't think he was going to as wide open as he was. He was wide open. I knew he was going to make it."
    The Bulls had one last chance, but Jordan, who scored 28 points, saw his double-pump 25-foot banker rattle in and out as the horn sounded, completing an erratic final three minutes for the two-time defending NBA champions.
    "Michael got a look and a shot that scared me," Pacers forward Antonio Davis said. "He double- and triple-clutched and I said there's no way - not even for him."
    "Every time I shoot the ball I think it's going in," said Jordan, who was 12-of-27 from the field. "But it's out of my hands once it leaves my hands. I was surprised I got it off. But a lot of things surprised me today."
    Chicago had some tough breaks with the calls down the stretch. In addition to the call against Rodman, who was whistled for an offensive foul with 21 seconds to play, Best appeared to have a toe on the line on his three-pointer, and a loose ball ruled off Pippen with 2:16 to go appeared to go off one of the Pacers.
    "This is an unbelievable finish," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "The Pacers should not have been in the position to do that. This was Munich in '72 revisited. I doubt I can watch the last 10 minutes (again) without calling (NBA vice president of basketball operations) Rod Thorn. The offensive foul on Rodman was unbelievable."
    "That was a tough call, but we can't whine about it," Chicago guard Steve Kerr said. "But maybe we should. It worked for the Pacers."
    Kukoc scored 18 points, Harper added 13 and Pippen 12 for the Bulls, who shot 56 percent (39-of-70), but just 4-of-9 from behind the arc. Rodman pulled down 16 rebounds, helping Chicago to a 40-32 advantage on the boards. Pippen had 10 assists and seven rebounds, but made just 2-of-7 free throws.
    "I'm part of the team and we all have to step forward," Jordan said. "I'm not going to point fingers. But we all have to move on. Things happened here today but you have to roll with the punches."

    This video doesn't show it, but I remember when Miller hit the go ahead 3 that Larry Bird's reaction was very stoic. No emotion. He knew that there was time left and that MJ was going to get a crack at a game winner.

      HabsFanMTL88 reggie's push was 5X as bad as MJ's "push" on Russell. Reggie blatantly SHOVES MJ. Russell was already running towards the sideline in bad defensive position and MJ just used him as leverage. Not really a "shove". BR was just playing terrible defense, look at his feet.

    • @mickeyjohnson5247
      @mickeyjohnson5247 10 лет назад +33

      Yes, those Knicks series in 92 and 93 were tough... but the Bulls were never really threatened by them like they were by this Pacer team. In 92, we blew the Knicks out in Game 7, 110 to 81. We knew we were going to win Game 7. In 93 after we lost the first two in the Garden, we took the next four. We basically owned them after those first two losses. But in this Pacer series, we ALMOST lost Game 7. We barely got by them. We took the first two in the United Center. Then they out clutched us in Games 3 and 4. We blew them out in Game 5. Then couldn't close them out in Game 6. Then we squeaked by them in Game 7. I remember every last Series throughout our 6 Title runs and none of them made me more nervous than this Series....

    • @Lexgluger01
      @Lexgluger01 9 лет назад +5

      Tibor Hegedűs Tougher in the sense that the KNICK style of play was more physical and they boasted a stingier defense than Indy but the KNICKS never had a flow in their offense that made Chicago second guess their title hopes.

    • @mmcneil777
      @mmcneil777 9 лет назад +11

      It's true. They came EXTREMELY close to losing. I remember this series. At one point in game 7, it looked like they were going to lose, but Jordan came through again and seemed to miraculously change his approach to the game and the Bulls pulled away. But it was a like a toe-to-toe Heavweight fight. Somewhat of an underrated series, because it was TOUGH.

Yes he pushed off, but come on. it's a phisical game and the stakes are so high. you gotta be phisical, especially when your opponent is MJ. bottum line, a tremendous shot

    The 1998 Pacers did something I honestly don't know if it's happened before or since- they didn't lose a home playoff game, yet didn't make the NBA Finals.
    I don't know if this has ever happened before (the Cavs/Knicks got 1 win on their homecourt, and this was a homer series)

This was harder than the actual final, no disrespect to the Jazz who also provided a heck of a test, but this was a series that went back and forth, even though the Bulls were outplaying the Pacers most of the time, the Pacers held firm and fought to the end. Bulls shot 24 of 41 from the line
    Pacers shot 23 of 37 from the line..
    Jordan had 28 9 and 8 but was only 9 of 25 from the field and 10 of 15 from the line
    Pippen was 6 of 18 (0-5 3pts)
    Toni Kucoc was the difference 21 points (7 of 11 including 3 of 4 3pointers) also
    Steve Kerr had 11 off the bench including 3 3 pointers.
    Bulls outrebounded the Pacers 50 to 34.
    For the Pacers
    Miller had 22 (7 of 13 including 4/7 3pointers)

      Historical Perspective difference was rebounding. With the bulls winning the battle on the boards Toni never gets a chance to shoot 7-11 with 4 3’s. Rebounding especially offensive rebounding won the bulls that game. And MJ had 9 1-2 he scored off few more got other players shots. Defense wins games but people who don’t know basketball don’t understand how important winning the battle in the boards is.

    That's because Reggie Miller was the heart and soul of the Indiana Pacers. The team we have now is just a lifeless corpse compared to the greatness that once was.
    A lot of the fans have just lost interest. I used to be a die hard fan, but if you asked me today what I think of the Pacers I would say....go Colts.

    Good quality push by Miller on MJ and McKey grabbed and dragged Dennis on that moving screen call.

    Clutch shot. (Super offensive foul to get open). I refer people to this vid when they complain about Jordan's last shot against Utah.
    What a finish either way.

    You're right, thanks for sharing that story.
    I chose to not include it because it didn't affect the outcome of the game and there was already much other stuff I had to fit in.

    Larry Birds non-reaction is a classic, but people mis understood his non facial reaction. Reggie Miller during the regular season had hit 14 game winners. So when Reggie hit this one Larry Bird at this point kinda expected it. So he wasn't saying so much "been their done that" he was really thinking "oky Reggie you've done this enough times this season good job now lets go on to game 5"

  • @PhillyCYOSports

    Larry Bird was such a fucking hard ass with that dead pan reaction.

    Anybody who thinks Jordan pushed off on Russell obviously never saw this one. And you know what? I'm glad it wasn't called. Let em play.

    Jordan shot was so close to going in. Miller's celebration after his shot would have looked bad if Jordan's shot went in.

    if jordan made that shot, it would have been one of the greatest playoff moments of all time. even so, that was a great game that i remember clearly

  • @kOrOne79
    @kOrOne79  17 лет назад

    Me too, but that was the older and wiser, somewhat quieter MJ. He had already won so much at that point. I remember how he jumped in celebration after the Bulls had won Game 5 at the Garden in the 1993 Playoffs.

    That GW attempt at the end sends chills down my spine. Just a tad bit off it, and the Bulls are up 3-1.

  • @kOrOne79

    Smits had another great game, that's why I decided to concentrate on Miller and Best, because they made important plays in the clutch. Game 6 was all Smits.

    the amazing thing to me is that Smits scored 25(high scorer) and there is no film of him scoring. Just goes to show how much he accomplished, especially deep in the playoffs, with little notariety.

    It blows me away Larry Bird didn't continue on as a coach. He would have been one of the greatest coaches of all time. Reggie would have gotten at least 1 ring with Larry as coach before he retired in 2006.

    Watch Randy Brown start to walk off the court when the shot goes up, not when it goes in, but when it goes up. If that doesn't show respect for how clutch Miller was, I don't know what does.

    What a spectacular finish to an amazing game! Although the Bulls lost this game;
    WTF is with the Pacers' "DEFENSE" chants? Those chants are VERY odd!

    if it wasn't for Jordan and the bulls in the 90's, Miller and the pacers and malone and the jazz would have championships. Miller was mr. clutch in the playoffs every year

    The "Push-Off" is right here! lol. Memorial Day '98. never forget how pissed me and my uncle were when reggie hit that 3 and mj missed that bankshot. Bird knew Miller almost made a mistake by leaving time on the clock. thats why he didnt celebrate.

    Everyone forgets how good this Pacers team really was maybe even better than the team that went to the finals in 2000 if they had won that jump ball late in game 7 they would have won and likely the title
