This is a standard line in fighting games actually. Combos were "a bug" that got turned into a feature, and a lot of fighting game quirks take advantage of bugs but most were actually overcome with precise gameplay. Fighting gameplay evolved a LOT as a result.

I've been in software QA for half a decade almost; my definition of a bug or glitch includes what you said - unintended emergent property or behavior of legitimate mechanics/use cases. Bugs can happen at any point in the design or implementation stages. An engineer can code something exactly to the specifications, and yet those specifications can be flawed if the designers/product owners didn't account for everything.

I would say that for a lot of gamers/speed runners, that sort of thing falls more into the category of "exploit"
Taking advantage of intended game properties to achieve unintended effects.
This differs from a bug, an unintended game property, or a glitch, a failing of the games properties themselves.
      Its like
Bug: This feature was unintentionally created.
Glitch: A feature that exists due to a failure or corruption of the game itself
Exploit: Combining or utilizing intended features to achieve an unintended effect.
I mean, there is a reason that a large number of exploits are still allowed in various games "glitchless" categories.

I decided to check the current version of the DE speedrun yesterday night. Did a youtube search, saw a almost sub 29, watched it, and thought of you the entire time.
Karl, you absolute legend, you should know how speedrunners are. They are almost the epitome of the proverb, "Where there's a will there's a way." I was floored by the glitches and jumps these speedrunners did. Just the jump to the end of the first level of Hell on Earth got me. The Dev Room access is insane.
IGN is doing a cool series where devs reaction to speedruns of their own games; y'all watchers of this show should check out the Tomb Raider and Ape Out runs, great commentary. I would LOVE to see the Doom devs reacting to the current runs.

I don't think ID "forgot" to disable the console command for binding the scroll wheel. In this case it's no different than using a macro to rebind the spacebar to the scroll wheel (not usually bad, but because it's dev restricted here, it should be disallowed for speed running purposes) or a custom controller to make certain input combinations easier.
It would be entirely different if you could glitch the options menu to bypass the restriction and rebind anyways, but using console commands it basically entering a cheat code and should be discouraged not encouraged.

I don't think the "ledge smoothing" works like you showed, it probably is just that Doomguy has a capsule collision. And for the jump extension I'd say is something similar, Doomguy may have some collision system detecting if he started falling AND close to where he fell from.
And I find it funny that this version of id Tech still has slope jumps just like Quake, I hope they don't change any of these -bugs- features.

    • @gnack420
      @gnack420 4 года назад +2

That doesn't make any sense. For the first one, the ramp jumping only works on ramps, which means it doesn't matter what shape the Doomguy's hitbox is, if the ground isn't a ramp you won't get the boost. For the second one, that is literally the equivalent of what he said, just from the "perspective" of the Doomguy. It would make much more sense (and be more performant) to surround the ledges with an extra hitbox and check whether the player is colliding with it, rather than adding some static number to Doomguy's hitbox every time you perform a check.

    • @Micrologist2351

We know that the game determines what is and what isn't a ramp by looking at the face normal of the surface the player is standing on. If its z component is less than 0.91 it is considered to be a ramp (flat ground would have a (0,0,1) surface normal). This can't be explained by the player having a capsule collider (which it does) as that wouldn't lead to any detectable surfaces with a non (0,0,1) normal on sharp edges.

The sheer perpendicular-thinking problem-solving involved that runners do to break games. I one found what amounted to a kind of memory leak in Anarchy Online because I explored a city and noticed a bunch of NPCs would wander into a fountain and get trapped at the bottom, stacking more and more of them until they were impossible to count, figured out it was a pathfinding error, and it was fixed quietly a few weeks later when I reported it. It's like using a modded controller to make doing a HESS easier in Ocarina of Time. Kinda gross and goes against the spirit of speedrunning.
Also, having a higher framerate to get better results basically gatekeeps top times behind having a super good computer. The game should be forced to lock at 60 or 120 or 144 at MOST, imo. But this is less of a contentious issue since they at least stop it at 250.

The console commands and the script utilizing them were actually made legal for use in lieu of preventing the exploit from being gated behind buying external hardware like a mouse with freespin. The people monitoring submissions explicitly waited to share information about it until they had a script ready to help at least standardize it for everyone to use.
It's absolutely not a perfect solution, but it's not the worst one since most speedrunners will tend to have rigs that can run the game they choose decently to start (Because, who would want to competitively run a game they just inherently can't play optimally to start with) with compared to having a mouse that specifically allows you to disable the ratcheting on the scrollwheel.

Putting limits just to spite users of current high end hardware and future mid range hardware is the reason some games "don't age well". Limiting the frame rate makes perfect sense. What monitor you are going to buy or your current/future PC is not really relevant to that.
That's nice that you have a free scrolling wheel, but its not really relevant or a counterpoint.
Putting a framerate limit isn't "spiting users of high end hardware". It's leveling the playing field. 120 or 144 would be generous, nobody really needs more than that. Tests have been done showing 144 is truly at the upper limit of what makes any sort of tiny, negligible difference to the eye & brain.
Of course 15fps would suck, that's very easily detectable as being worse than 60 or 30 or even 20. But a developer locking a framerate at an unacceptably low level, and a community agreeing to lock a framerate at "the upper threshold of what humans can perceive", are completely different things that you can't compare and a complete non-argument on your behalf lol

My Man, you explain things so perfectly. I always think, "well how does...?" then almost always your next plot point explains it in every video. bravo.

Another great video, Karl's got a great presenting style, friendly without being gimmicky or annoying like some other RUclipsrs, but mostly informative and all about the explaining the finer details of the content.

Oh heck yeah I want another video! I love your videos about speed running, I enjoy learning about speed running more than actually watching people speed run.
