People who are strangers to starting these beasts maybe unfamiliar with the slow turn over kicks done prior to starting. The answer is really quite simple, the rider is mentally checking over they have in order their family affairs, their will is up to date, the local emergency centre is ready on speed dial, and that they’ve remembered to wear their reinforced underpants!
@@derrickanderson2783 yes sir, best comment ever. I remember riding my cousins kx 500 with a bald tire and still finding it hard to keep the front tire down. I love it. Power to spare. He bought the 91 kx500 in 1993 and still has it and completely rebuilt it about 5 years ago 😍
@@TurtleMan-oq5sj I was just going to post that ! lol... My 84 YZ490 took a good 10-20 minutes of this before it would finally explode to life. Really long kick lever on it too. It was a fricking brutal bike and I miss it .
I love the sound of these big two strokes. My dad used to have several yz490s and an IT490 and they were always bears to start. The IT was the easiest starting one and was the only one I ever got to ride
You had me rolling. That wreckless kicking without finding top dead center first will definitely yield the throw you in the neighbor's yard or jam your hip in your throat back kick
Never. Never sell it. You'll never be able to replace it if and WHEN you end up regretting it. Been down the sellers remorse road too many times now with banshees, tecate 4's,etc. It's the worst. I have 2 kx500's now,one was $800 and one was $1200 back when you could get em. The $800 kid DEFINITELY didn't know what he had. I wouldn't even try to haggle w/him and he was SHOCKED i paid him full asking price for it lol!!😂 I'll keep these two bikes for a lifetime, why not! They're both bone stock and very nice,1990 and 1993. Once these old five hundo's fall into guys like Ken Kaplan's hands they turn into $10,000 bikes! Couldn't ever imagine paying that i mean i love that guy ta death but gaddamn!!😱😱
Raced one of these 87CR-500 in open expert class back in 87, 88, 89 and 1990 Still mad at myself for ever selling it and ESPECIALLY knowing what they're worth nowadays 😫
I remember those days. My cousin had a 1987 CR250R that we used to always ride when I’d visit family in Florida. Thinking of that sound & the smell of Klotz oil is nostalgic. I had a 1989 & 1991 RM125 in middle & highschool as well as a 96. CR250R. I miss those Saturdays as a kid being so excited to ride rain or shine. Since then I’ve had a 790R & variety of 250/350/450’s but the feeling isn’t the same. I’ve been thinking a lot about getting another 2stroke for a variety of reasons. 🤔
Had a 97 for 22 years, easy to cold start. turon on petcock, tip bike over until you see fuel run out, give a couple of soft kicks to make sure she's primed, find top dead center, pull the choke and one good kick with the slightest of a crack to the throttle after immediately after the kick. First time every time. Used to laugh at my buddies when hp 4 strokes first came out and they would spend 15 minutes cold and hot starting them, while my beloved 500 never failed me. I died a little that day I saw her leave in another man's truck.
All they wanted to do was kill you. I'm still scared of how quick these bike were. That powerband was too quick. Pulling a wheelie at 50mph is fun until you hit a gopher hole.
That's a sweet bike...heres a tip for kicking it so itll start right up....go through the strokes slowly like you did couple times but when you feel the "click/notch" (TDC) than bring kicker all the up and you will get a full stroke...otherwise youll end up breaking your leg or case...im getting ready to post a cold start on my cr500 soon
Amen to that I had a 2000 CR500R had many close calls. Had to eventually sell it as I lived in town and cops did not appreciate me riding on the street
As a boy I watched my uncle kick over a cold 87 YZ490 while wearing flip flops. He got the bike started pretty quickly despite it hadn’t been started in years. These types of men just simply don’t exist anymore. I too wouldnt dare try to start my cr500af in anything other than motocross boots and it’s always a chore.
I remember when this was featured in cycle world back in the days, me and my best friend stared at the picture for days...salivating !! one of the most beautiful bikes ever !!!
Nice bike! Meanest sounding machine from the factory ever. Take the time to find top dead center on every kick. It will never start any other way. I have an 86CR500.
My 06 is stubborn, too, at times... This ratcheting manual kick-start was a german invention - (sachs)... very much out dated - but the execs told us electric start would add too many l b's, meanwhile they engineered a frame so heavy as to support a US Naval minesweeper... bring back our 80's designs, please
Richard I have the same exact bike mine just has the Pro Circuit pipe. i would never try to start mine on a bike stand since these bikes were very high to begin with. make sure you drain the carb if not going to use for a while especially if you live in cold weather.
i got to laugh, i'm 60 and still ride a KTM 525exc. while watching this my missus walked past and muttered " i'd rather you play with yourself than ride those bloody things"

I let someone ride my 87 CR 250 . He putted around till he stalled it . He loaded it up with gas I think . I got on ( I had motocross boots on ) I kicked it , it kicked back & ripped a hole through the sole of my boot and the bottom of my foot . That was 30+ years ago and the scar is still there .
You doing it wrong. How do you know there is enough fuel in carburetor? Steps you should take; 1.Turn fuel on 2.Take bike off stand, and put it flat on ground (or at least 30 degrees) until you see fuel going out from carburetor pipes 3.Than kick it
I mean im no expert here but wouldnt it be easier to go 1 click past TDC bring it all the way up to the top and then kick it? My big bore 4 stroke and 2 stroke start easily when doing this
Backfires and Poofs just like my Lil Baby Eagle 97 80cc when kicking it over 😂. Not to sure why it does that and why it's always a pain starting it. But when shes awake, she rips.

Pure truth. LOL! That's why its always a great idea to be wearing riding boots just to start a 500, they will hurt you in sneakers.

When I had my CR500 I would lay the bike down on it's side to let the gas flow out of the carburetor. Choke kick vroom broom broom.
D'accord ... 46 coups de kick avant de démarrer ... et ça ne démarre toujours pas . David Thorpe doit bien rigoler .
Do it right, and it will start much easier. And kick like you Mean it.

Its funny how the smoke pattern and sound of exhaust doesnt exactly match the cadence of the engine rpm.
