I met Marika by chance earlier tonight at a casual drinks type deal. We were the only younger ones there so naturally we gravitated toward each other and talked a bit.. It's pretty sweet to know now that the music she told me about is this damn good. She was pretty alluring and mysterious like her music, but really humble at the same time. Even though I bombarded her with questions to satiate my curiosity about this music she made, she didn't brag a single bit about having this level success and about how much of a nice sound she'd found with her music. She will go far :)
If you are british as you say, check George holman- Peacock affect. I dig for british folk-indie singers and composers from this area. I have to say indie music is my type of music but I think I was also influenced to search BRITISH indie-folk music thanks to some commercials from fifa games commercials, EG Bloc Party band. Muse was already big from start, so no need but still... Some songs I heard way before they even appeared in games. Oh I also forgot about Dan Croll and many more I can't remember.
Nihil Islands If you're still looking for new music (who isn't?) check out this band called LEG., their name includes the full stop. Their EP called Narwhal should be easy to find on bandcamp.com, if you don't like it at least check out the song Shadows, it's incredible.
It's quite astonishing to see how well this whole desert-concept works with Ophelias story. I would have expected a lake, flowers, lots of water.. You do the exact opposite and it works brilliantly :D

Tears in my glass, some raw emotion for a change, a flashback of the fabric of my being before it was torn, nothing fake or ringing empty here, so thanks. Thanks a great deal. Because phonies are the worst. So people who are true to life, must be on top of the world right now. Even if they hardly feel that they are, or have hope that they ever could be. That's just the way truth is, the more living simply and in tune with the natural spirit of life the merrier though perhaps?! And not so much of a desert either.
This is a masterpiece in every possible way; the songwriting, the voice, the instrument choices, the production. The lyrics, they might just be my favourite lyrics ever and they're not even my usual taste (they're more literal, than mystical and abstract) If you listen carefully at the very beginning it sounds like just her in a room with a guitar. You can hear the sound of the room and the slight lo-fi quality, gradually opening up into a beautiful musical landscape, with no instrument trying to be at the front. From the beginning you feel you are being serenaded, you almost don't notice how epic is becomes. Oh to be serenaded by Marika Hackman. I'm gonna say it, I'm going to bring gender in here. If she were a man, she would be up there with Radiohead, the pixies, more, obscure huge huge acts, but she doesn't fit into the industries ideal of a female artist (which is fucking bullshit). I think she's perfect. Her Any human friend album was so good and so different, I genuinely thought it was an 80s covers album. Not to discredit her, quite the opposite, it was such a big jump and in fairness the first song I heard she was pretending to be a man in some sense. But the writing, the use of melody for hooks, the production values, it was so accomplished, nothing close came out that period. Anyways. To summarize. Marika Hackman not being huge is proof the industry is still stuck in the past and so are the public. I case people might think I have an agenda, I'm a straight, white, middled age man. What are really deserves is the mercury prize. Next album 🤞

yeah she said in a recent interview she didn't rlly know how to identify herself yet, but she's queer and has had relationships with both men and women (also about the ironic lyrics for boyfriend she said “Some guys think it's fine for their girlfriends to get with another girl. But if it's with another guy they go ballistic. The language we use pisses me off. It's the passive stuff that drip feeds into society and winds up being far more damaging.”)
