  • The origin of this video was a short series of clips of Cape Charles and the PRR ferry that I came across. I decided to expand it into a full program. I made my first trip to the Tidewater region in 1978 to visit Virginia Beach. As my interest in rail/marine facilities and operations grew, I kept returning. This slideshow is a result of my efforts with a few historic photos added to complete the picture.
    For video of carfloat operations, see my two vids on the Eastern Shore RR in 1990 and 1996.

    Spent 7 years ae Little Creel 94-01. Barges still ferried rail cars. The old gravity coaling dock was still there. The outbound ship is USS Orion AS-18. She was home ported in Guam in the 1990's.

    Interesting operation! I hadn't heard of any Norfolk & Western car float operations prior to this. Stellar music and editing too by the way.

      N&W did not have a carfloat. The Chessie and PRR had them. N&W had a tugboat used for ship docking and barges.

    Thanks for posting a historical account of this line. I've been driving past it for the past six or so years while heading to the beach, and always found the railroad line paralleling the road to be fascinating, especially after reading about the carfloat operations. Finally in July 2018, incidentally shortly before abandonment was brought up, I stopped in Cape Charles, exploring and taking pictures. I hope that somebody is able to preserve the railroad down to Cape Charles. I heard that the concrete plant shutting down was a big hurt to the line.

      @@dgeist4609 My pictures aren't anything great. I just took some pictures of the railroad equipment still remaining in Cape Charles, as well as the trackage around the dock area. I'm sad that I never saw the carfloat in action.

      It may be there. The location was not on the slide, I merely used it to illustrate a PRR tug, one of the ones that wound up at Cape Charles.

    So is there away you can do a video on the layout of Cape Charles like the track plans of how the many yards they had because i'll be using that video as research for a route i'll be planning to build in Trainz. Thank you for this video as it shows there was big steam in Cape Charles since there was a roundhouse there plus the two large yards.

      Here's a link to the DELMAR to CAPE CHARLES PRR track chart that has a good diagram of the yard plus lots of other info in building the route:

      @@fmnut thanks but i know all too well about that site. if you go to www.historicaerials.com/viewer put in Cape Charles and go to the year 1952 and then 1956 in topo you'll see the yards im talking about. i'll be using TransDEM and google earth for this route. im just wondering if you had pics or maybe video for those yards. Find anything information on the yards in cape Charles is hard to find and if they are in detail too. I do have the track side of the Delmarva lines book too.

      @@Icerthebluelion what I have of Cape Charles on video is in my two Eastern Shore RR vids. Just do a search on YT for them. Unfortunately a lot of tracks were ripped up by the time I got there with a video camera.

    • @Icerthebluelion
      @Icerthebluelion 5 лет назад

      @@fmnut i understand by the time you got there most of the tracks were ripped up but i guess what i can do is go by Aerials of the area and use that to map out the yards and where everything went. of course i'll use your videos to help me out as well when it comes to doing the modern version of the route too. 1970s to present day.

    I understand pulling out most of the tracks in the valuable Cape Charles land, but they should leave the float bridge and at least a couple through tracks alone.
