Corporal is the equivalent of Lance Jack in the Canadian military, but the difference is that one is entitled to promotion after 4 years of service, almost always after a qualifying course. We therefore end up with many more junior NCOs than other Commonwealth militaries, including down to having multiple at the section level. Our sections (in the combat arms) are usually commanded by Senior NCOs, but typically in the regular army it's around the same time to gain that rank - 10 - 12 years to Sgt on average. Hope this clears it up a bit. We do things somewhat differently, but still in a relatively familiar manner. Just imagine that Lance Jacks don't necessarily act as Sect 2IC, which can be a full screw Corporal, and that Sections are usually commanded by Sgts but sometimes full screws.
Also, full screws are called Master Corporals in the Canadian Army. They can be identified by two chevrons or stripes with a maple leaf above. We don't have Staff Sgts anymore, and Platoon 2ICs are Warrant Officers. There are three classes of WOs in Canada - Warrant Officer (Crown - Platoon 2ICs and Company Quartermaster Sergeants), Master Warrant Officer (Crown & Wreath - Company Sergeant Majors, Quartermaster Sergeant Instructors) and Chief Warrant Officers (Coat of Arms, Regimental Sergeant Majors). All of these ranks came after the unification of our services in 1968. We've clawed back a lot of older traditions since then, but our system of Other Ranks seems likely to remain as it is. While I personally would like to go back to the older system to get in full line with the rest of the Commonwealth, it's probably not going to happen.
