no, it won't rip an ankle or leg off because of the shape of the board. There just wouldn't be enough drag, as soon as the tension on the leash happens the board cuts into the water like a knife.
And there are guys on jetskis waiting to go and help anyone who wipes out badly. Those guys are brave as hell too. But basically you just have to hold on and hold your breath until you come up, and hope your mate is there to grab you when you do.
