    Thomas Cranmer is a fascinating character on the Tudor stage. It was very brave of him to stay in England after the death of Edward, as he had to have known that Mary as Queen would not have looked at him kindly.

    • @h.calvert3165
      @h.calvert3165 5 лет назад +10

      I've always felt it was a foolish decision, rather than brave. He had to have known that Mary would especially hate him for his part in her mother's downfall & dismissal. He also had to at least have heard rumours that her health was variable. He could easily have presumed that her reign might not be a lengthy one. If he had fled to the Continent & then returned under Elizabeth, I'm sure she would have prospered her godfather. History is so full of "What might have been", isn't it? 🤔

    • @marionarnott750
      @marionarnott750 5 лет назад +5

      @@h.calvert3165 it:s a pity he didn't escape. Perhaps he was afraid that his Church would lack a leader if he left. Perhaps he underestimated the strength of Mary's ill will towards him
      Or maybe he believed that a highly placed servant of Henry who had managed to survive him, who had managed to elicit affection from him over some years, was untouchable. To outlive Henry was quite a feat. Could he have understood that Mary was gunning for him?

      I just found this piece written by Cranmer. I wonder if the King's Great Matter suggested the wording:
      What the heart loves, the will chooses and the mind justifies.
      -- Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop
      Perhaps it's the secret of his good relationship with Henry: Cranmer understood him, was even compassionate towards him in the struggle to divorce and marry Anne.

    What an interesting and complicated man. Close enough to Anne to hear her final confession but oddly grieved enough at Henry's passing to grow a beard for the man who had killed two of his wives. He had started as a Boleyn man but then it was not him, it was Matthew Parker to whom Anne entrusted the welfare of her daughter. Thanks for this wonderful video, lots to think about.

    What an engaging character Thomas Cranmer is. He watched many Catholic Martyrs die for their faith. As a man so integral to the Church of England, I wonder if he felt honour bound not to flee, but to accept his place in history as a Protestant Martyr, and prove the Reformers would also face death rather than betray their beliefs?

    • @colinlavelle7806
      @colinlavelle7806 5 лет назад +2

      You may be correct there...he must have had some opportunity to flee the country. He did initially recant but then changed his mind at the last minite. Queen Mary certainly must have seen him as being responsible for the breakup of her parent's marriage resulting in her being seperated from her beloved mother. Also Cranmer was implicated in the plot to have Lady Jane Grey installed as Queen against the Will of Henry VIII which had Mary to succeed Edward.

    Cranmer really got put between a rock and a hard place by Henry, the Boleyn's, Cromwell and Queen Mary. He really walked a tightrope. I, personally like his beard. He seemed to be devoted to Henry and his son. Not an easy life. I learned quite a bit today, and appreciate your work.

  • @monicacall7532

    What happened to Cranmer’s family after his execution? Did the English Protestants who had fled to Europe during Mary I’s reign try to help them out? Did Elizabeth I, as his goddaughter, have anything to do with the Cranmer family after she came to the throne? I ask because considering Cranmer’s great importance in being the Archbishop of Canterbury, helping to establish the Church of England, writing the Book of Common Prayer and making that church more Protestant than Henry VIII originally intended it to be, it would be odd, at least to me, if the people who knew, worked for and deeply cared for him to suddenly drop his family as if they were of no account any longer.

      After Cranmer's death, his wife (who had fled to the Continent during Mary's reign) remarried twice. His only son had been taken to Europe by his paternal uncle. Neither the boy nor his only sibling (a sister) had children, & Cranmer's line is now extinct. 🙏

    Thank you so much for the info on Thomas Cranmer. My first lessons in Tudor history were watching the BBC series 'Elizabeth R' and 'The Six Wives of Henry VIII.' So I knew Cranmer was married (didn't know he'd married twice) and that he was Elizabeth's godfather. My mind always goes back to those dramas when we're talking about Cranmer. In the shows, he seems rather long-suffering when it comes to dealing with HR VIII's wives, especially by the time Katherine Howard and Katherine Parr come along. He is also noble to me.

Crammer had a sister Alice who became a Cistercian Nun and eventually became sacristan at her Priory and then was promoted to Prioress by her brother. After the dissolution of the religious houses she remained in the 'old religion' and remained in contact with her brother.

    Claire, is it true that Cranmer recanted on the understanding that Mary would pardon him? He then recanted his recantation when he discovered that he was to die anyway
    I. have always liked Cranmer showing human fear and then finding his courage and boldly thrusting his hand into the fire first because it had offended first by signing his recantation.
    Somehow he seems more human and likeable than the wild eyed martyrs who never faltered.
