Photographer here: You should raise your F stop at least to steps to get a sharper image and reduce your shutter speed to compensate. Also the polarizing filter on the lens is all you need. Glare also depends on the angle of the subject with respect of the light source. Just adjust the angle of the painting or cover the light a little like you did.
Noted! Will do next time. As for the glare it doesn’t work for me if i only use the filter on the lens. At least not as well. Gets rid of like 80% of the glare
As a photographer who photographs a lot of paintings for a handful of artists, the polarizing sheets over the lights make a huge difference. Paintings aren't as flat as one might expect; there are all kinds of angles on the surface for light to bounce off of no matter how I angle my lights.
Hey Thomas! It's super cool to see your process for creating the prints that you sell. I want to do the same with my own artwork so I really appreciate the insight! I have a surecolor p800 at home and I use a surecolor900 at the photo department during class: A few tips for printing: Frontloading paper can be super helpful if you know that the printer is iffy when loading and printing especially on a heavy weight paper like that canson Another thing that you can do is setting the platen gap to wide to avoid scuffs and shifts during printing, I normally do this in photoshop so I don't know the interface in lightroom for printing quite as well. Also changing the paper type and size on the printer interface will help the printer know what kind of paper is going in and how thick it is Don't forget to agitate your cartridge every once in a while even if you've been printing that inks don't settle and change color Hopefully some of that was helpful! You've been doing this for awhile so I might be preaching to the choir. I love your work and the videos you make always have a great vibe, I can't wait to see what you come up with next! Keep it up man! :)
Seriously god bless you for sharing all this amazing hard earned info! Just bought a couple prints ive been eyeing. Seeing all the hassle you go through just to print them really puts the value into perspective ❤
Not 100% sure cuz i obviously wasnt there but I believe your issue with your printer is that your paper is still curled from the roll. If you lay it on a flat surface with some weights for a day to flatten it out I dont think you'd have as many issues with your prints. At 7:18 you can see how bad the curl is at exactly the location you had the issue. The print head is coming into contact with the paper and causing the splatter and streaks.
Great video, there is some good advice in there. Just a little tip, dont shoot at 2.8, your lens is usually sharpest at 8 depending on the lens. Just expose the image longer. You want to shoot at f8 iso100 and adjust the shutter speed acordingly
thank you for sharing this! learning how to paint and selling your soul doing reels might not be the obvious things to do and needed to hear that again! of course the rest of the video is very helpful if you already have a camera and cant afford a scanner. If you have more ideas for this type of videos please make them and Ill watch them haha, also gorgeous cat, did you even considered painting Sil?
Hey nice video! Some interesting info. This seems like a very time consuming process especially when you include shipping. I understand that your main reason for not outsourcing prints is for quality control and personal touch but I would much rather spend time painting more than going through this. Have you tried outsourcing? What were the costs like? From my perspective I want as much time to paint as possible and delegate tasks when I can for maximum efficiency. I would love to hear why you choose to do it this way. Cheers
I honestly appreciate the mess up print with the printer adding its own touch! It makes it collaborative and organic but I also understand the frustration! Side question did you get someone to make your website for you? Or is it some website builder thing? Long time fan but first time visiting your site it looks great!
You will lose a ton of sharpness in your image if you shoot at f2.8 (especially away from the centre of the image). The most optimal aperture for most lenses in terms of sharpness lies between F8 to F11.
Genuine question, why use roll paper instead of sheet ? Im sure Canson makes that in a 11 x 17 or whatever you are cutting it into. Seems like your introducing more steps / room for misprints then necessary
Hey man, love the videos. Do you mind me asking roughly how much each print costs you to make? The equipment looks expensive, the time it takes looks like a lot of effort and it looks like you may absorb some costs given things going wrong every now and then. But that all said, I’m interested about getting into this and if I could get to a stage anywhere near yours I’d have a lot of fun and find it very fulfilling
Hey man, in your video where you prime with oil paint you say that it sucks, because of drying time and smell. I had the same problem untill i watched colley whissons video where he uses hardware store acrylic paint that dries to a similair finish to oil paint. Its worked for me, but im not super sure about the archivelness of it all
This video is going to go up by about a thousand views the second I make something that I think is good enough to make prints of. Which could be never. Maybe
I was already warming up my fingers to unleash an "ok but how do you actually find people who'll buy your stuff", but I see you got that covered in step 3 :') That's been my biggest hurdle, people always tell me they love my work, but I've yet to find an audience who consistently wants to buy it - or who can afford it. I do get sales here and there (actually just had my first $1k month) but it lacks consistency. Working to get to your level some day soon 💪 Nice to see your approach to this btw, thanks for sharing!
@@ThomMinnickArt Bro - after seeing the price of the printer, ink, paper, and labor only to see it fail... convinced me to not offer my own prints - so that's priceless. The oil painting photography game you gave here is hard to find and so on point - your channel one of the best on the tubes IMHO
The voice over corrections made me giggle😂 Great vid!
It was supposed to be purposefully bad and funny
Love the no BS vibe and dig at better help haha. Glare has been my fking nemesis lol, thanks alot!
Ofc!
ah, you're my favorite sarcastic little art man. Thanks for the info! :)
I dont know how to take that, might get some better help
Little art man is crazy
I really appreciate you sharing this. I am a huge fan of your work.
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it!
Each video is equally or more useful than the last. Good shit man keep it up
I just gotta get a microphone 🥲
Hey maybe you could sell the failed prints for a little less, seems like win win situation for you and people that might not afford it other ways

This is what RUclips needs!! Getting back to good old videos! Amazing man, keep up the good work!! Congrats on your business by the way
Thank you!
I am inspired by your professionalism. Great progresses in most of the terms👍🏼✌🏼❤️
It's reassuring to hear that it takes about a decade to learn, I'm almost a year in and the slow progress is painful
Just keep going! Its worth it!

A few people have told me this ill make sure to do it next time! Thanks for the advice!
You could add an extender to the paper cutter and then set a stop so you just have to push the roll up to the stop and not have to measure every time
Great idea maybe ill do this
Hahahahahah that is an amazing video! Love to see what’s the true behind all of that!😂

I agree and disagree it can be cool sometimes but its also not what people are paying for so its gotta be perfect.
My brother made my website!
@ThomMinnickArt true true! Also he did a great job! Does he do other people's? Is there some way to get in contact with him at a later date?
Really thanks Thomas, big fan from Italy

Cheaper paper. And they don’t make 13x24. They mostly make standard photography ratios.

Thank you! Ill probably do another video just on photographing your work. Probably make a darker painting to show the difference more.
@@ThomMinnickArt Yes it's def worth it's own video - and maybe a painting that was recently painted or oiled out - so it's extra reflective.
